. from cbs news bay area this is the evening edition. now, at 11:00, multiple shootings in san francisco in a popular tourist spot. plus, president biden is in full campaign mode making a visit to the bay area tomorrow. and a danville man spent his entire life wondering who his real father is. how he finally got answers from a letter written decades ago. good evening. a violent night in some of san francisco's most popular tourist attractions. >> the police say they were related, two victims were shot and taken to the hospital >> the first shooting was reported at beach in stockton street across from pier 39. the other happened moments later at embarcadero and howard streets. betty yu joins us now with the latest. betty, a lot to figure out here.

>> reporter: yes, a lot of details we don't know exactly how these two shootings are related at this time. as you said, both of them happened at two of san francisco's most popular attractions for visitors, pier 39 and the embarcadero this evening. there were many visitors and tourists just out and about. there was a young girl on the ground and officers tending to that victim. this is near the embarcadero. this driver captured an suv that crashed into the medium nearby. she witnessed a rolling gun battle between two cars and erratic driving before this collision. not far away at pier 39 the police say just before 7:00 p.m. they were called to a shooting near fisherman's wharf. the victims were rushed to the hospital in unknown conditions. at the scene the officers learned that there were possibly two cars involved in this shooting. at this time

we have no information on the suspects. several parked cars were found with bullet holes and tourists were all along the waterfront. >> sfpd has not confirmed much information about this second waterfront shooting including how many victims were found at this location. there was a heavy police presence, as you can see, and several cruisers on the screen. the street was blocked off for this investigation. we spoke with witnesses who saw parts of the violence. >> we were driving, thought we heard fireworks and then bullets went through the windshield. i yelled at my sister to get on the ground and went down to the ground and jumped out the book. >> it was scary. my life flashed between my eyes. >> are you injured? >> i -- i got glass in my arms. >> a lot of rounds on the pavement here. have you ever seen anything like this before?

>> no, i am here from a country that the police shoot 10 times a year. it is peaceful. i am a former police officer in denmark >> did you see the individuals shooting at each other? >> no, i saw arms with guns sticking out the windows. >> i spoke with san francisco resident who was enjoying pier 39 with her cousins who just landed today from new jersey. this is their first time visiting san francisco. they told me they heard about a dozen gunshots and they described the scene as completely chaotic and traumatic. they also ran and took cover behind nearby bushes. >> we heard what sounded to us like, you know, thought fireworks or your car, but obviously gunshots. i am -- we did not realize we were in trouble until three cars started backing up at full

speed without looking and maybe like the medium of the roads. >> that is when i saw like a white like four door sedan driving, like away from the scene. and all, like, the driver's window was up and then the driver's side backseat window was down and there was a shooter like hanging out the window with his gun pointed towards the people at the pier. >> the witnesses said they were still shaking hours after witnessing these shootings so that is why you did not see their faces for privacy reasons the san francisco resident told me that before they got to pier 39 she told her cousins this is a very safe part of the city. there are families, tourists, which they did see. they had no idea they would be caught in the middle of all of this >> gotten off of the plane from

new jersey, came to san francisco and bullets flying by >> yes. one of the cousins said she heard what sounded like a bullet whizzing by her head. they were hiding behind bushes with other families, other people. at one point they were thinking they might have to jump into the ocean to take cover because they were fully exposed. >> wow. when is it going to end. that is crazy. betty, thank you. these shootings already add to a violent weekend across the country. in chicago one person died and 20 people were shot at a juneteenth celebration. it happened right around midnight. no word on a motive, the police say they don't even know how many shooters were involved. >> in st. louis, the police say weekend. all teenagers. ranging in age from 15-19. 17-year-old was killed in that shooting. the police say the suspect has been arrested. in washington state two people died after the police

say a suspect randomly shot into a campground. this was outside of a music festival two hours southeast of seattle. at least three others were injured and the suspect there is in custody. >> according to the gun violence archive that categorizes mass shootings there have been 310 of them so far this year. last year, 647 for the entire year. >> now, san jose, a small brush fire broke out this afternoon. the fire started burning around 4:30 at the lake by raging waters. san jose fire department says it was only an acre and did not threaten any buildings. so far, no report on what caused the fire. >> the fire broke out on friday, now more than 90% contained. all of the road closures there have been lifted. >>. . a fire still smoldering days after it first started. the managers here at the public storage facility on blossom hill road says the tenants will

