breaking now, new developments and possible hope in the desperate search to find a missing submersible with five people on board. overnight the u.s. coast guard confirming canadian authorities detected underwater noises, but time is limited. the vessel could only have about a day's worth of oxygen left. jarred hill has the breaking details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the coast guard has not confirmed what type of noises were heard, but when crews went and searched the area nothing turned up. as teams race to save the five people on board, we're learning about allegations suggesting there were multiple warnings about that submersible's safety. the u.s. coast guard says underwater notices noise -- noises have been detected in the search area as researchers race to find the submersible that disappeared sunday while exploring the wreckage of the "titanic." >> our crews are working around the clock to ensure that we are doing everything possible to locate the titan and the five crew members. >> reporter: authorities say the

ocean gate vessel dubbed "titan" had enough oxygen to last around 96 hours when it left. now after more than two days, that supply is dwindling. a military vessel able to dive 6,000 meters joined the search, but experts say spotting the "titan" won't be easi. >> there are not efficient ways to survey the sea floor and find it. >> reporter: this isn't the first time ocean gate has made the trip. cbs news is learning that in 2018 a group of leaders in the submersible industry sent the company a letter warning of possible catastrophic problems with its submersible and a planned mission to the "titanic" wreckage. show runner and podcaster mike reiss took the "titan" to the site almost a year ago. >> before you get on you sign this long, long waiver that mentions possible death three times on the first page. >> reporter: on board this mission, british adventurer hamish harding, pakistani british businessman shahzada dawood, and his 19-year-old son

suleman. paul henri nargeolet, a former diver with the french navy, and oceangate ceo stockton rush. they've defended the "titan" saying it was capable of diving to the depths of the "titanic." meanwhile, for context on how big this search is, teams are combing through an area that is larger than the state of connecticut. >> it is incredible. they need all the help they can get. jarred hill in new york. thank you. to our other top story this morning now. house republicans are vowing to push ahead with their investigation into hunter biden. the action comes after the president's son reached a plea deal with federal prosecutors on tax and gun charges. house oversight chair james comer called it a sweetheart deal and says it will have no impact on his committee's probe. catherine herridge reports from washington. >> reporter: as part of the hunter biden plea agreement three charges were filed in a delaware court.

two misdemeanor counts of willful failure to pay federal income tax on annual earnings in excess of $1.5 million. a third count, possession of a handgun by a drug user, would be dismissed if biden remains drug-free and commits no additional crimes during a specified time period. a source familiar with the terms said biden's legal team expects probation, not jail time, though final approval rests with the judge. >> i think the judge is going to do what's fair, and i think what's fair is, you know, my client gets on with his life. >> reporter: david weiss, the u.s. attorney in delaware who led the probe, was appointed by then-president trump and left in place by the biden administration. in a statement, he said the investigation is ongoing, but hunter biden's team sees it differently. >> my understanding is that we're done. >> reporter: traveling in california, president biden was asked about the news. >> i'm very proud of my son. >> reporter: hunter biden spoke about the federal investigation on "cbs sunday morning."

>> i'm cooperating completely, and i'm absolutely certain, 100% certain, that at the end of the investigation that i will be cleared. >> reporter: while democrats hailed the agreement as a sign of the justice department's independence, republicans cried foul. former president donald trump, arraigned on criminal charges last week, said hunter biden was given a mere traffic ticket. >> you think this is another example of a two-tier system was justice in america. >> reporter: republican congressman james comer leads the house oversight committee which is investigating the biden family's foreign business dealings, a probe disputed by the white house. will you call the u.s. attorney in delaware to testify? >> i would expect the u.s. attorney to testify in front of the house of representatives very soon. he needs to explain whether or not his investigation is concluded. >> reporter: gene rossi, a former justice department official who handled tax cases, told cbs news the failure to pay tax on more than $3 million even

though now repaid is a serious violation. >> if this were hunter smith instead of hunter biden, i think you would have a very much more aggressive prosecution. >> reporter: the delaware court has not set a date for hunter biden's surrender, but a source familiar with the deal told cbs news it could happen in a matter of days. hunter himself has not commented. catherine herridge, cbs news, washington. right now at least 100,000 customers in oklahoma are in the dark after severe storms slammed the region. crews are working around the clock to restore power. the extreme weather over the weekend tore down trees and power lines. the state is now dealing with an intense heat wave, as well. drivers waited in long lines to get gas for their generators and to keep cool in their cars. it's the same story in texas where people in the town of marshall gathered at this church to cool off. >> this has hit us pretty hard for us to be such a small town.

