tornado outbreak slams parts of texas flattening entire neighborhoods. the city hardest hit. dramatic rescue. police rush to save a woman kidnapped at gunpoint in california. how her 12-year-old son helped save her life. good morning, and good to be with you want i'm anne-marie green. breaking now, as search crews in the north atlantic race to find a missing submersible with five people on board, the oxygen supply could be close to running out. the vessel on a trip to view the sunken wreckage of the "titanic" disappeared sunday morning with an estimated four-day supply of oxygen. jarred hill has the breaking details. good morning. >> reporter: this already frantic search is in a new phase of desperation. the "titan" set off as you mentioned around 6:00 sunday morning, east coast time, with about four days of oxygen, leaving rescuers now with a tiny window to bring this vessel and the crew to safety if they can

find it. the u.s. coast guard says the search area for a submersible missing in the north atlantic has expanded to twice the size of connecticut. it's all in a race to find and save the five people on board. >> there have been multiple reports of noises, and every one of those noises is being analyzed, tracked, looked for patterns, and reported upon. >> reporter: officials say it's unclear whether those noises are coming from the "titan," nature, even the wreckage of the "titanic" itself. experts note at 2.5 miles deep into the ocean, getting the "titan" to the surface won't be easy. >> picking out a submersible amongst the piles of whatever that are down there, iron and other parts of the ship, is going to be very difficult. >> reporter: red flags about safety started emerging years before the disappearance. in 2018 industry experts sent oceangate a letter bringing up concerns about the vessel. engineer bart kemper was one of the people who signed it.

>> this is a one-off experimental that is -- follows no code and follows no jurisdiction. they're self-certifying. it does not mean it's inherently wrong, it means there's more uncertainty. >> reporter: cbs news has also learned this a couple from florida sued oceangate's ceo in february after they struggled to get their deposits refunded for multiple canceled trips. according to court documents published by fort myers' "the news-press," one trip was canceled because of, quote, equipment failure. at least 46 people have successfully taken the oceangate submersible to the "titanic" since 2021 and 2022 according to letters that the company filed with the u.s. district in virginia. on the search, the navy has brought in a specialized salvage system that can hoist large and bulky, heavy undersea objects. the question is will they find this thing. >> exactly. you got to find them first. thank you very much.

so also breaking now, search and rescue operations are under way after tornadoes ripped through parts of northern texas. the mayor of the small town of matador told "the new york times" at least three people were killed there, and others may be injured. some may be still trapped in the wreckage. video shows widespread damage throughout the town. atat least -- atat one point m than 300,0,000 customersrs lost power throughout the state. and at least 31 people are dead after a blast at a barbecue restaurant in china. it happened last night in the city of yinchuan. authorities say seven people were being treated for burns and cuts from broken glass. officials suspect the explosion was caused by a leaking petroleum gas tank. an investigation is under way. in a rare move, the house voted along party lines to censure california democratic representative adam schiff. republicans say schiff abused his trust when he made comments several years ago about evidece of collusion between donald trump's presidential campaign

and russia. schiff, who is running for the senate, has been one of the most outspoken critics of trump in congress. he called the censure a badge of honor. china is condemning president biden's remarks comparing chinese leader xi jinping to a dictator. mr. biden made the comment during a campaign fundraiser tuesday in california. he said xi was angry when a chinese surveillance balloon was shot down over the u.s. in february. china's foreign ministry called the president's comments absurd and irresponsible. it comes after secretary of state antony blinken met about xi in beijing this week to try and repair relations between the two countries. >> the president believes that diplomacy including this recent trip undertaken by the secretary is a responsible way to manage tensions, clear up misperceptions, avoid miscalculations. >> russia also criticized mr. biden's comments about china. attorney general merrick

garland is defending the justice department's handling of the case against president biden's son, hunter. republican lawmakers say the proposed plea deal between federal prosecutors and hunter biden over tax and gun charges is a slap on the wrist compared to criminal charges against former president trump. garland said the u.s. attorney investigating hunter biden was appointed by trump. >> from the moment of my appointment as attorney general, i would leave this matter in the hands of the united states attorney who was appointed by the previous president and assigned to this matter by the previous administration. >> hunter biden is set to appear before a federal judge next month in connection with the plea deal that will likely keep him out of prison. and this morning the senate is considering a new ethics bill after allegations against justice samuel alito. "propublica" reported that he had gone on an undisclosed fishing trip in 2008 funded by a

