engulf areas from new england to the carolinas and the midwest. air quality alerts are in effect this morning. relief may be days away. the thick haze is from hundreds of wildfires that are still burning in cada.asnez isn new y with more. astrid, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. this choking, eye-stinging mess has many of us in the affected area masking up again because another unhealthy air day is in store for us today. state officials, health officials telling people in more than a dozen states to remain indoors if possible. smoke from canadian wildfires has blanketed large swaths of the u.s. the haze visible from boston down to tennessee. the skyline over new york city and other parts of the state turned orange, prompting the national weather service to tweet "no. this is not mars." >> this is an unpredictable series of events. >> reporter: the unhealthy air quality conditions prompted officials there and in other

regions to cancel outdoor school activities. the federal aviation administration slowed air traffic due to low visibility. and several major sports teams including the new york yankees and philadelphia phillies postponed home games wednesday. >> disappointed. that was his first yankee game in this stadium. he was looking forward to it. >> reporter: doctors are cautioning people, especially vulnerable populations such as pregnant people, the elderly, and those with heart or lung conditions, to stay indo should mask up. >> cloth masks won't be effective enough. so if you're going to wear a >> rorter:resideen ter. offered additional support when he spokeeana yey. >> we have alrirefhters and personnel, as well as equipment like water bombers to help canada battle the fires. >> reporter: the biden administration says it is also working with state and local leaders to get accurate air quality information out to

communities. and the good news is that the haze will be gone soon enough. we just need to give the wind time to move the smoke out, and hopefully firefighters in canada will get the fires a bit more contained. anne-marie? >> we need a little help from mother nature. astrid martinez in new york, thank you. sources tell cbs news that former president donald trump's lawyers have been told that he's the target of a federal criminal investigation into the possible mishandling of classified information after he's left office. sources with knowledge of the investigation also say a decision on whether to charge trump could be coming within days. yesterday special counsel jack smith presented evidence to a grand jury in florida. the grand jury also heard from a former trump aide. trump has denied any wrongdoing. and turning now to the 2024 presidential campaign. former vice president mike pence the white house with a rally in iowa yesterday. during his speech, he took

direct aim at donald trump, suggesting his former boss isn't fit for the job. robert costa reports. i'm running for president of the united states. [ applause ] >> reporter: former vice president mike pence made it official this afternoon in iowa, rebuking his former boss and current frontrunner donald trump. >> president trump's words were reckless. >> reporter: pence cited january 6th and how trump pressured him to overturn the 2020 election. >> i hope mike is going to do the right thing. i hope so. >> anyone who asks someone else to put them over the constitution should never be president of the united states again. >> reporter: pence's refusal to do trump's bidding that day made him a target of the former president's loyal base. and the path to the nomination all the more difficult. >> president trump also demanded that i choose between him and the constitution. now voters will be faced with the same choice. >> reporter: with roughly a dozen candidates in the race and

and recovered a handgun.theyhe feud with jackson. >> this was targeted at one individual, and so they knew each other and had an ongoing dispute. >> the alleged gunman has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. this morning, the vatican says pope francis spent a peaceful night in the hospital following abdominal surgery. yesterday the pontiff waved to crowds in st. peter's square before being taken to the hospital. the vatican said the three-hour surgery was successful, and there were no reported complications. the latest procedure comes as the 86-year-old was hospitalized in march for difficulty breathing. the pope's surgeon said francis is in good spirits. >> the surgical operation and the general anesthesia were well tolerated by the pope. he's ake. he's fine, and he's already at

work. >> pope francis is expected to stay in the hospital for up to right now thousands of people are facing a major humanitarian disaster in ukraine after a massive dam burst. these new satellite images show the extent of the catastrophic flooding that was triggered this week. debora patta more from kharkiv. >> reporter: the sheer magnitude of flooding is becoming clear. it sank homes and businesses, leaving thousands trapped in rising waters. desperate residents waved for help from rooftops as ukrainian drones so often used for destruction become lifesavers, dropping fresh drinking water. soldiers and volunteers manning boats have been working tirelessly to evacuate the stranded, hauling them through windows and from the murky waters or simply carrying the

frail and elderly to try land. animals terrified and soaked to the skin come, too. the people of kherson wade through the deluge clutching the few belongings they can carry using whatever stays afloat. and everywhere, anger is close to the surface. 58-year-old peter moloney was arrested yesterday for allegedly spraying wasp killer at officers and attacking journalists. he faces charges including civil disorder and assaulting officers. an fbi agent said video shows him spraying insecticide at officers who were trying to beat back the angry mob. "reuters" says an air india replacement flight picked up stranded passengers after the plane they were on was diverted to russia with engine trouble. the original boeing 777 flight traveling from delhi to san francisco landed safely at an airport in remote siberia on tuesday. it was carrying more than 230 people including some americans. >> we understand that there were less than 50 u.s. citizens aboard that flight. we also understand that a relief aircraft is expected to arrive. we are not aware of any outreach from some of these american citizens to our embassy.