not be able to get in until next week. the firefighters sprayed water from above to try to put out some of the hot spots. >> crews are being called by neighbors and passerbis that see smoke. and crews are rotating in to put out hot spots. we are advising the public to stay out of this area. this building has a lot of materials and, it begins to smolder and because there was a collapse of the roof and the construction there will be moldering spots for quite a bit of time. >> the fire began with a powerful blast, rattling walls and windows. fireworks were stored in one of the units and they kept going off for hours. the authorities say a person of interest was arrested so far the investigation is still ongoing. >> all right, in other news, president biden coming to the bay area tomorrow to get money to pay for his re-election bid >> he is expected to start his trip with fundraisers. >> and then on tuesday he will

go to marin county reception attended by governor newsom. president biden is scheduled to visit the nature reserve in palo alto. he is expected to announce a $600 million deal to combat the climate crisis. 42% of democrats do not think president biden should run for a second run. >> meantime, florida governor desantis is also making a visit to california tomorrow. he will be in sacramento for a fundraising brunch. that is the same city where he recently sent dozens of migrants on chartered flights. but it is trump leading in the gop polls still ahead. we take a further look into his legal troubles. as we head into the juneteenth holiday. we will meet a man who is creating artwork around his culture and community. and on this father's day we introduce you to a danville man reconnecting with the last piece of his family's history. and coming up in the first alert forecast. we will talk

morning and i see a 10% match with a gentleman in sweden. >> reporter: he turned out to be his cowsip. when he reached out to him he got a surprise. >> the first thing he said to me is i have been waiting for this call for 40 years. >> reporter: his birth father, a man confined to his nephew about a child he had given up for adoption. but there was something else. in 1980 he sent him an eight page letter describing all of his travels and adventures. >> after puerto rico i had a good job in new york. i resigned in 19 71 to support myself as a writer. it has not worked out yet. it was like he was trying to explain his life to someone else. >> he was a writer, that is what he did. there may have been, you know, this sense that, that maybe this letter could find me at some point. so, which it did, of course. >> reporter: he is fascinated

with how many things he has in common with his biological father including a love of writing. children given up for adoption spend their lives searching for missing pieces to the puzzle of their lives. >> when you are adopted and you are searching for your birth parents, you actually are searching for yourself. who am i? more so than you are searching for them. >> reporter: they are used to connecting long lost relatives but nothing like this. >> that cousin in sweden, sitting with a letter, handwritten letter from the guy's father. you know, just waiting to be found. mind boggles. how many other people out there might be holding on to items that they are sort of waiting to be found, hoping to be contacted. >> he died in 2002, never having met the son who has been thinking about him since he was 5 years old. >> the life lesson for me is don't put things off. you know, whatever it is, do not

pick out more. a plane going by fast. not a ufo. a time lapse. everything seems to be going really fast. >> those are len tick lar lenticular clouds. downwind of those waves you get the lenticular clouds. they look weird. they are a good tool to use. when you see them you know the winds are moving fast up there. and usually you are going to feel that wind the next day. we felt it today. we will feel it again tomorrow. watch what happens. screens going to light up. that is tomorrow in the late afternoon. once again, wind gusts near 40 miles an hour tomorrow out along the coast. and 25-30 for just about everybody else. here is the takeaway. how windy was it for your part of the day today? tomorrow, almost identical. might be a little lighter. it will be pretty close. so, it is another breezy

day. no wind advisory, did not today. no reports of downed trees from this. certainly windy. not fun for allergy sufferers. we are going to feel the cool air. we kind of started the cool down a little bit today. tomorrow, now, colder, it will rush in on this. it will not be frigid. just below average. what you saw there, most places, inland, lower 70s tomorrow. you will see that in the seven-day forecast again if you did not see that. this is why we are doing this. you don't see it on the regular satellite. water vapor shows it. you see the trough there. coming down from the gulf of alaska. see when you visualizet. it is all coming down or way. this is, the atmosphere has been doing this for the last six weeks, keeps throwing the areas of low pressure. in this case this one is making it a bit windy with a

colfront with it. the real theme is, staying below average for much of this late spring and now early summer. here is how we know we are going to keep doing that. let's watch it one more way. the trough, instead of looking at the cold air. want to show you where the energy is. deeper reds, that is where you will form more areas of low pressure. i will play it forward. all of the way to the end of the month. tomorrow's area of low pressure. watch what happens, another one, next week, next friday, more of them filter through. there is more and we kind of stay in this pattern. that is the end of the june, still area of pressure. my point is, for the last six weeks the atmosphere has had areas of low pressure in california. it is not winter it is not like we are getting storms out of them. we are staying cool. and not only do we do it for the next seven-days we are staying right here. but, when we look at the longer range, all of the way out to the end of the month, we are probably going to keep
