news app on your cell phone or connected tv. i'm shanelle kaul, cbs news, new york. it's friday, june 16th, 2023. this is the "cbs morning news." america hacked. a cyberattack targets several u.s. government agencies. we have the latest on who may be the behind it. castle attack. a tourist is dead and another injured in an alleged attack by an american at a popular tourist destination. eliminating junk fees. president biden makes a push to cut hidden fees for concertgoers. find out when it takes effect. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a cyber-extortion gang based in russia is being blamed for a worldwide cyberattack that hit some u.s. federal and state government agencies.

among those affected are the department of energy, johns hopkins-affiliated hospitals in maryland and florida, and the minnesota department of education. officials say the u.s. military and american intelligence agencies were not impacted. jarred hill is here in new york with the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. still something that a lot of people are keeping an eye on. this is something officials say they've been watching since last month when they say that this extortion gang got access to a file-sharing app that a lot of businesses and government agencies use. take a look. u.s. officials say a russia-linked ransomware group called clop is responsible for a global cyberattack that has struck multiple u.s. agencies and nato allies. >> this ransomware group compromised a vulnerability in a widely used software. >> reporter: the software is called "move it." a convenient way for governments and businesses to move large files.

the cyberattack has affected the department of energy, multiple johns hopkins related hospitals, the university of georgia, and british airways. officials say the group has started to release data to export companies. >> the adversaries have a chance to get two bites from the same apple, meaning first they can put ransomware on your computer and say you can never use your data again unless you pay us money. after you pay, they come back and say i have a copy of your data, and i will release it unless you pay me again. >> reporter: former defense intelligence official bob gourley says cyber criminals can release embarrassing information from medical records or even personal banking data. that can then open those affected up to further fraud. cbs news confirmed that the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency is providing support to agencies targeted in this attack. so while this group is believed

to be from russia, government officials are saying they are telling reporters there's no evidence that the hackers are coordinating with the russian government. also, officials say a lot of the organizations had already patched this vulnerability before this group clop could move in, but still always a good reminder to make sure that the information that you're using is safe and secure as much as possible at least. >> good advice. jarred hill in new york, thank you. >> reporter: sure. a massachusetts air national guardsman was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly leaking top-secret military intelligence on line. 21-year-old jack teixeira was indicted on six counts of willful retention and transmission of classified national defense information. it includes information about ukraine's air defenses and a plot to target u.s. forces overseas. he faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted. a deadly tornado ripped through the texas panhandle. at least three people were

killed, and dozens more injured yesterday in the town of perryton near the oklahoma border. at least one was killed in a mobile home park that took a direct hit. at least 30 trailers were damaged or destroyed. firefighters rescued people from the rubble. more than 200,000 customers lost power in texas and oklahoma. and severe weather also hit the gulf coast yesterday. this continuous lightning was spotted in the sky over dauphin island, alabama. miami mayor francis suarez is the latest candidate to announce that he's running for the republican presidential nomination. the 45-year-old cuban american officially launched his bid for the white house yesterday. during a speech last night in california, suarez tried to offer an alternative to former president donald trump and florida governor ron desantis. >> it is time for a leader with a record of real results, not just rhetoric, who believes with all his heart in the american dream, who wants to share it

with everyone regardless of race, religion, or complexion. >> in an interview with the "ap," he said said he's the only hispanic candidate in the gop race he has a lot of credibility in a conversation about reforming immigration law. an american man is under arrest in germany after allegedly attacking two female tourists. one is a woman who died. the assault happened wednesday at a very popular attraction. imtiaz tyab reports. >> reporter: it's one of germany's most picturesque tourist destinations -- the inspiration behind disney's fairytale castle -- that was the scene of a brutal attack. german police say two american women, just 21 and 22 years old, were visiting the site like so many others but were allegedly lured by a stranger to a nearby hiking trail and lookout point where investigators say this 30-year-old american man attacked them. the younger of the two was rely

before they were both pushed into a deep ravine falling 165 feet. this is the moment a helicopter crew rescued one of the women. the younger of the two died overnight in hospital. eric abnery from new york was visiting the castle when they filmed the rescue and arrest. >> his face was covered in deep red scratch marks, and his neck, as well. there was clearly a struggle there. and he just had a frown on his face. he didn't say anything. he had a sort of disturbed look. >> reporter: german police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, london. we're learning more about the deaths of two americans at a mexican resort. abby lutz and john heathco were found dead tuesday in their luxury hotel room about 40 miles north of cabo, san lucas. officials in mexico say autopsies suggest they died of, quote, intoxication by an undetermined substance.

police say ten people on the bus were also injured and taken to hospitals including the driver. the driver of the truck was also hurt. the crash is under investigation. and there are new findings on how early humans walked, and a possible clue in the collapse of a florida condo. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports the swimming pool deck of the florida condo that collapsed two years ago failed to meet building codes according to federal investigators. preliminary findings into the surfside collapse which killed 98 people were released yesterday. investigators are trying to determine if a failure of the pool deck could have triggered the collapse. they said many of the pool deck's supporting columns lacked sufficient strength. a final report isn't expected until 2025. cnn says british researchers used the skeleton of a more than three million-year-old human ancestor called lucy to determine how she walked.

they used 3d technology on the fossils that were found in ethiopia nearly 50 years ago. lucy's leg and pelvis mus econr of the skeletons and data from humans. while some experts believe lucy walked in a crouched position like chimpanzees, the 3d model shows something a little different. >> lucy was very apt at walking around on two legs and then also was a very capable climber. those sensors in lucy had the exact same capability as a modern human. they were the exact same. >> researchers hope to eventually create a full digital model of lucy. and "the guardian" says bill cosby is being sued by nine more women in nevada over sexual assault allegations. the lawsuit filed wednesday in federal court alleges the women were drugged and assaulted between 1979 and 1992 in las vegas, reno, and lake tahoe. homes, dressing rooms, and hotels. cosby denies the allegations.

action against so-called junk fees during his "state of the union" address. >> i know how unfair it feels when a company overcharges you and gets away with it. >> reporter: he was joined by executives from private sector companies that offer all-in pricing or have agreed to in the coming months. companies including live nation and its ticketmaster platform, as well as seat geek, airbnb, and some event venues that have committed to eliminating hidden fees. live nation came under fire earlier this year for the botched handling of taylor swift concert tickets and for including surprise fees. it's now committing to up-front pricing at its venues and through ticketmaster, making the total cost visible from the start. >> this is a win for consumers in my view and proof that our crackdown on junk fees has real momentum. >> reporter: live nation hosts more than 30 million fans at hundreds of u.s. venues and festivals every year. with inflation continuing to plague american families, the white house says ending the unwelcome surprise of hidden
