the debt limit a day after it overwhelmingly passed in the house. mr. biden says he'll sign the bill as soon as possible, and he plans to address the nation tonight. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. crisis averted here. the senate with a bit of drama pushed this debt ceiling bill through 63-36. you know, while leaders in congress and even the white house are education this as an overall win, both sides acknowledge that the legislation isn't ideal, just better than default. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: overnight the senate averted what could have been a catastrophic default. >> may be a little tired, but we did it. so we're very, very happy. >> reporter: final passage came after a marathon of votes on 11 amendments, all of which failed. 31 republicans, 4 democrats, and 1 independent joined together in voting against the bill which also slashes some federal spending in exchange for

suspending the debt limit through january, 2025. >> i know in divided government it's tough, but don't tell me that this is the best we could do. >> reporter: meanwhile, those who supported the bill acknowledged their yes was tough but necessary. >> as painful as some of the decisions that will come from this agreement reach, they are virtually at this point inevitable to avoid default on our debt. >> reporter: in a statement, president biden said the passage of the bipartisan deal is a, quote, big win for our economy and the american people. now the bill is headed to the president's desk, and he says he'll sign it as soon as possible. all right. we talked about the top-line provisions of this. this bill also officially ends the freeze on federal student loan payments that started during the pandemic. those will resume in late august. this is different, though, from what the supreme court is set to decide on. that's the president's student loan forgiveness program. a decision on that could come within the next two months. >> a lot of people waiting to find out.

jarred hill in new york, thank you. so there's a bit of a scary incident involving president biden at the air force academy's graduation in colorado. mr. biden tripped and fell while on stage yesterday after greeting graduates. the white house said that the president was fine after he was tripped -- after, rather, he tripped over a sandbag. he was helped up by an air force officer and two members of the secret service. mr. biden later joked that he was sandbagged. the fall is already becoming a talking point for the 2024 presidential race. ed o'keefe is in iowa where republicans ron desantis and former president donald trump are hitting the campaign trail. i hope he wasn't hurt. >> reporter: former president donald trump expressed concern when he was told of his successor's fall and referenced his own fall at west point in 2020. >> you got to be careful about that because you don't want that. even if you have to tiptoe down a ramp. >> reporter: he couldn't resist taking a shot at his once and

possibly future opponent. >> that's a bad place to fall when you're making -- i think it was the air force academy, right? that's not inspiring. >> reporter: trump's comments as he and his top rival florida governor ron desantis campaigned in early voting states, taking swings at each other throughout the day. >> ron, as i call him, desanctimonious for a reason. >> reporter: the former president hammered desantis for touting his ability to serve two terms. >> we will work incredibly hard day after day for two terms over eight-year period to deliver results. >> i've been watching him go out and say "i've got eight years, it's going to be eight years." let me tell you something, right there you should vote against him. it will take me six months to have it totally the way it was. >> reporter: ron desantis responded later during his four-stop tour of new hampshire. >> why didn't he do it the first four years? >> reporter: the florida governor didn't explicitly attack the former president during his formal remarks, instead criticizing president biden for pushing the democratic

yesterday after the gop-led house approved it last week. the plan to cancel up to $20,000 in federal student loans for millions of people is being blocked in courts by legal challenges. the supreme court is expected to issue its ruling on the plan in the coming weeks. we are learning more about some of the issues at an iowa apartment building before part of it collapsed last weekend. three residents remain unaccounted for. days before a section of the six-story building collapsed, a structural engineer warned large patches of an exterior wall appeared ready to fall imminently. city officials say that they did not order residents to evacuate because they relied on the engineering team's assurances the building was safe. overseas now, ukraine says that it shot down more than 30 missiles and drones fired by russia toward the capital of kyiv. three people were killed by falling debris including a 9-year-old girl and her mother who were locked out of air raid shelters. afterwards, the mayor of kyiv

thursday as wall street responded to the house passing a deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling. the dow gained 153 points. the nasdaq was up by 165, and the s&p 500 gained 41 points. lululemon shares surged thursday after the company released stronger than expected q1 earnings. sales rose 24% year over year to $2 billion, pushing shares 12% higher in extended trading. a spokesperson attributes the spike in sales to a meaningful acceleration in china coupled with lower air freight. as he wraps up a three-day trip to china, elon musk has regained his place as the world's richest person. according to "bloomberg," the tesla ceo's total wealth is $192 billion. he surpassed bernard arnault, the ceo of french luxury goods empire lvmh after his company's stock fell 2.6% on wednesday.
