part of an extreme weather outbreak pummelling states. in abbeyville, alabama, a tornado cut through damaging a few buildings while a nearby town fared far worse with a twister downing trees and power lines. >> i was very scared. my heart was beating real fast. i ran in the room to get my little girl. kept calling her name. she wouldn't wake up. i'm like, come on, there's a tornado out here. >> western arkansas also hit with massive hail yesterday. you can see it pummelling the water. there were reports of some smashed windows as it fell from the sky. and a new york city grand jury has indicted a marine veteran in the choke hold death of a homeless man on a subway train. video on board the train last month shows 24-year-old daniel penny restraining jordan neely. penny was initially charged with second-degree manslaughter. new york city mayor eric adams confirmed the indictment yesterday. in a video statement released by

his lawyers last weekend, penny said he tried to subdue neely after he threatened passengers. >> i was scared for myself, but i saw women and children. he was yelling in their faces, saying -- saying these threats. some people said i was trying to choke him to death, which is also not true. i was trying to restrain him. >> penny's lawyers say neely had a history of violent behavior and mental illness. the central bank voted unanimously to put a pause on interest rate hikes. federal reserve chair jerome powell yesterday issued a warning saying it may not last long. he said that's because inflation hasn't cooled as much as the fed would like it to, and that means more hikes could come later this year. jarred hill has latest from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the pause is probably not permanent which does beg the question why do this at all. well, the fed chair said they want to see how the past 15 months of rate hikes are impacting the people and the

economy of this country. and we are seeing some signs of progress. the federal reserve is halting interest rate hikes. the first break after the fastest series of increases in four decades. fed chair jerome powell made the announcement a day after the latest data showed inflation has cooled from its peak 9% down to 4%. but powell warned the pause will be short-lived. >> nearly all committee participants view it as likely that some further rate increases will be appropriate this year to bring inflation down to 2% over time. >> reporter: after that warning, u.s. stocks had a mixed closing on wednesday. >> the markets are already thinking about july and beyond. >> reporter: while the cost of electricity, eggs, and meat, and gasoline went down in may, overall grocery prices were nearly 6% more expensive than last year. the prices of margarine, flour, and bread all up. >> we've seen huge increases in core staples.

>> reporter: jenna hunts berger owns whisked bakery. >> we're not seeing a growth in our sales, and i do think that's because consumers are just tired of inflation, and they're being cautious with their discretionary income. >> reporter: ten rate hikes have made borrowing more expensive. the 30-year fixed mortgage rate has jumped nearly 7%. >> people that have locked in low interest rates, are they going to want to sell their house and buy something else for close to 7%? they're going to hang on. >> reporter: the next rate increase could some as soon as next month when the fed meets again. so let's talk big picture here when it comes to what happens next. the federal reserve is signaling that it could raise interest rates two more times by the end of the year. and even if/when it stops hiking it will keep borrowing rates at a peak for months to come. we are not out of the woods yet with this. and i'm tired. >> i know, i know. listen, no one wants a recession, so steady as she goes. >> there you go. >> jarred hill, thank you.

attorney general merrick garland is speaking out for the very first time since the historic federal indictment of donald trump. he's defending his prosecutors and agents against heated attacks from the former president. trump is falsely claiming president biden is directing cases for the justice department. garland says a special counsel, jack smith, conducted the probe and touted his department's independence. >> as i said when i appointed mr. smith, i did so because it underscores the justice department's commitment to both independence and accountability. >> trump pleaded not guilty tuesday to 37 federal charges alleging he mishandled documents. on the campaign trail mike pence said trump can defend himself. >> i can't defend what is alleged in this indictment, but the president's entitled to his day in court. >> top sources close to trump's rivals tell our robert costa

they sense growing vulnerability as trump faces mounting legal challenges. still, trump has a commanding lead in the polls, and his campaign says it raised over $6 million since he was indicted. demolition work on a section of i-95 that collapsed in philadelphia is expected to be completed today. pennsylvania's governor says as soon as that's done, work on fixing the highway and rebuilding the collapsed overpass will begin. he did not say how long it would take, though. the overpass collapsed sunday after a tanker carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel crashed and caught fire. the truck driver was killed. overseas, the search continues for what could be hundreds of people missing after a fishing boat packed with migrants capsized and sank off the coast of southern greece. the boat believed to be heading from libya to italy sank yesterday. nearly 80 bodies have been recovered. more than 100 people have been rescued so far. authorities say it appears the vessel capsized after people on

