classified documents after he left office. cag the inment a hoax, ociming . this is the first time in u.s. history a former president is facing federal charges, federal criminal charges, i should say. astrid martinez is in new york with more. astrid, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. there is uncharted territory, of course. a historic move that is likely to rattle the ongoing 2024 presidential race, a race that former president donald trump is determined to stay in. in fact, after trump made the announcement of his indictment on his social media platform, minutes later his campaign sent out a fundraising email telling his followers to donate money to his election campaign. cbs news confirms a federal grand jury has indicted former president trump on charges of mishandling classified documents at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. >> this is a hugely significant development.

it's the first time in american has been indicted on federal charges. >> reporter: three sources familiar with the case say the seven-count indictment involves the retention of national defense information, conspiracy, and obstruction. trump made the announcement on his social media platform last night. >> i'm an innocent man. ome af bau we're leading in the polls by a lot against biden. >> reporter: the indictment comes as trump has mounted another presidential run. his top 2024 gop rival, florida governor ron desantis, came to his defense on twitter posting "the weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society." president biden defended the justice department's independence yesterday before the indictment news broke. >> i have never once, not one single time suggested to the justice department what they should do or not do bringing a

charge or not bringing a charge. >> reporter: trump's at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey. a law enforcement official says u.s. secret service will meet with trump's staff and security today to arrange a plan for his travel and arraignment which is expected tuesday in miami federal court. i can tell you that the white house has not given an official comment yet, neither has the th three months after former president trump was indicted in new york on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and pleaded not guilty. >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you veuc ahead on "cbs mornings," our team of experts including chief political analyst john dickerson and cbs news legal analyst rikki klieman will break down trump's indictment and what's next in the case. to our other top story this morning now, hazardous smoke from the wildfires in canada continues to impact large parts

of the east. the smoke could hang around in some areas today and then ease up by this weekend. christina ruffini reports from virginia. >> reporter: smoke from the canadian wildfires made an undiplomatic stop in d.c., masking monuments, shuttering stadiums, and forcing the pandas at the national zoo inside. >> the air quality's bad outside, you know, staying indoors in well ventilated places is beneficial. >> reporter: with air quality in d.c. at hazardous, outdoor dining was taken off the menu, hefromsthma whctlner. >> the small particulate matter in woifrgs wildfires in particular goes deep into the lungs causing irritation and airway reactivity that results in exacerbation. >> reporter: more than 400 wildfires are burning in canada, polluting the skies over much of the east coast.

philadelphia is experiencing its worst air quality in 24 years, and state workers in new jersey were told to come in late. >> the scale of this is extraordinary. >> reporter: the sky over manhattan looked downright dystopian wednesday as smog lit up the horizon red obscuring the historic skyline. what a difference a day makes. >> reporter: i'm lilia luciano in new york where the air has cleared a bit. it could still be dangerous for people with underlying health conditions. that's why the city is giving out free masks to anybody who needs them. >> i think if i wear two, it would be much better for me. >> reporter: with young children at greater risk, new york city schools has switched to remote learning. >> the message is this is not over. we might get a little respite, but i don't want people to let down their guard. >> reporter: neither rai u.s. postal service. >> you can see the air is not like -- you don't want to breathe it in too much.

>> reporter: construction sites around the city kept going, too. >> i'm out because i need work. but everybody can stay home. >> reporter: and dog walker monique benjamin says she's still showing up for her canine clients. >> i was wearing a mask for most of my walk with toby here. i do have asthma, so i do worry about it. >> reporter: the silver lining in all this smoke is the epa tells cbs news most healthy adults and children will recover quickly from smoke exposure and will not suffer any long-term health effects. christina ruffini, cbs news, arlington, virginia. the main suspect in the disappearance of american student natalee holloway is scheduled to be arraigned today in alabama. joran van der sloot arrived in the u.s. yesterday after being extradited from peru. he faces extortion and wire fraud charges for trying to obtain $250,000 from holloway's mother in exchange for disclosing the location of her body. holloway disappeared in aruba in 2005. van der sloot is serving a 28-year sentence in peru for

murder. the supreme court issued a surprising ruling in favor of black voters in an alabama congressional redistricting case. conservative chief justice john roberts and justice brett kavanaugh joined the court's three liberals in yesterday's 5-4 decision. it upheld a lower court ruling that alabama's republican drawn congressional districts disenfranchised black voters. >> the alabama legislature engaged in race-based gerrymandering. and they're not the only ones throughout the country who have done that, and we can at least draw some comfort from the fact that the 1965 voting rights act remains alive. >> the ruling means alabama will have to draw a new congressional map for next year's elections. overseas now, we are learning more about the suspect

who attacked young children with a knife. the victims range in age from 1 they're being treated at a hospital at this hour. charlie d'agata has the latest and, of course, we want to warn you that some of the details are graphic. >> reporter: harrowing cell phone footage shows the alleged attacker roaming around the children's playground, knife in hand. what happens next is too distressing to show. stros.eggetingby he was heard shouting "in e s c" four children are in the hospital, all under 3 years old, suffering from life-threatening injuries, police say. two adults were also wounded. "all of a sudden a lady says run, run, there's a guy who is stabbing everybody," says this witness. "he stabbed some children. run, run." the police opened fire wounding the suspect in the arrest. he's described as a syrian citizen with legal refugee

an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the collapse. california's governor proposed a new amendment aimed at limiting gun violence, and a florida shooting suspect entered a plea. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports a white florida woman accused of shooting through her front door and killing her black neighbor appeared in court for the first time. 58-year-old susan lorincz eaded several charges including manslaughter. she allegedly shot a.j. owens last week when the mother of four confronted her about an incident with her children. lorincz said she was afraid owens was going to kill her when she banged on her door. and she told detectives she called owens' children racist slurs in the months before t according to an arrest report released yesterday. "the guardian" says the house oversight committee plans to hold a hearing on a whistleblower's u.f.o. claims. former intelligence official

mortgage rates fall for the the supreme court throws jack daniel's a bone. shanelle kaul has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: u.s. stocks surged thursday officially sending wall street into bull market territory. the dow gained 168 points. the nasdaq was up by 133, and the s&p 500 gained 26 points. mortgage rates dropped for the first time in three weeks on thursday. according to data from freddie mac, the average 30-year fixed rate fell from 6.79% last week to 6.71% this week. freddie mac's chief economist says while affordability is still an issue, inventory remains the biggest challenge for prospective home buyers. sales of masks and air filters are spiking as smoke from canadian wildfires is impacting air quality in large parts of the country. amazon reports air filters were the top gainers in sales for
