this is cbs news bay area, with reed cowin. a passenger killed in a fiery wreck after a car smashes into a tree. the search for the driver who took off running after that crash. the state attorney general calls it states sectioned kidnapping, officials are taking action after two flights of migrants are unexpectedly essential sacramento. this is rare for june. we monitor the chance of rain and threat of thunderstorms. thank you for joining us on this monday afternoon, i'm anne makovec. we will start with the weather because there is a rare chance of june showers and even storms around the bay area. meteorologist paul hagan has been tracking details and it's less dramatic than it sounds? >> a slim chance of thunderstorms, but any chance of thunderstorms in june is notable. nothings happening around the bay area, we have a couple of showers off the coast of santa cruz county and there are some storms making their way downslope out of the sierra. we will zoom out for a wider perspective to put things in motion and you can see the thunder storms are moving further away from the coast of monterey, but the

thunderstorms going on right now in the high sierra have a chance of making their way into portions of the bay area over the next several hours. futurecast shows showers making their way in for the evening. we are not done with the rain chances, hit or miss showers possible , not widespread, but a drop of rain will slow things down certificate. be prepared for that. we are looking for the potential for cloud to ground lightning strikes around the bay area, with a marginal risk of severe weather for the northern half of the sierra and into northern nevada as well. only a 20% to 30% chance of storms in the first place which means it is lower than a 50/50 chance of them happening at all the we have a longer look ahead at futurecast in just a few minutes. contra costa fire crews are mopping up three separate brushfires near martinez. this is just south of waterfront road and marina vista avenue. the offramp, there, crews

contained those fires quickly but they did cause delays in the northbound lanes. now to sacramento, where a second plane carrying about three migrants arrived this morning, 16 central american migrants were flown by private jet from el paso. looks like both jets were contracted by a florida state contractor. attorney general rob bonta calls this a state sanctioned kidnapping. >> we believe that governor ron desantis is behind it. he has been mistreated his pettiness and lack of substance and xenophobia. >> reporter: attorney general rob bonta blasting florida governor ron desantis. >> he is using human beings as political pawns. it is wrong and we will get to the bottom of it. >> reporter: rob bonta says 16 asylum-seekers were flown in friday on a private jet from texas by a florida state contractor, the company called virtual systems. >> the have hired this company to identify migrants in texas,

not in florida, in texas, and move them to other states. >> reporter: migrants from venezuela and colombia were promised work if they boarded the plane and were then left outside a sacramento catholic diocese building with nothing. >> obviously, we should do our best to pray for them. >> reporter: they are human beings, there are some young people just trying to support or make a life for themselves. there are people who left their children behind in this group. >> in 2022, desantis claimed credit for flying a group from texas to martha's vineyard using the same contractor. a political statement against democratic states he viewed as anti-immigration reform. now, california's attorney general , calling him out for the same stunt. >> it's very strange. at best, it is potentially illegal. it could violate criminal laws , we will get to the bottom of

it. here's a look at what is happening across the bay. the man accused in a deadly crime spree in the south bay is set to be arraigned tomorrow. police say 31-year-old kevin pekka rinne stabbed multiple people and intentionally ran into pedestrians with a stolen car on thursday. he is accused of running over and killing an elderly couple outside of their home in san jose, and stabbing someone to death in a parking lot in milpitas. investigators say it was all random but they are still searching . also in the south bay one person has died after the car they were riding in hit a tree and caught fire. that was in south san jose just before 1:30 this morning on meridian avenue. police say the car was reported stolen, and the driver took off after the crash. >> folks in the area if you saw somebody leaving the scene after the accident, come forward and talk to us. we need

to find out who this individual was because obviously their actions ultimately caused the death of another person. >> this was the 19th traffic death this year. in pittsburgh an employee was sent to the hospital because of a gas leak at the safeway on bailey road just off highway 4. contra costa fire officials says they got the call at around noon. fire crews determined freon was leaking from the malfunctioning refrigerator valve. one safeway employee was having a tough time breathing after the exposure. fire officials say she will be fine, and the store will be back open shortly. hope, love, pride, san jo >> the pride flag is now flying above the san francisco county jail in san bruno. the police and fire departments joined the sheriff's office for today's ceremony. speaking at the ceremony, a deputy coming to san francisco as a teen, speaking to seeing pride

parade saved his life. >> it is imperative to keep in mind the responsibility that we bear as a san franciscans and lgbtq plus members and law-enforcement. that responsibility is to remain a beacon of hope for those who have been marginalized around the country and world. >> reporter: this was the third year the pride flag was raised . police have seen a lot of anti-lgbtq plus legislation introduced across the country. the aclu is tracking 338 bills that have either passed or are still being considered. focus is being put toward trying to stop or limit drag shows. as ow ormerstheir patrons in san jose are growing stronger than ever. >> reporter: colorful and flamboyant and fun down san jos

attract performers from throughout the bay area including san jose's own alpha andromeda who serves as emcee. >> it's fantastic, being able to perform for an audience . >> reporter: the event is put on by silicon valley pride and attracts a boisterous crowd of lgbtq folks and supporters. while some places around the country are banning drag shows and s■hielding children, several of these shows including lonnie bassett who does silicon valley pride. >> my daughter loves seeing drag queens, she thinks this is the most fun thing to do on the planet, and expressing our love for life. >> reporter: marissa and jonas gonzales consider the dragon brunch their family activity but 18-year-old jonas is attracted to the drag community and could be a future performer. she enjoys having the support of her mom. >> being in this sort of scene