board abruptly moved to one side. survivors were taken to a warehouse shelter in greece. heussi i than 20 ukrainian they were taken prisoner last year as they fought russian troops in mariupol. they face sentences ranging from 15 years to life if prison if convicted. russia has since captured mariupol which has been reduced to smoldering ruins. meantime, russian forces hit southern and eastern ukraine with missiles yesterday killing at least six people. the attacks come as ukrainian forces continue to take back land seized by the russians. ian lee takes us inside the front lines.isally for ukrainian troops. night vision gives there territorial defense brigade an advantage as they silently get into position. when day breaks, they attack. this soldier, call sign black smith, stormed the russian positions. "their defenses are strong," he

"the russians had time to dig in and defended fiercely, but lately they started running away." his squad just returned from the counteroffensive in what the deputy minister described as extremely fierce battles along the front. these troops are recalibrating their weapons after heavy fighting on the front lines. this captain commanded the troops as they advanced under cover. >> we have some groups which goes through the trees because the field's not good. >> reporter: there's a rule here when navigating land mines -- >> to be slow, to be silent, and to be safe. >> reporter: slow, silent, and safe. that lesson helps them reach a russian trench. but war has taught them don't touch, he says, anything could

overhead power lines. the driver, though, was able to get out safely. there are disturbing allegations involving a morgue at harvard medical school, and starbucks was ordered to pay millions in damages in a racial case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports a federal jury ordered starbucks to pay more than $25 million to a white former regional manager who was fired amid fallout there -- from a racial incidents. shannon phillips said that she and other white employees were unfairly punished after the 2018 arrests of two black men. the men were sitting in a philadelphia starbucks without ordering anything. phillips, who was not involved in the incident, claimed starbucks was looking for a sacrificial lamb to calm the public outrage after the arrests. cbs news philadelphia says police and the family of a missing teenager are asking for help finding her. 18-year-old shalaya porter was last seen ten days ago. family and friends have been handing out flyers looking for

information. they say porter did not show up for her high school graduation. >> she was looking forward to graduating. she was looking forward to going to college. she was looking forward to living life and moving on to her next chapter. this is completely out of character when it comes to her. she don't go this long without calling her mom. she don't go this long without contacting friends. >> she was accepted to morgan state university in baltimore. "the boston globe" says the former manager of harvard medical school's morgue was charged in connection with the alleged theft and sale of human body parts. his wife and three others were also charged. prosecutors say 55-year-old cedr apaodrtichen nda geoknspiracy and sell portions of cadavers donated to school for research and education. they say lodge sometimes took the body parts back to his new hampshire home without the school's knowledge.

law by the end of the year. the faa ramping up security on new planes, and you can now wear taco bell on your feet. shanelle kaul has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks closed mixed wednesday as wall street responds to the federal reserve pushing pause on its historic rate hiking campaign. the dow lost 232 points. the nasdaq gained 53, and the s&p 500 was up by 3 points. the faa is beefing u new airplanes will soon need to have a second barrier between a passenger cabin and cockpit. the faa says the additional barrier might look like a gate and will be locked into place when the cockpit door is open. pilots have been pushing for the safety device since 9/11. lawmakers have not decided if current planes will need to be retrofitted. u.p.s. has tentatively agreed to install fans and heat shields in delivery vehicles and to guarantee air conditioning in new trucks.

photographs taken by mccartney during the early days of beatlemania. it captures behind-the-scenes moments of the fab four on their way to international stardom. and prosecutors in new mexico are leveling new accusations against the weapons expert on the set of alec baldwin's movie "rust." prosecutors allege in new court filings that they have witnesses who will tell hannah gutierrez-reed drank and smoked marijuana in the evenings during the filming of "rust" in 2021. they say she was likely hung over when she allegedly loaded a live bullet into a gun and gave it to baldwin. the gun went off during rehearsals killing the cinematographer. baldwin and gutierrez-reed were each charged have involuntary manslaughter, but the charge against baldwin was later dropped. coming up on "cbs mornings," singer/actor sara bareilles stops by to discuss her movie, "waitress, the musical -- live on broadway." i'm anne-marie green.