republican mega donor. it included free travel on a private jet chartered by hedge fund billionaire paul singer. it cost $100,000 each way, plus lodging at a $1,000-a-night resort covered by then-conservative donor robin arkley. alito never disclosed the trip as required on court disclosure forms, and he also didn't recuse himself from cases involving singer. >> the connection between supreme court justices and right-wing billionaires is a very legitimate matter of concern. >> in an op-ed published tuesday, alito said that he was not aware singer had an interest in any party. the search is under way in paris after a major explosion at a design school there. the blast yesterday sparked a fire that sent thick black smoke soaring over the city. people in nearby buildings were forced to evacuate. more than two dozen people were hurt.

police say they're investigating whether a gas leak caused the explosion. imtiaz tyab reports. >> reporter: in heart of paris, a blazing inferno after a suspected gas leak triggered a massive explososion at the p pa amererican academymy, a private fashion and design college with international students including americans. more than 30 people were injured, four critically. "i saw a gigantic fireball 100 feet high. i was shaken, my ears are still ringing." a massive search is under way as rescue workers dig through the wreckage looking for survivors. "i'm extremely cautious about saying what caused the explosion that sparked this fire," says paris' police chief, "but we have deployed 270 firefighters, 70 vehicles, and the fire is currently contained." the blast happened near the left -- near the latin quarter known for student

sunday, pistol whipped one of her children, forced her into a vehicle, and then drove away. deputies arrested the suspect when the car stopped at construction barricades. the woman and her child suffered minor injuries. there was a clash on capitol hill over the russia probe of donald trump, and there are new dna details in the idaho murders case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "new york post" reports dna from a cheek swab links accused killer bryan kohberger to the murders last year of four university of idaho students. according to a new court filing, the dna is a statistical match to dna found on a knife sheath found next to two of the victims' bodies. investigators say the dna is at least five octillion times more likely to be kohberger's than a random person. kohberger has been indicted on four counts of first-degree murder. last month a judge entered a not guilty plea on his behalf.

the "associated press" says the special counsel who investigated the fbi's probe into alleged ties between russia and donald trump's 2016 presidential campaign testified before congress. john durham appeared before the house judiciary committee yesterday to discuss his findings. he was appointed by trump attorney general william barr to look into the origins of the russia investigation. durham said the fbi acted too quickly when it launched its investigation. republicans contend there's an anti-trump bias within the justice department. >> has any evidence of collusion between the trump campaign and russia ever been uncovered? >> i mean, there was information obviously in the report that was prepared by director mueller. but as to collusion or conspiracy, i'm not aware of any. >> democrats criticized durham's investigation of the fbi saying it produced only one guilty plea and lost the only two cases that went to trial.

for the first time the u.s. agriculture department approved the sale of lab-grown chicken meat. the meat can now be sold as sell cultivated or cultured meat that comes from a lab and not a slaughtered animal. the chicken cells are grown in steel tanks and then formed into nuggets, cutlets, and sausages. cultivated chicken is more expensive than meat from birds, of course, so it may take a while before it goes mainstream. the federal reserve chair is on the hot seat in washington and the state where you need to shell out big bucks for gas. >> reporter: stocks dipped midweek in response to jerome powell's testimony in congress. the dow lost 102 points. the nasdaq was down by 165, and the s&p 500 lost 23 points. on wednesday, central bank chairman jerome powell told lawmakers interest rates are

likely to rise again in the coming months. rates will hold steady this month, he says, but the quest to lower inflation back to its target 2% has, quote, a long way to go. economists broadly expect we'll see the next and potentially final rate hike of the year in july. a new lawsuit claims amazon tricked people into paying for prime. the federal trade commission alleges the e-commerce giant tricked and trapped people by confusing customers into signing up and then making it difficult for them to cancel. an amazon spokesperson called the ftc's claims false on the facts and the law. and washington state now hold an unwanted title -- drivers there now face the most expensive gas prices in the country. according to aaa, the average cost of regular gas in washington state has jumped by 32 cents in past month to $4.93 a gallon. at that is seven cents more than the average price in california, a state notorious for high gas
