in custody. they said he had several outstanding warrants from several law enforcement agencies. good evening. i am sara donchey. the earlier news was in san jose where explosions started popping one after the other and for a minute or two there was enough commotion that a woman but she was hearing an active shooter, but it wasn't that. chaotic nevertheless. a huge fire broke out at a storage facility and it was what may have been burning inside that caused such a spectacle. this is what is left. live pictures right now of this public storage facility in south san jose. firefighters have a long night ahead of putting out hotspots, cleaning up all the mess and figuring everything out. the fire was on blossom hill road across the street from the westfield oakridge mall. you could hear those popping sounds from the fire. listen. that

piece of video gives you a sense of why some people thought there could've been a shooting happening. look at all this smoke over the san jose skyline for miles, right until sunset. this is a time lapse from our tower camera and we also have new video of when it started. look at that! this is bruce, who posted this video. he said he saw this happening in real time while looking out of his back door. now it is a matter of figuring out why this happened. our len ramirez has more on the fire that spread panic, fear and even desperation from people who saw and heard it. >> reporter: the fire station is right across the street from the public storage building that blew up and caught fire, but in the short response time period the flames were so intense that there was little that firefighters could do to put out the flames. firefighters surrounded the public storage building on blossom hill road in caudle,

spreading water from all sides and over the top, but the flames kept burning. a crowd gathered on the streets nearby, some of them storage customers like diane, who could barely watch their keepsakes go up in flames. >> three generations of family belongings, but the most important thing is it is my father's hole-in-one golf ball that is in there. >> reporter: the fire began with a powerful blast at 6: 30, rattling walls and windows blocks away. things continued to blow up inside as the evening set in. >> i was terrified. i was in my house and my whole house shook. i thought at first, the first thought that came to me was that we were having an earthquake. once that combed down i was wondering if my neighbor upstairs was maybe dropping furniture all over the place. it was just rumbling really loud. then the next thing is oh my god, we got an active shooter, because i kept hearing pop pop pop. really

loud things. >> reporter: the fire quickly grew to three alarms. firefighters realized early on that there was no way to save the property that was burning, and no one was believed to be inside, so the set up defensive positions to guard other storage buildings from the intense flames and heat. neighbors cited the popping and wondered if fireworks were somehow involved. the fire department so far has no answers. >> we don't know what is in the storage unit. the crews are conducting defensive operations. >> reporter: at this point there are no injuries. firefighters will continue pouring water on the building throughout the night and wi begin their investigation as soon as it is safe to get in. >> once again, the explosion sounds are what had all of us in the newsroom wondering what was inside the storage unit. as you heard, firefighters have not told us as of yet, but they

now being charged with assault. he was terminated in april for this incident during a traffic stop last july, and a warning, the video might be hard to watch. that body camera video released by apd shows punching, kicking, elbowing and kneeing a suspect who was refusing to get into his squad car. he was pulled over for a license plate violation when they found that he had an outstanding warrant. an investigation found four use of force policies which led to his firing, and this week he was charged with a misdemeanor count of assault by a public officer. we should also ntion at is named as one of the officers o of the racist text messages that recently rocked the department, but is not accused of sending or responding to any of them. as far as the assault charge, police chief stephen ford issued a statement saying, in part, the antioch police department is committed to accountability and transparency. this unfortunate

incident is not reflective of the women and men who serve our community. a fire that burned through a walnut creek garage last night started up again this morning, and look at that! it may have been sparked by a battery inside of a vacuum cleaner, and it happened at this house on amherst bury court on white cliff way. the lithium-ion battery was apparently inside of a cordless vacuum cleaner that was just being scored at the garage. the fire was so bad that happens. firefighters had to take off part of the roof of the house. andrea nakano shows us that this is a growing trend that has at least two bay area fire departments very concerned. >> reporter: contra costa county fire says it is not yet time to panic but is time to educate the community, especially since we are surrounded by lithium-ion batteries. crews were busy cleaning up a burned down home. they believe a fire sparked because of a charging

lithium-ion battery. neighbors say this incident makes them think twice about what they are charging and when. >> i am thinking i have to go check every outlet in my house. we leave stuff charging overnight. >> reporter: fires that have been started by charging lithium-ion batteries have been found in contra costa county and berkeley. >> in the last nine days we have had three of these fires. we have noticed an increasing trend towards more of them over the last year or two. >> reporter: they say residents can move devices to the garage and don't leave them charging for days at a time. this includes anything from your cordless vacuum cleaner to your electric toothbrush. >> anything that you use by way of an electrical appliance , use electric power and doesn't have a cord plugged into the wall, it is guaranteed to have a rechargeable battery.

is part of a program by the thoroughbred retirement foundation called the second chances, which teaches inmates to become groomers and stable cleaners using horses rescued from the slaughterhouse. >> i got a second chance just like we do. >> reporter: here, amidst the concrete and barbed wire, redemption and empathy are found in the company of these animals. heidi richards is a correctional officer and the s while the idea is to give inmates the skill they can use on the outside, the program has proven valuable in more ways than one. >> these horses work magic on them. they break down the walls. these guys care about these horses, which in turn teaches them to care about themselves and others. >> reporter: two thirds of inmates will return to prison after their release. programs like second chances are known to reduce recidivism rates . of

little world, because people in the north bay, the south bay and east bay have very different weather going on! >> it is like a fog globe! we are going to give your voice a little rest for a couple of minutes. let's talk weather here. we are going to continue our gradual warm-up as we head through the next couple of days, all the way through the first half of the weekend, but there will be a temperature drop from saturday to sunday, so father's day on sunday and the juneteenth holiday will be noticeably cooler. temperatures are cool across the board right now. mostly mid-to-upper 50s to around 60 degrees at the moment in concord. that will continue to spread across the bay and will be a fairly shallow marine layer but will be able to infiltrate some of the inland valleys but dissipate quickly in those inland valleys, backing up to the coast already by late morning and even right along the coast i think you will see the sun breaking through as we head into early afternoon. temperatures tonight are drug not dropping much further at all, right around 54

degrees. low to mid 50s through the rest of tonight. tomorrow the highs are very close to normal for this time of kland in the east bay, 70s in the peninsula and near 80 in san jose and for most of the santa clara valley. low to mid 80s inland and in the east bay. that is still warm but slightly below average for this time of year and well below average for the inland valleys mostly because the southwesterly winds are still pushing the marine influence further into those valleys, where is the oakland hills block it from the east bay and the santa cruz mountains block it from the santa clara valley. if you are heading today's game tomorrow afternoon here we have the start time. the game starts at 12: 37, so temperatures will be in the 60s and comfortable out there. the first concert of the new season is on sunday with temperatures in the low 60s and it will be mostly gray overhead with some glimmers of

sunshine. again, sunday will be the cooler half of the weekend, but only by a few degrees around the bay. we will bounce back as we head towards tuesday and wednesday. sunday and monday will be the coolest days for the entire bay area with a more noticeable drop for the santa clara valley. san jose will drop to 71 on monday with a similar drop in the east bay but not much of a decrease in the coast. you go from 63 to friday to down to 59 by sunday and monday. i think you can handle that with plenty of june gloom to go around. vern? what happened on the field for the hot, streaking a's?

baseball up top and hey, nothing lasts forever, but we were falling in love with what the a's were doing. they just pulled themselves up from the major leagues' worst record with a seven-game win streak! how did a's feel right now? oakland looked to keep the race frustrated. second inning, two on and a three-run home run!
