empty in the famous san francisco skyscrapers. the bold change that one man says is the key to filling them up. >> from kpix, this late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i am juliette goodric in for sarah tonight. for decades, high-tech and high finance had been san francisco' bread and buer. now is ely dese e city okr wa to fillitback up. san francisco has 23 millio square feet of empty office space right now. let's put that into perspective. that is salesforce towers worth of space. ironically, many of thes vacancies are salesforce properties, including six floor of the tower and large chunks o office space at 50 fremont and 53 mission. it is expected to keep climbing as leases expire.

so how to reverse the trend? ma darrow met a man leading a grassroots effort to essentiall repaint the urban landscape as we know it. >> reporter: take a walk throug downtown san francisco, and you will see a lot of these signs and vacant spaces. >> what we need is more mixed-use downtown. >> reporter: robbie silver, the executive director of the downtown san francisco partnership stopped here on california street. >> it is a beautiful place at the front of california street. can we get some artists here an maybe a new restaurant in brthe to liit is a tall task right now. >> reporter: seeing multiple blocks with multiple vacancies, it is not a good look. >> he says there are currently 150,000 square feet of ground floor vacancies downtown, and according to figures from cb re:, 25 million square feet of

total vacant office space in th city. >> pre-pandemic it was about 4% and now we are at 30%. the biggest reason for that is hybrid work and most recently layoffs. >> reporter: cbre says that although leasing activity is starting to increase, there is not much demand right now, but he says that is going to change >> that should hopefully start to happen towards the end of this year or early next year as the economy starts to improve and interest rates start coming down and growth can turn around >> we need more establishments like this to help us reimagine downtown sf. >> reporter: silver hopes to se more of a diversified downtown with less of a reliance on tech and finance. >> if we give people positive reasons to coto come.

breathing. they say they are having trouble keeping up with the number of overdoses. andrea nakano on why the fight to save lives becomes harder each day. >> reporter: petaluma valley hospital recently had three patients come in in one week, all in their 20s. they overdose and all edaway. hospitals say that xylazine-laced fentanyl, known as tranq, is causing a major crisis. >> we want to save lives. we don't want to say goodbye to people. >> reporter: wendy thomas has worked at petaluma valley hospital for 25 years. the presence of tranq has are concerned. >> for healthcare providers, th emotional toll that it is takin on us is tough. >> reporter: recently a young woman in her 20s was brought into the hospital hours after she overdose. by the time she arrived, there was nothing doctors could do to save her life. >> one of the patients was recently and organ donor and it

broke all of our hearts. people came in on their day off to lin the hallways. she was taken to the operating room to harvest her organs. >> reporter: while narcan has been effective in reversing pur fentanyl overdoses, the combination of tranq has made i extremely difficult to save lives. more narcan has to be used in hopes of keeping a patient alive while the horse tranquilizer wears off. >> there are times when we use have all the narcan we have in the hospital. we had to call more hospitals to get more narcan and we had to order more narcan to have on hand here in i.v. form to be able to give patients, because we have run out a couple times. >> reporter: the hope is that b getting the information out to the community, people will be more aware of what they put in their bodies. >> if you don't know where it has come from or what is in it,

tonight, that '70s show actor danny masterson has been convicted on two counts of rape. prosecutors said that he assaulted two women at his home and used his status in the church to silence them. >> i think when a jury hears evidence that is the practice o religion to intimidate, to hide to do tactics that put victims in a place where they feel uncomfortable coming forward, that can be damaging to the defense. >> the church denied the allegations and said the encounters were consensual. thi was masterson's first trial. he will be sentenced in august.

to trap ground-level pollutants not as much of the low cloud cover and fog, but that doesn't mean it will be absent. there will be some of it spreading into in the valleys by early tomorrow morning. it backs up out of the valleys as we head towards mid-to-late morning. plenty of sunshine for the rest of the day, and temperatures will warm up from upper 50s and low 60s tomorrow morning, then to almost normal high temperatures for the afternoon, a degree or two below average. you will not be able to tell much of a difference. near 60 along the coast, appropriately cool. near 70 down the peninsul and around the south end of the bay and into the mid-70s for th santa clara valley, mid-to-uppe 70s for the in the valleys of the east bay, then at mount diablo temperatures reach into the low 80s. mid-60s in san francisco, near 70 for oakland and the east bay, low to mid 70 for much of the north bay and a couple of warmer spots with upper 70s for napa, upper 70s

for santa rosa and other spots also touching 80 degrees tomorrow afternoon. we settle back into a near average or slightly below average temperature pattern after the weekend, and it looks like nea average is what we can generall expect. the climate prediction center updated their june outlook and it keeps us between the best chance of above normal temperatures to the north and the best chance of below averag temperatures further to the south and southeast. we will spend above normal and below normal for a few days, and things will generally even out over the next few days. temperatures will peak saturday and sunday. upper 60s in san francisco, low 70s in oakland, only a degree or two above normal for the day. low 80s saturday and sunday, same thing for san jose and the santa clar valley. we settle back into the slightly below average temperature pattern by tuesday and wednesday. more clouds next tuesday as well and some of the forecast models into at a chanc for pop up showers and thunderstorms. no raindrops in the forecast at this point. straight ahead in sports,
