weekend across america. multiple people are dead and dozens more injured after a string of mass shootings. they include a juneteenth celebration outside chicago, a nightclub in georgia, and a music festival in washington state. jarred hill is in new york tracking the latest developments for us. good morning. >> reporter: there were at least 16 mass shootings over the weekend according to the gun violence archive. as you mentioned, there were a lot happening at places where people were trying to celebrate juneteenth, father's day, good music. some of the victims here children. a father's day celebration turned deadly on chicago's south side yesterday evening. at least two people were killed, three others injured after witnesses say someone drove by a park and started shooting. [ sirens ] that came hours after another deadly mass shooting early sunday about 30 minutes away in willowbrook, illinois. that one during a juneteenth celebration. >> the motive is unclear. this is still an active

investigation. >> reporter: five people were injured during a shooting at another juneteenth celebration outside of a lounge in dekalb county near atlanta. while in washington state, police said a gunman randomly fired into a crowd at a music festival happening at a campground killing two and injuring three others. >> my heart was racing. i mean, i was just scared. >> reporter: the city of st. louis is reeling after one teenager was killed and nine more injured in a shooting at a party saturday night. >> the violence these children experienced last night is intolerable and unacceptable. >> reporter: at a safe communities event last week, president biden spoke about the need to do more to stop gun violence. >> prayers are fine, they're important, it doesn't happen again. but it is not going to stop it. we have to take action. have to move. have to do something. >> reporter: heartbreakingly, according to the u.s. gun violence archive, more than 800 children and teenagers have been shot to death in the u.s. so far this year.

800 just this year. now last week the cdc put out a study showing that homicide and suicides are now the leading cause of death for americans 10 to 24 years old. and anne-marie, experts say that access to guns is a big part of why those numbers have spiked. >> such a shame. thank you. breaking overnight, the state department announced that secretary of state antony blinken will meet with china's president today in beijing. tensions between the u.s. and china have reached an all-time high. blinken arrived in china's capital yesterday to kick off two days of diplomatic talks. the goal -- to cool exploding tensions that have set many leaders around the globe on edge. margaret brennan is traveling with the secretary in beijing. >> reporter: after more than 5.5 hours of intense and very direct talks between secretary blinken and his chinese counterpart, there was at least one point of agreement -- try to stop the downward spiral in this

relationship before the two countries veer into conflict. secretary blinken and the foreign minister, a close ally of president xi jinping, tackled a long list of grievances. the u.s. goal -- open communication channels to avoid a military clash. tensions spiked last summer when then-house speaker nancy pelosi visited taiwan and again in february after the spy balloon shoot-down. china's defense chief refuses to speak with u.s. defense secretary lloyd austin at a time when beijing is massively expanding its nuclear arsenal. miscommunication risks a clash. last month a chinese warship came within 150 feet of slamming into an american ship transiting the taiwan strait. in the south china sea, a chinese fighter jet buzzed the u.s. air force. the divide runs deeper than a failure to communicate.

blinken also pressed authorities to crack down on the flow of fentanyl. that drug is now the number-one killer of americans under the age of 50. many of the precursor chemicals are made in china, and the biden administration wants to slow that down. for beijing, there may be financial interests here. the economy is slowing down, and reopening some of that trade may be helpful to them. the main goal may be a summit between president xi and president biden this fall, perhaps as soon as november in california. >> margaret brennan, thank you. president biden today is traveling to northern california where he'll be hitting the campaign trail. he's set to announce a more than $600 million investment to combat climate change and also attend a few fundraisers. mr. biden kicked off his first re-election campaign rally on saturday. he met with union workers in philadelphia after a rollout of union endorsements. meantime, republican presidential hopefuls including

chris christie and former vice president mike pence hit the tv circuit. each of them criticized donald trump about the federal charges he's facing in a case alleging a mishandling of classified documents. >> to see a former president of the united states be subject to an indictment by the administration of the current president, that sends a terrible message to the wider world. >> recent cbs news polling still shows trump well ahead of a growing list of gop candidates. the collapsed stretch of i-95 in philadelphia is set to reopen within two weeks. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro made the announcement over the weekend. he joined president biden on an aerial tour over the critical section of the highway closed to the east coast traffic since last sunday. that's when an oil tanker caught fire causing an overpass to collapse. shapiro said crews are working around the clock to ensure everything stays on schedule.

>> these are special people working their tails off, and mr. president, they are working 24/7, literally around the clock. >> repairs to the damaged highway were initially expected to take months. the federal government released $3 million in emergency funds to help with the cost of rebuilding. more rounds of extreme storms are expected to slam the south through today. severe thunderstorms hammered mobile, alabama, over the weekend. torrential rain caused local flooding, and there were reports that storm debris temporarily closed a highway. rain also slammed edmond, oklahoma. the city was under a severe storm warning and was at risk of winds of up to 70 miles per hour. and recovery efforts are under way in tulsa after storms caused miles of destruction. officials urged residents to stay home and off the roads. at the height of the storms, nearly 300,000 customers across oklahoma were left without power.

american golfer wyndham clark took home his first major s.n in los angeles. the 29-year-old held off rory mcilroy as he tapped in for a par on the 18th hole. clark finished the tournament at ten under. mcilroy birdied the first hole yesterday, but it was his only one of the day. he hasn't won a major since 2014. clark won his first pga tournament just six weeks ago. today the nation is observing juneteenth. the federal holiday commemorates the end of slavery in the united states. president biden signed a law in 2021 to make juneteenth a federal holiday. over the weekend many places across the country celebrated including d.c. that's where tourists gathered at the national museum of african american history and culture. >> today is so important for us to think about the roots of our country as we talk a lot about liberation and treatment.

and there's an update on a man who died at the grand canyon. those are some of the headlines he "moing nestand." "u today" reports crews recovered the body of a man who fell off the grand canyon's skywalk. authorities say he fell to his death two weeks ago while walking across the viewing platform. the horseshoe-shaped skywalk extends over the canyon 4,000 feet above the colorado river. officials have not released the man's identity, but they say he's 33 years old. an investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fall. "reuters" says the u.s. is sending satellite data to canada to help detect wildfires. the department of defense began sending real-time sensor information on friday to identify new wildfires quicker. the u.s. has sent more than 600 firefighters to help canada battle one of its most destructive early wildfire seasons. last week canadian prime minister justin trudeau expressed gratitude for the international assistance.

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ some people got a unique look at egypt's great pyramids in giza. these paragliders enjoyed a bird's eye view as they flew 600 feet above the ancient wonder. the event was put together by sky one, the company specializes in paramotor sports. its goal is to lure tourists for a glimpse of egypt like they've never seen before. microsoft says it was the target of a cyberattack, and the upcoming blockbuster season looks icy. matt pieper has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stock markets will be closed in observance of juneteenth today. as for friday, wall street closed out its best week since

march, but stocks drifted to modest losses. the dow last 108, nasdaq down 93, s&p 500 losing 16 points. microsoft says, yep, we were hacked. earlier this month sporadic but serious service disruptions hit its outlook email, and onedrive apps as well as its cloud computing platform. microsoft says the group that calls itself anonymous sudan was behind the attacks. while it's not saying how many customers were affected, it says there's no evidence that any customer data was accessed or compromised. and you thought the supply chain was just getting back into the swing of things. a strike by u.p.s. workers could up-end that. members of the teamsters union which represents about 340,000 workers at the package delivery company have voted overwhelmingly to strike if no agreement is reached by july 31st. they're looking for a pay bump and more full-time jobs. if a strike does come, it would be the largest against the single employer in america's history. and at the box office, the upcoming summer blockbuster season looks to be more like a
