limit despite some vocal opposition to the plan. now the rules committee voted to advance the compromise agreed to by president biden and speaker kevin mccarthy. mccarthy is trying to get enough republicans to approve before the government could run out of money next week to pay its bills. jarred hill is in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. you know, this is definitely turning out to be a major test of kevin mccarthy's grip on the gop. there are some cracks showing in the republican support of this deal he brokered to raise the debt ceiling. leaders think they have the votes in conjunction with democrats to and avoid default. in just hours, the debt ceiling deal brokered by republican house speaker kevin mccarthy and president biden will finally get a vote on the house floor. >> the more that people read in this bill, the more they find in terms of real conservative victories -- >> reporter: last night a group of gop house lawmakers made a last sales pitch for the bill

after it barely made it out of the rules committee. >> seven ayes, six nays. >> reporter: the agreement suspend the borrowing limit through early 2025 in exchange for cuts to irs funding and energy permitting reform. a growing number of house republicans have threatened to vote no, arguing the bill doesn't go far enough to rein in federal spending. >> not one republican should vote for this deal. it is a bad deal. >> confident that we will avoid a catastroiclt. >> reporter: top house democrat hakeem jeffries says he's facing concerns from his office and says he's holding speaker mccarthy to his promise to deliver 150 republican votes. >> we strongly urge both chambers to pass the bill and send to the president's desk. >> reporter: treasury secretary janet yellen says the u.s. will run out of money by june 5th if a debt limit is not raised or suspended. now at least 20 republicans say

donald trump, is scheduled to be in iowa tomorrow. crews may resume searching for victims after a building collapse in iowa. right now it's unclear when authorities will allow rescue teams back on the site in davenport due to safety concerns. officials say five people are missing, including two who could be buried under the rubble. one survivor was rescued in a fourth floor apartment monday night hours after authorities said everyone in the building had been accounted for. the city said demolition was expected to begin yesterday, but later clarified it was a multistep process. >> so understand it's not that we don't want to do this, it's the fact that we have to do it in a safe manner. >> there had been repeated complaints about the century-old building. cbs news has learned an engineering company deemed the building safe in january. police are searching for three more suspects linked to a mass shooting at a florida beach. it happened monday afternoon.

police say the gunfire erupted after a fight between two groups of people broke out. two men were arrested and charged in the shooting rampage. authorities were back at the beach in hollywood yesterday looking for more evidence and talking to possible witnesses. >> the police have recovered five weapons in total. pretty crazy, right, in broad daylight, in the middle of a holiday weekend with thousands of people on one of the busiest public beaches in the country, for people to come in and suddenly start shooting at each other in broad daylight, who does that? >> police say nine people were shot, four of the victims were minors. the youngest is just 1-year-old. former first lady rosalynn cart haseen diagnowi dentia. her family said the 95-year-old remains at home in plains, georgia, with former president jimmy carter. he's been receiving hospice care at home since february. the couple has been married nearly 77 years. the carter center said mrs. carter has spent her long public life advocating for families

affected by mental illness. overseas, north korea says an attempt to put the country's first spy satellite into orbit failed. state media says the rocket carrying the satellite crashed into waters off the korean peninsula's western coast overnight. the launch prompted brief evacuation warnings in parts of south korea and japan. south korea says it has recovered parts of the launched vehicle from the water. the u.s. condemned north korea which used ballistic missile technology in violation of u.n. security council resolutions. one woman was killed and at least 11 others injured after russia unleashed its third air attack in 24 hours on the capital of ukraine. the latest action comes after a civilian area of moscow was targeted by a drone attack. debora patta has the latest. >> reporter: vladimir putin's invasion of ukraine is being felt deep in the heart of russia.for those inco a nex

the unsettling sight of what appeared to be drones over the capital's wealthiest neighborhoods. for others, it's a wake-up call. "i'm thinking of moving somewhere safer," olga said. "it's logical this could happen. what else did they expect?" there were no casualties, but russian media claims some of the drones slammed into highrise apartment blocks. kyiv has denied any involvement, but an adviser to president zelenskyy said they were watching with pleasure and predicted more of the same. the apparent strike in moscow followed yet another aerial assault on ukraine with predawn explosions once again in kyiv when a swarm of iranian-made drones were taken out by ukraine's air defense network. that makes 17 attacks this month alone, but virtually all the russian munitions have been taken down. zelenskyy hailed the success of the u.s.-made patriot air

coast of panama city, florida. the spacecraft departed the international space station early yesterday morning. the crew consisting of one former nasa astronaut and three paying customers spent 12 hours in orbit as the capsule maneuvered back to earth. this concludes a historic ten-day mission that included eight days docked at the orbiting lab. councilwomanand there'new clue in the sa those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "new york post" reports a missing tennessee mom may have been spotted at a california walmart. 33-year-old nikki alcaraz disappeared three weeks ago while on a cross-country trip with her boyfriend. five days earlier, they were involved in an alleged domestic assault in new mexico that law enforcement responded to. authorities say she was likely seen at a walmart last saturday. the case is being compared to gabbi petito who was murdered by her boyfriend on a cross-country trip in 2021.

"the new york times" says a virginia man was charged in the shooting of a new jersey councilwoman. 28-year-old rashid ali bynum was taken into custody yesterday and charged with first-degree murder in the death of 30-year-old eunice dwumfour. she was killed while sitting in her suv outside her home in new jersey in february. prosecutors say the suspect was linked to a church she belonged to. an attorney for the victim's family says they are looking for answers. he target eunice, what was the >>he suspect ated in targeting virginia, and there's no word on when he might be extradited to new jersey. and the "associated press" says a south carolina gas station orn accused of killing a 14-year-old boy made his first court appearance. authorities say 58-year-old rick