i mean, it's -- it's made me cry quite a bit. >> you feel the cold air? this is a godsend. >> sadly a line worker helping to restore power in east texas diedn . statofficials believ's heat related. utility companies are also asking customers to voluntarily conserve power. the damaged portion of i-95 in philadelphia is set to reopen this weekend which is ahead of schedule. pennsylvania governor josh shapiro says temporary lanes will allow traffic to start moving again with permanent repairs to follow. the overpass on the heavily traveled highway collapsed ten days ago after an oil tanker flipped over and caught fire. it was initially expected to take months to reopen the highway. and the driver accused in a crash that killed five minnesota women is now booked in jail. police confirmed derrick john thompson has been arrested. the 27-year-old is the son of former state representative john thompson.

the suspect is accused of going about 100 miles per hour before exiting the highway and smashing into another car on friday night. all five women inside the vehicle died. >> it's been really very hard, hard few days so far. especially when it comes to our community, we're very close. you know, a lot of our families, everybody knew these beautiful daughters. >> police say the suspect has been twice -- rather convicted twice in minnesota of fleeing police. a utah woman accused of killing her husband and then writing a book about grief is stew -- is, rather, suing his estate. that's according to a new court filing. 33-year-old kouri richins is accused of slipping fentanyl into a cocktail she made for her husband last year. 39-year-old eric richins was found dead at the foot of the couple's bed. she is seeking millions in proceeds from their home and his business. overseas now, the u.s. is

talks between the two countries are at an advanced stage citing u.s. intelligence reports. secretary of state antony blinken says the u.s. would have deep concerns about chinese military activities in cuba. he said that he made those concerns clear when he met with chinese officials in beijing this week. earlier this month the white house acknowledged the existence of a chinese spy station in cuba. social media personality andrew tate is speaking out about the charges against him. and a deadly fire in new york city is under investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports four people were killed in a fire at a manhattan e-bike repair shop that officials say was caused by lithium ion batteries. two men and two women living in an apartment above the store died yesterday when the fire quickly spread. two people were hospitalized in critical condition. fined $1,600 last year for battery charging safety violations.

"npr" says social media personality andrew tate was indicted on human trafficking and rape charges in romania. prosecutors there also filed charges against tate's brother and two romanian women. they're accused of forming a criminal gang to exploit women in romania and the u.s. as well as britain. earlier this year, tate, who is known for his misogynistic views, maintained his innocence. >> i truly believe that justice will be served in the end. there is 0% chance of me being found guilty of something i have not done. i maintain my absolute innocence, and i think most people understand this. and i look forward to being home. >> prosecutors say seven women were misled and taken to romania where they were sexually exploited and subjected to physical violence. and "the washington post" says a federal judge struck down arkansas's ban on gender-affirming care for minors. the judge ruled the nation's first ban on medical treatment for transitioning young people was unconstitutional.

those same tickets used to sell for just over $20. america's largest newspaper publisher is suing google, and you can now order delivery from domino's without an address. shanelle kaul has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks fell tuesday as investors await this week's congressional testimony from federal reserve chair jerome powell. the dow lost 245 points. the nasdaq was down by 22, and the s&p 500 lost 20 points. america's biggest newspaper publisher is suing google. gannett which owns more than 200 publications including "usa today" claims the tech giant holds a monopoly over the online ad market. the suit was filed in new york and seeks unspecified damages. according to e-marketer google controls about a quarter of america's digital ad market. the number of single-family homes being built in this country surged in may by the most in about three decades.

it included countless roles in tv, film, and broadway. paxton whitehead was 85 years old. actor jonathan majors made his first court appearance in new york in his assault case. the "creed 3" star found out his trial date has been set for august 3rd. majors is accused of assaulting a 30-year-old woman in march. police said that she suffered minor injuries to her head and neck. majors could spend up to a year behind bars if he's found guilty. his lawyers deny the allegations. and a contestant on the "price is right" got a little too excited after winning a trip to hawaii. he cheered a little too hard.
