donald trump is standing defiant after pleading not guilty to federal charges in a classified documents case. after his arraignment in florida, the former president addressed a crowd of supporters in new jersey last night denying allegations he mishandled top-secret documents. he also attacked the prosecution and vowed to stay in the 2024 presidential race. jarred hill is at trump tower in new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. former president trump last night in that bombastic speech really defiant saying he's not backing down, whether it's in the legal arena or the political one with the 2024 nomination coming up. all this, he says, as he is continuing to fight these charges. >> this day will go down in infamy -- >> reporter: last night a defiant former president trump slammed the federal case against him at his golf club in bedminster, new jersey. it came hours after he pleaded not guilty to 37 charges accusing him of retaining classified documents illegally

and trying to hide them from investigators after receiving a subpoena. >> i had every right to have these documents. >> reporter: before his historic arraignment out of miami federal court yesterday the former president surrendered to authorities, got swabbed for dna, and was fingerprinted, though no mug shot was taken, and he was allowed to keep his passport. raj abhyanker was inside the courtroom where trump was joined by aide and co-defendant walt nauta. >> quiet. there was a few people whispering in the back. it was very serious. >> reporter: special counsel jack smith was also in the miami courtroom. on tuesday the judge barred former president trump from discussing the case with his co-defendant. he's also not allowed to engage with potential witnesses. since many of them work for him, that could be tough to enforce. crowds of trump supporters and demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse. one protester dressed in prison stripes was arrested after he briefly jumped in front of the motorcade. after his day in court, trump

visited with supporters at a cuban restaurant before heading back to new jersey where he held a closed door fundraiser. let's talk about the politics of this. former president trump here is saying that this indictment, these charges will only help him in his bid for the 2024 nomination for the gop and then for the presidency as a whole, saying that the charges are wrong. and looking at some of the new cbs news polling around this, he might be onto something here. about 75% of likely gop primary voters say that this indictment either will not change their view of the former president or will change their view for the better. back to you. >> very interesting. he certainly wasted no time fundraising off of it as he has under previous occasions. jarred hill at trump tower in new york. thank you. breaking overnight, a federal judge is allowing former magazine columnist e. jean carroll to amend her original defamation lawsuit against former president trump. last month a jury awarded

carroll $5 million in another civil lawsuit against trump. the jury found that trump sexually abused and defamed her. yesterday the judge ruled she can update a second defamation lawsuit for comments trump made about her on a cnn town hall a day after the jury's verdict. she's seeking more than $10 million in additional damages. an investigation is under way after 22 american service members were injured in a helicopter, military helicopter accident in syria. the pentagon says no enemy fire was involved in sunday's, quote, mishap. a spokeswoman says a chinook chopper had a problem with one rotor that caused a hard landing during takeoff. "the new york times" says the soldiers were part of a secretive army commando unit. the u.s. is sending ukraine a new military aid package worth up to $325 million. it comes as a russian missile attack yesterday on ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy's

hometown in central ukraine killed at least 11 people. video showed buildings on fire and damaged vehicles in the city of kryvyi rih. u.s. officials say that the new aid package includes rockets, missiles, and other munitions. >> in terms of this package, this is something that meets the priorities of the ukrainians. armor, artillery, air defense, these are all priorities that we've laid out and something that will be discussed at the contact on thursday. >> zelenskyy also hailed what he called the forward movement of troops in his country's counteroffensive in eastern and southern ukraine. back at home now, the house passed a resolution that would repeal a new biden administration federal gun regulation. the new rule requires anyone who uses an armed stabilizing brace on a gun to register the weapon and pay a fee or remove the brace. the accessory has been used in several mass shootings. the resolution now heads to the

senate. if it passes, president biden says he'll veto it. celebrations turned into chaos after monday's nba finals game in de won their first championship in team history. nine people were injured in a mass shooting. police say that it could be linked to a drug deal gone wrong. karen morfitt from our cbs denver station has the latest. the denver nuggets can finally call themselves nba champions! [ cheers ] >> reporter: after the denver nuggets clinched their first nba championship over the miami heat, thousands of fans poured into the streets to celebrate. [ cheers ] jubilation quickly turned into terror after a gunman opened fire following an altercation between several individuals. denver police could be seen running toward the gunfire. >> multiple gunshot wounds. 2000 block -- >> reporter: officials say nine people were shot. they were taken to an area hospital, and they're expected

to survive their injuries. >> we were able to triage these patients, identify which were the most seriously injured, and get them rapidly to the operating room. >> reporter: police say at least 20 rounds were fired, two suspects were arrested, and at least five guns were recovered as well as bags of fentanyl pills. police believe the shooting may have been connected to a drug deal. >> certainly does appear to have thweere a lae amnt o ugs. >> rte dveooting is nowhe mass shooting in the united states so far this year. denver police say an investigation is still ongoing, and more arrests could be made. thousands are expected to gather on thursday for a championship parade for denver nuggets players. officials say there will be heightened security. karen morfitt for cbs news, denver. coming up, acid at a playground. children suffer burn-like injuries as police search for suspects.

authorities say the two men pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of raiding, demonstrating, or picketing in a capitol building. a third active duty marine pleaded guilty to the same charge last month. all three will be sentenced later this year. they face a maximum sentence of six months. "usa today" says two children suffered burn-like injuries after acid was poured on three slides at a massachusetts park playground. it happened sunday in the town of longmeadow, south of springfield. authorities say someone stole the acid after breaking into a swimming pool storage room at the park. the mother of the injured children said that she noticed a puddle at the bottom of the slide but didn't think much of it at first. >> cara started crying and saying, mommy it hurts, it hurts. >> why would you do that? you don't want to hurt anybody, especially little kids, most vulnerable people. >> police are searching for suspects. resle have suffere their hands or arms.

a new report shows inflation is cooling in the u.s. rising costs slowed for an 11th straight month in may as grocery prices eased again and gas more than reversed the previous month's rise. overall, consumer prices rose 4% from a year earlier but down 4.9%n april and 40 9% last june. it's an encouraging sign ahead of the fed's meeting today that could resu the slowing inflation may not be great if you rely on social security checks. the amount you get could dip next year due to cost of living adjustments. one nonprofit group says it may mean problems for seniors whose household spending may remain high for essentials like food and housing. and heinz wants to make your dipping experience exciting. they're releasing six new sauces including creamy chimichurri and

and the first in stanley cup ' h expansion nhl team founded in just 2017. this morning we are remembering pulitzer prize-winning novelist cormac mccarthy. he died yesterday of natural causes at his home in santa fe, new mexi mccarthy was known for his violent and dark themes depicted in his novels "blood meridian," "the road," and "no country for old men." he was 89 years old. the grammies are adding three new categories. for the first time there will be awards for best african music performance, best alternative jazz album, and best pop dance recording. the group says the changes were made to reflect the current musical landscape and the range of relevant musical genres. the 66th grammy awards will be held in 2024. coming up on "cbs mornings" now, actor elizabeth olsen drops
