it took off in tennessee sunday afternoon flying to long island in new york. the plane then made a u-turn, and a half hour later, six f-16 fighter jets intercepted the plane as it illegally entered washington's airspace, crashing minutes later. the pilot did not respond to repeated calls from air traffic controllers. cbs news has learned one f-16 pilot saw the cessna pilot slumpover and unresponsive. the sonic boom breaking the sound barrier startled people nearby. a former chairman of the ntsb says the plane's cabin may have lost pressure. >> the pilots become hypoxic, meaning, of course, lack of oxygen. they fall asleep as do the passengers, and then they, because of lack of oxygen, they perish. john rumpel who owned the plane said his daughter and her 2-year-old and nanny and pilot

were on the plane. investigators are planning to issue their first report later on this month as to what may have caused this tragedy. well, we could soon find out if criminal charges will be filed over former president donald trump's handling of classified documents at his florida estate. three of trump's lawyers met yesterday. it comes as more candidates get ready to formally announce that they're running against trump for the republican presidential nomination. naomi ruchim is tracking the latest from new york. naomi, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. at least three more gop hopefuls will jump into the race this week, including some very familiar faces on the campaign trail. former new jersey governor chris christie is hoping to win over republican voters by turning against a man he once endorsed and advised, former president donald trump. today former new jersey governor chris christie will jump into the 2024 gop race during a rally

his family. the fbi says it gave comer a copy. he said he can't hand it over for confidentiality reasons. a second chartered flight carrying about 20 migrants arrived in sacramento yesterday morning. another group of at least 16 migrants arrived friday at a different sacramento airport. reportedly aboard the same private plane. california officials say a florida group along with desantis arranged for the flights. >> they were transported to a religious institution. right now our county social workers are en route and are going to assess all those folks, make sure they have the services and supports that they need. >> desantis has not acknowledged florida is responsible.

meant meantime newsom is suggesting kidnapping charges in the case. overseas and a major dam in southern ukraine was damaged. the breach threatens the area with massive flooding. hundreds of thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate. ukraine and russia blame each other for blowing up the dam. meanwhile there are signs ukrainian forces may have begun their much anticipated spring offensive. debora patta reports. >> reporter: russia's ministry of defense claims this video shows its troops rebelling a major ukrainian advance in the eastern donetsk region. we can't verify this, and kyiv has denied it, doing its best to keep the kremlin off balance, sending mixed signals instead. the latest was this, a video with the tag line plans love silence where ukrainian soldiers are seen urging operational secrecy around any talk of a counteroffensive, but just days ago a different video showed

ground troops preparing for battle armed with western weapons under the banner it's time to take back what is ours. what kyiv will say is that ukrainian forces have advanced once again on bakhmut and retaken territory on the outskirts of the city while just across the border in russia, a new front line has opened up. anti-kremlin militia backed by ukraine have stepped up attacks in some individuals in the belgorod region. what we do know is that its troops are intensifying operations on the eastern front line, possibly looking for russian weaknesses, and ukraine's defense ministry describes this as moving into offensive actions in some areas. debora patta, cbs news, kharkiv.

were hospitalized after being po poisoned. that's according to officials. girls above the sixth grade are not allowed to attend school in afghanistan. most who became sick are between 6 and 12 years old. authorities are searching for the persons response whobl they say had a personal grudge. the bodies of missing men in an iowa building collapse have been recovered and there's new news in the natalie holloway case. those are some of the stories on the morning newsstand. the main suspect in the disappearance of american student natalee holloway is challenging his extradition from peru to the u.s. the lawyer for joran van der sloot said his client changed his mind after the government said the extradition would take place thursday. his disappeared in aruba in 2005. van der sloot is serving a 28-year sentence in peru for the murder of a woman there in 2010. he faces extortion and wire fraud charges in the u.s. the bodies of all three men missing after the partial collapse of an apartment building in iowa have been recovered. the body of a third man was found yesterday. the other two missing residents were discovered over the weekend. the six-story building partially collapsed on may 28th. no one else is known to have died. >> crews have worked very diligently and carefully and respectfully for the task at hand. in doing so, we've had the good fortune of working through the process and giving some closure to some families. >> residents of the building have started filing lawsuits. one accuses the city of davenport and the building's current and former owners of knowing about deteriorating conditions and failing to warn residents. and the "new york post" says tourists at yellowstone national park put a baby elk in a car and drove it to a police station. rangers are again warning the public not to approach wildlife
