south. the devastating aftermath. closed for business. a mexico hotel temporarily shuts down after a california couple is found dead in their room. the latest details ahead. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are learning more about the doomed submersible that vanished in the north atlantic. the coast guard confirming yesterday all five people on board are dead. officials said it suffered a catastrophic implosion while on a trip to view the sunken wreckage of the "titanic." the news came after crews found debris from the vessel. jarred hill is tracking the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: not the outcome that anybody was hoping for in this situation. this morning we're learning that there may have been a sign days ago, in fact, that something happened near where the "titan" wreckage was found. now as the families are mourning, the focus is shifting to figuring out how and exactly when this happened.

a grim discovery ended the frantic multi-day search for the missing submersible "titan" yesterday. a remote operated vehicle found debris on the ocean floor of the north atlantic just 1,600 feet from the wreckage of the "titanic." >> the debris is consistent with a catastrophic implosion of the vessel. >> reporter: a naval official told cbs news the navy detected a noise consistent with an implosion shortly after the "titan" first lost contact on sunday. all five people on board are presumed dead. it's not clear if their bodies will be recovered. >> i had been holding out hope as much as possible. >> reporter: friends of french explorer paul-henri nargeolet say he was a consummate professional and generous. >> i think we would like to be remembered as somebody who continued the story of "titanic." >> reporter: oceangate, the company that operates the "titan," released a statement saying, "our hearts are with these five souls and every member of their families during this tragic time."

for years, industry experts have criticized the company, which charges $250,000 for its expeditions to the "titanic" site, over safety concerns. >> they cut corners. they usesed unproven e experime technology on a sub that took passengers. and to me that's inexcusable. >> reporter: an investigation is under way to understand what happened and the cause of the implosion. now it's not really clear right now which agency or even country will lead the investigation long term. the coast guard has noted that this part in particular is pretty complex because of where this happened -- in remote waters involving people from many different countries. and those banging sounds that had been picked up tuesday and wednesday, well the coast guard says that those were from other ships in the area. >> all right. thank you very much. well, now to the extreme weather battering the nation. a tornado ripped through highlands ranch, colorado, last night damaging homes and uprooting trees.

massive hail also pummelled this denver suburb as another round of severe thunderstorms slammed the state. in oklahoma, torrential rain soaked the town of sayre. another round of storms could impact the morning commute. and drivers are being warned of flash floods. recovery efforts continue in texas. a tornado outbreak ravaged parts of the state overnight wednesday. the town of matador was hit the hardest. neighborhoods were leveled, and at least four people died. >> it's not only physical damage but the economical and emotional impact that it will will have on this town is very significant. >> the heat wave also continuing in texas, smashing records. right now about 60,000 customers are without power. the united states and india are hailing a new era in their relationship. president biden welcomed india's prime minister to the white house yesterday for a controversial state visit. the indian leader once banned from entering america was in d.c. for talks and a state dinner last night.

with the investigation into president biden's son, hunter. the whistleblowers told congress that irs investigators recommended charging hunter biden with felonies including tax evasion as well as misdemeanors. the president's son reached a deal this week with federal prosecutors to plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and avoid prosecution on a separate gun charge. the justice department denied the allegations. a legislative office building in nashville is back open after a temporary lockdown of the authorities shut down the building yesterday. they say several republican lawmakers received threatening letters containing, quote, an unknown white powder in the mail. authorities with the fbi and department of security rushed to the scene. one resident said he was alarmed. >> i figured it's pretty serious because of that vehicle right over there on the other side of the fire truck. it don't just roll out all the time. >> the fbi confirmed there was no indication of a risk to public safety but said lab testing of the substance is

ongoing. and the burning of hazardous materials after a massive train derailment in east palestine, ohio, may not have been necessary. that's what witnesses said yesterday as the ntsb kicked off a two-day investigation -- investigative hearing into the incident. experts who gathered on the scene in february ignited a chemical being hauled by the train to avoid a catastrophic explosion. data presented at the hearing reveals that might have been unwarranted since a blast was apparently not imminent. officials asked why it took first responders so long to identify the chemicals. >> small departments like ours and most volunteers departments in this country, i go back to my manpower statement of we need help getting manpower and staffing. >> lots of people in east palestine reported getting sick after the chemicals leaked into

the the luxury resort in mexico where a california couple was found dead has temporarily closed. the bodies of abby lutz and john heathco were discovered in their room last week at the hyatt rancho pescadero hotel near cabo san lucas. lutz's family suspects they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. local police initially said gas inhalation was suspected. an investigation is under way to determine what killed the couple. a new charge is filed in connection with the deadly shooting on the set of the movie "rust," and an appeal by a american journalist jailed in russia is denied. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports a russian court upheld the detention of "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich until at least late august. the 31-year-old u.s. citizen was arrested in march on espionage charges. the u.s. government and the e "jouournal" is d denied the cha. the white house says gershkovich is being wrongfully detained and

has demanded his immediate release. gershkovich has been based in russia for nearly six years.
