america's job market stays hot even as the economy faces headwinds. not so sweet. why a georgia peach could be hard to find this summer. and later, a "yellowstone" star's new mission, now asking to help the children of the fallen. >> that's my way of serving this country. >> announcer: this is the ""cbs evening news"" from new york with jericka duncan. good evening and thanks for joining us on this sunday. we begin tonight with new tensions between global rivals. today china's defense minister aggressively defended sailing a warship directly in front of an american missile destroyer. speaking at a summit in singapore, he warned the west to stay out of waters and air space near china's borders. the dangerous close encounter happened in the taiwan strait separating taiwan from china. cbs's elizabeth palmer leads us off tonight.

>> reporter: addressing an audience of global security officials, china's defense minister general li shangfu had some blunt advice for the united states. "keep your ships and planes away," he said. he was reacting to criticism of an incident in the taiwan strait on saturday when a chinese warship crossed the course of an american destroyer so close it had to slow down to avoid a collision. last week a chinese fighter plane pulled a similar maneuver in front of an american reconnaissance plane over the south china sea. without trying to justify the actions, general li said to avoid similar incidents the u.s. should steer clear of areas around china. mind your own business, he said. but the u.s. sees routine patrols of the air and sea off mainland china as very much its own business. to underscore its position that this is international space open to everyone.

at a conference banquet on friday, general li shook hands with the american secretary of defense, lloyd austin. but china declined a formal meeting and that, said secretary austin, is dangerous. meanwhile, the u.s. and chinese militaries continue to operate close to one another. speaking to reporters off camera, secretary austin called on chinese leaders to rein in dangerous conduct in case an accident spiralled out of control. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, tokyo. well, president biden spent a weekend in the nation's capital. today the president golfed with his brother at joint base andrews in maryland at the same time top administration officials are in beijing trying to ease tensions between the u.s. and china. cbs's skyler henry is at the white house with more on that. skyler, good evening. >> reporter: hey, jericka. good evning to you. this latest provocation comes as the administration is looking to

defrost a somewhat icy relationship with china. one president biden previously predicted will thaw soon. with tensions already high, the u.s. is calling china's moves, sending a warship to intercept an american destroyer, irresponsible. it's the latest in a string of incidents between the two sides. in february a u.s. fighter jet shot down a chinese surveillance balloon hovering over american air space, sending relations plummeting. some lawmakers are concerned about the growing strain. >> absent communication allows for a lot of risk of miscalculation. >> reporter: senior administration officials have worked for months looking to keep intelligence channels open. last month cia director william burns made an unannounced visit to china, the highest ranking official to go to beijing since that incident. republicans said administration efforts to meet with chinese officials project weakness. >> biden administration officials should stop chasing

after their chinese communist counterparts like lovestruck teenagers. it's embarrassing and it's pathetic. >> we need to stand strong and this administration needs to stand strong. >> reporter: administration officials expect president biden to meet with chinese president xi sometime later this year. they last met last november. >> and skylar, as you know, the faa right now reporting this afternoon a small plane crashed in virginia. what else can you tell us? >> reporter: yeah, we're learning new information about that. the crash is generating headlines because it made an unauthorized flight over washington, d.c., air space, which is restricted. now, many in the area heard a sonic boom, likely caused by f-16s, which were forced to scramble in response. it crashed over 100 miles outside of the city. we now know that the faa and ntsb are investigating. >> i'm sure we'll keep a close eye on that. thank you. today's india's rail minister said it appears a malfunctioning signal is to blame for the country's worst

train disaster in decades. it caused two passenger trains to change tracks and slam into a freight train. the trains were carrying more than 2,200 people. nearly 300 of them were killed and nearly 1,000 were injured. today in ukraine, air raid sirens were heard across the country as russia launches new air strikes and ground assaults. ukrainian officials say one killed a toddler and wounded 22 people outside the city of dnipro. cbs's debora patta is in kharkiv with the details. >> reporter: good evening, jericka. well, it's been a deadly week for children in ukraine. russian missile attacks killed a 9-year-old girl in kyiv on thursday and just this morning a toddler in dnipro. it is a grimly familiar scene. daylight revealing the full extent of the destruction, homes reduced to rubble, residents shocked and traumatized. "the explosion was unexpected