against the picturesque shores of sausalito. gailey harbor is a floating cooperative where neighbors live on both full-time. for decades, this tiny community of artists and maritime workers have been fiercely protective of what they called their little slice of heaven. we report it is now facing challenges to their cherished way of life. >> reporter: it is days like these, when heather wilcoxon feels she is living life in harmony . >> filtering in the afternoon and it's really lovely. >> reporter: for more than 40 years, she has lived on the delta queen, a small fishing boat that once served meals to maritime workers. >> i love being here. this is my magic world. >> reporter: that magic world is a place called galilee harbor. a tiny floating

community in sausalito. >> i get to see the marsh, the birds. i am so lucky. >> reporter: just outside her window is a place that time seems to have forgotten. her neighbors still wave at each other as they pass by , and doors are never locked. >> it is so unique, and so special. and, we work very hard to make this happen, here. >> reporter: if you have never heard of galilee, that is by design. this quaint harbor overlooking richardson bay can be hard to find , which is part of its charm. it is believed to be the only wholly owned and operated floating cooperative in the country, where people live on their boats a full-time. residents are either artists or maritime workers, and must be voted in. it all started in 1980, when the city of sausalito brought in bulldozers to clear the

harbor from hippies and maritime workers who settled here. the residence and fought back , and after a huge legal battle, were allowed to stay , provided they maintain the place and remain a low income community. a painter, heather, spends most of her time in a small sunlit studio, a block from the harbor. >> i need that place of calm, and it gives me that. >> reporter: recently, that column has been shaken, as her little slice of paradise is facing real world challenges. inflation and cost of living have made it harder to maintain the harbor and galilee is also surrounded by prime real estate, making it attractive to developers. these days, heather and her neighbors are fighting a proposed 50,000 square-foot construction at the schoonmaker point marina next door. galilee residents worry it will not just block

their views, but also harm the sensitive marsh around them. brad cornelius is galilee harbors manager. he says that while their neighbors are entitled to expand, they hope they do it in a way that is good for everyone. >> they want to build on land that is currently outdoor storage and they want to make it three stories of indoor storage . we would like them to scale that back. >> reporter: schoonmaker told us they have met with galilee residents and are considering appropriate changes. city of sausalito says it is committed to making sure that any potential deal is in the public's interest. as for heather, she says whatever the outcome, residents here will continue to do what they have always done , preserve the harbor and wildlife. >> this is not just for me, it is for everybody. >> reporter: battling the world changing tides , while trying to keep her idyllic sanctuary afloat.

tomorrow , primarily. maybe even a chance of activity lingering into tomorrow night been the culprit as a storm system that is pretty far down to our south, but is close enough to send moisture into the mid-levels of the atmosphere and close enough to allow the odyssey to become unstable. the best chance of thunderstorms over the next several days will reign in the high sierra and northern california. we are still seeing the potential for a couple of top of thunderstorms around the bay area, moving through the r al ernet xt 24 doppler, and here is the full-screen perspective, thunderstorms off to our northeast, that gives us a wider look here as all the activity has been bubbling over the high sierra. you can see crowd to ground lightning strikes . fortunately the vegetation is not dry and there is still snow on the peaks which limits the potential for any fires but ep an eye on. switching over to futurecast as we zoom in to show the showers making their way into the bay area through this evening. maybe grab an umbrella on the

way out the door for evening plans just to be on the safe side, but showers are going to be more miss than hit as we move through the rest of the night but showers starting the day tomorrow and then we will see this pop-up random scattering of thunderstorms throughout the day . again, the odds are that you are going to stay dry but there is the possibility of thunderstorms and that means that we will continue to monitor things carefully. you don't want to be caught out in the open . you can see that by wednesday we are back into a largely tranquil pattern. right now you can see clouds in the distance. the tops of thunder stones over the sierra. temperatures are quite a bit cooler than they were over the weekend but we are back in the 60s around the bay which is where we topped out over the weekend. now to the 70s inland and even 64 degrees right now in santa rosa. say goodbye to warmer temperatures in the 80s that we had over the weekend for inland parts of the bay area. middle and upper 50s for temperatures tonight. eyes tomorrow only reaching the lower 60s along the coast, middle and upper 60s around the bay and also middle and upper 60s for the north bay. cloud cover with slightly cooler temperatures. lower and middle 70s fomost spots r for the inland through the east bay and santa clara valley. warmer

spots reaching the upper 70s. seven day forecast has the cooler weather settling in to make itself right at home but we are down to the lower and middle 60s around the bay by friday, saturday, and sunday. alert days tomorrow, for a meager 20% to 30% chance of storm's which is notable in the month of june but we usually don't see much of any rain chance our way, so we will keep an eye on things. temperatures cover through the 70s in the second weekend in june. the one place it is consistent of courses along the coast. bridgers will state within a degree or two on either side of 60 for those highs every day through the rest of this weekend into the weekend. >> thanks, paul. still ahead, apple throwing its headset into the virtual-reality ring put a look at the high-tech device that will not come cheap. remember, you can watch us anytime, anywhere, on our streaming service, cbs news bay area. you can catch our live newscast plus news and weather updates throughout the day.
