borrowing limit came after hours of floor debate. it now heads to the senate. president biden who brokered the deal with speaker kevin mccarthy called it good news for the american people and the american economy. jarred hill is in new york with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, we veered further away from the default iceberg, but it still is a very real threat as this bill now heads over to the senate. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: with a big bipartisan vote, the house passed the bill to suspend the nation's debt limit through january, 2025. >> tonight we all made history because this is the biggest cut and savings this congress has ever voted for. >> reporter: the bill which was the result of a deal between the white house and house republicans also caps some federal spending, claws back money from the irs, tightens eligibility for food stamps programs, and loosens some environmental rules. >> we had an obligation, a

responsibility to avoid a catastrophic default. >> reporter: in the end, more democrats supported the bill than republicans, angering some conservatives to opposed it. >> now democrats have joined with mccarthy to pass bills. so there is a big reassessment of the coalition for power in the house. >> reporter: a white house official tells cbs news the president watched the house vote with staff while in colorado springs. in a statement, he thanked house leaders and urged the senate to also pass it. >> i hope we can move the bill quickly here in the senate and bring it to the president's desk as soon as possible. >> reporter: senate majority leader chuck schumer has warned members of his chamber to prepare for potential votes over the weekend. the u.s. treasury says the bill must get to the president's desk by monday, june 5th, to avoid default. now some senators are insisting on amendments. one gop lawmaker is calling on a party to block this bill altogether. any changes at this stage seem unlikely with so little time before that monday deadline.

>> yeah, you called it an iceberg, a good analogy. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. so five people are still unaccounted for after sunday's partial collapse of a six-story apartment building in davenport, iowa. engineers launched a drone to survey the damage. at least nine have been rescued. protesters are demanding that demolition work be delayed until everyone is accounted for. the city released records indicating previous structural problems. the residents say their complaints about the building have been ignored for years. the owner has been fined for failing to keep the structure safe. home buyers across the country have been feeling the squeeze when it comes to rising mortgage rates. mark strassmann and carter evans report on the tale of two coasts. >> reporter: cole and chrissy robinson are finally unpacking after a daunting search for a house in silicon valley. what was it like shopping for a home in this market? >> there were 15 other offers on this house.

>> reporter: so you really went to battle. >> we did. >> reporter: home prices here have seen some of the steepest declines in the nation, and it's drawing in buyers despite higher mortgage rates, according to real estate agents. >> there's more buyers than available homes. >> reporter: why are there are so many houses on the market? >> people who locked in interest rates, are they going to want to sell and buy for close to 7%? they're going to hang on. >> reporter: this four bed, 2.5 bath in san jose is listed for $1.5 million, still an eye-popping number for most of the country. is that a deal? >> yeah. i would say this is priced competitively. >> reporter: california home prices jumped during the pandemic, but now with tech layoffs and remote work they've declined as some choose to move east to more affordable states, driving up home prices there. my colleague, mark strassmann is in florida. >> reporter: here in orlando, a seller's market. home prices keep rising because inventory, available houses for sale, keeps falling. >> we'll go through the kitchen -- >> reporter: avel ramirez, a

will launch his presidential campaign next wednesday in iowa. we are learning more about nasa's investigation into ufos. the space agency's independent panel of experts held its first public hearing yesterday. they vowed transparency and stressed the need for more high-quality data. a nasa official said that there is no convincing evidence that unidentified objects are asciatl a nal rert is e inul>> actor danny mastn, "that '70s show," guilty of raping two women. he faces up to life in prison for raping the women in his home between 2001 and 2003. the jury failed to reach a verdict on a third count. prosecutors said he drugged the women and then used his status in the church of scientology to avoid consequences for decades. the women were scientology members. the prosecutors retried the case after a jury deadlocked on the charges in december. coming up, inspiring

a missing missouri doctor was found by a kayaker in arkansas. authorities say 49-year-old dr. john forsyth was found dead in a lake tuesday from an apparent gunshot wound. he was last seen at the hospital that he worked at on may 21st. his brother said the doctor's unlocked vehicle was found sunday in missouri with his wallet and other personal belongings inside. officials did not say whether he was shot by someone else or if he took his own life. the "albany times union" reports a former limousine manager received the maximum sentence for his role in a new york state crash that killed 20 people. the suv limo was packed with friends out for a birthday celebration in 2018 when its brakes failed. the driver, all 17 passengers, and two bystanders were killed. nauman hussain received a minimum of five years in prison yesterday after being convicted of manslaughter earlier this month. he heard from the victims'

"the star-tribune" says tim walz signed a bill legalizing recreational marijuana for people 21 and over during a ceremony tuesday. it allows people to also grow cannabis plants at home. it becomes law in august. minnesota is the 23rd state to legalize recreational marijuana. the state legalized medical cannabis nearly a decade ago. still to come, beyonce fans going the distance. the extreme lengths some bee hive members will go to catch the star on her "renaissance" tour. e" tour.

-- raising the nation's debt ceiling. the dow fell 134 points. the nasdaq lost 82, and the s&p 500 was down 25 points. shares of advanced auto parts dropped 35% wednesday, marking their worst trading day on record. the company's first-quarter earnings report fell way short of investors' expectations. the auto parts supplier blamed those bleak results on inflation and supply chain problems. hundreds of amazon workers in seattle walked off the job wednesday. they're demanding more flexible remote working options and new climate policies that aim to reduce carbon emissions. a spokesperson for amazon said the company aims to be net carbon zero by 2040. the job action follows recent layoffs at the tech company. and it was five years in the making, but sony's latest "spider-man" offering is finally hitting the big screen. it premieres in the u.s. tonight for what's expected to be a $150 million global opening. this film is a sequel to the

oscar-winning 2018 animated movie "spider-man: into the spider verse." that's your cbs "money watch" report for this thursday morning. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. five minors were arrested for alleged involvement in a brutal attack on three u.s. marines in california. video captured a large group of people beating the servicemen friday night along the san clemente pier in orange county. the marines were not in uniform. police say five juveniles were arrested on suspicion of felony assault. the motive for the attack, though, is not immediately known. and wildfires in canada are growing as smoke from the flames continues to spread to parts of the u.s. the national weather service said air quality alerts were in effect for southern michigan and wisconsin, northern ohio, and parts of pennsylvania, new jersey, and new york. more than 18,000 people in nova scotia, canada, have fled their homes because of the flames. up next, "and just like