and very strong," said lyubov. "i was thrown all the way into the corridor." overnight a frantic race for survivors and the news no parent should ever have to hear. a 2-year-old girl had been killed as she slept with her mother, who was badly injured. across the border in russia, a new front line. anti-kremlin militia fighting alongside ukraine have stepped up attacks in the belgorod region. the daily hardships in ukraine being felt by russians, who have taken temporary refuge in a shelter. "we're trying to be strong," said irina bulakova, "because we have children who give us the incentive to carry on." in a self-recorded message on social media, belgorod's governor vyacheslav gladkov, urged residents to evacuate the border towns. but if a newly posted ukrainian military video was anything to

go by, things could get much tougher for both sides in this war. released with the tag line, plans love silence, there will be no announcement of the start. soldiers are seen urging operational secrecy ahead of an expected counteroffensive. in the past few days, ukrainian officials have tried to temper expectations regarding that counteroffensive, jericka. president zelenskyy said in an interview this weekend that kyiv is ready but avoided making any predictions, saying it could go a variety of different ways. >> debora patta for us in ukraine, thank you. today opec members voted to stick to the cartel's oil production targets for the year but saudi arabia announced it will slash its oil production by 1 million barrels a day in an effort to tighten global supply. today gas prices in the u.s. average $3.55 a gallon. mississippi has some of the lowest prices while california has the highest. still prices are significantly

lower than the $5 a gallon we were all paying just over a year ago. well, today the union representing thousands of movie and tv directors announced it has reached a new three-year contract with hollywood studios. now, the directors guild of america says the tentative deal includes improvements in wages and streaming residuals. at the same time, though, there's no agreement yet with the writers. that strike is now in its fifth week. today on "face the nation," the head of bank of america predicted that the u.s. economy would experience a mild recession later this year in spite of a job market that remains red hot. cbs's mark strassmann has more on that. >> the bill is passed. >> reporter: turmoil averted by washington's treasured blueprint, governing by crisis. >> the great news for americans right now is that we avoided the catastrophe of hitting the debt ceiling. i think the troubling news is that we came that close. >> reporter: but like washington, the rest of us have bills to pay.

good news first. spending consumers keep creating more jobs. employers added another 339,000 jobs in may. gains in health care, construction, leisure and hospitality. but still not enough job seekers for restaurateur nick osborn. >> we are in need of some extra depth, and it has been hard to find that extra depth for sure. >> reporter: but there were also layoffs in the tech sector, and a sharp rise in black unemployment that pushed up the overall jobless rate. it's a snapshot of a complicated, wobbly economy, with stubbornly high inflation and the spectre of a recession. pessimism is having a late spring to remember. in a recent gallup poll, 55% of people believe their financial situation is only fair or poor. half say it's worsening. fewer americans, less than 2 in 3, have $400 squirrelled away for an emergency. >> and that's the bonus.

>> reporter: for house hunters, that struggle hits home. loan applications down roughly 30% from a year ago. why? rising interest rates, now just under 7%, tightening credit, and cities like orlando have a startling lack of inventory. one-third the sellers this market needs. >> they don't want to leave because they don't want to give up their interest rate. >> reporter: for the first time in more than a year, the fed is expected to hold rates steady at its regular meeting later this month. like everyone, uncertain whether this economy is stabilizing. jericka? >> thanks, mark strassmann for us tonight. it's slim pickings for georgia peaches this season. an unusually warm winter followed by a brutal cold snap in march wiped out more than 90% of the crop across the peach state. if you can't get your hands on peaches at the market, it will probably cost you about 50 cents more than last year, according to the usda data. and in washington state cherry

and closed a major highway. meanwhile, wildfires are still spreading in canada. this is in the province of british columbia where more than 60 fires are now raging. one of the largest fires has scorched nearly 600,000 acres there. wow. well, this week britain's prince harry is set to become the first british royal to appear in a court as a witness in 130 years. the duke of sussex is set to testify in london on tuesday. he's one of more than 100 people suing the publisher of "the daily mirror" tabloid and others on accusations of phone hacking on, quote, an industrial scale. well, a grand entrance this weekend for country music legend tanya tucker. take a look at this. the two-time grammy winner and country music hall of fame inductee opened her set at nashville's grand ole opry as you see it right there, riding on horseback to the stage. well, that's a first at the opry's 97-year-history.
