plains. the weekend focast plus, pride backlash. as celebrations begin, conflict threatens some events. later, leaping to the top. when making art for ballet hispanico is about changing lives. does it make you feel strong? >> yes. >> yeah. strong, flight show me you're strong. rrrrr. this is the cbs weekend news from new york with adriana diaz. >> good evening. we begin tonight be with new tensions between the world's largest military super powers, the united states and china. at issue, the latest military moves here in the strait of taiwan between the island and china. new video shows a chinese warship speeding up coming within 150 yards of hitting the american missile destroyer.

the chinese ship even called the american vessel ordering it to move or there would be a collision. the u.s. ship slowed to avoid a crash. news of the incident coming the same day u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin in singapore issued this warning to beijing. >> to be clear, we do not seek conflict or confrontation, but we will not flinch in the face of bullying or coercion. >> eight days ago a chinese fighter jet in the same region flew so close to a u.s. military plane it created turbulence. china sees the u.s. military presence as a violation of its sovereignty. today is a day of mourning in india after its worst train disaster in decades. a passenger train derailed crashing into two other trains and killing more than 288 people. nearly 1,000 were injured. it happened friday night in

india's eastern odicia state. cbs's monitoring it all from london. >> reporter: a sheet thrown to cover a face. a last dignity for a life lost. one of an astonishing hundreds in india's worst train tragedy since at least 1999. this drone view from above makes clear the degree of devastation. an express passenger train derailed. several of its carriages buckled. those then collided with another passenger train, then a parked freight train. in the moments after the accident friday evening lucky survivors climbed out. the less fortunate pulled out while the dead were laid out next to the tracks. this woman said her train tilted. she lost her balanced, then grabbed something to hold on to. then people started falling all over each other. this surge of dazed and bleeding victims overwhelming small local hospitals not used to a quick

influx of high trauma patients. as dawn broke, search and rescue teams ramped up their efforts with sniffer dogs and cutting equipment to find and free the living and the dead still trapped in the mangled wreckage. may the dead rest in peace, said india's railway minister, who vowed to find the root of the cause. this disaster is only the latest in a string of indian train tragedies in which more than 1,100 people have died in the past two decades usually blamed on human error or broken signaling equipment. prime minister narendra modi visited the crash site and will likely face fresh criticism of decades of government neglect of india's 40,000 mile train network. the tragic losses that too often follow. cbs news, london. today ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy declared the long awaited spring offensive against russia could begin soon.

got what they needed. we averted an economic crisis, an economic collapse. >> reporter: another win came in the form of friday's jobs report with the u.s. economy adding twice the number of anticipated jobs in may, more than 330,000. >> this president is presiding over a strong economy. >> yeah. >> and this week he has protected it by preventing a catastrophic default. >> reporter: but on the trail in the early voting state of iowa, gop contenders had a different take. >> in florida, we run budget surpluses. >> reporter: and at the around ul roast and ride, former vice president mike pence road a hog. >> it is great to be back at the roast and ride. i rode and i roasted on the ride. >> while other potential rivals roasted the president. >> i'm running for president because joe biden's policy are the wrong direction for america. >> it's time for a new generational leader. we've got a country to save.

items by eric cornell. citing security concerns. >> the second it gets hard if you're going to jump ship, that's a very dangerous thing to tell people. >> reporter: a boycott of bud light has cost them $27 billion in lost sales since april 1st when it teemed up with transgender social media star dylan mulvaney. >> love ya plans to invest about a billion dollars into the state following governor ron desantis's don't say gay legislation. >> disney's posturing has alienated a lot of people. >> reporter: but the controversy isn't stopping celebrations as thousands flock to orlando for the annual gay days event. now west hollywood is spending $7 million to make sure everyone feels welcome this weekend. adriana. >> elise preston, thank you. this week yelp, the reviews app, announced it was closing

leaders are making a headline with calls to return to the office. >> about 30 of you didn't open or crack open laptops for a whole month. >> reporter: one study said 38% of remote workers usually perform worse than those in the office, 22% were unsure. amazon, apple and starbucks are among companies requiring employees to come in three days a week despite some push back. >> the job market was on fire so it gave the employee a lot of leverage. now that the market is slowing down drastically, i believe that leverage has shifted to the employer. >> reporter: commercial real estate investor patrick carol is hoping offices fill up soon. >> i think it's going to take mandates. it's going to take fear of losing their job. >> i think people frame it the wrong way as a function of productivity. it's about the culture you want to work in. >> for these employees it's a place that promotes a happy work and happy social life.

cultural treasure. new york's ballet hispanico. it has been training thousands of young people of color for more than half a century. this season they opened. they have a lot to celebrate. we visited to see why they're on point. welcome. to ballet hispanico. this is a school and safe haven for dancers who are mostly latin x. who like other dancers of color have historically been marginalized in the mostly white world of classical dance. >> as a child i wanted to be in new york city ballet or american ballet theater. i had a teacher tell me, you being black, latina, your body, you're going to end up being too

in san francisco , we are starting with transit in the bay area tonight. in san jose, people came out to protest plans to build tiny homes for the homeless, that is the cottle station, they don't want it to be converted to a quick build housing site. city council voted unanimously to build the units at eight locations. cottle is one of the stations in the plan. the san jose police headquarters is another station. and people are saying, wait a minute. >> it's just not the right location. and we are sure this is not going to make the community better. this is going to degrade our quality of life. >> protesters want fewer emergency housing units overall in san jose, if the city does follow through on the thousand units, cottle will be one of the smaller locations.
