this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> pride weekend is here, san francisco getting ready to welcome people from all over in a huge celebration of inclusion. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook. we have more on the start of pride celebrations in a moment, let's get you caught up on the big stories today. san francisco police arrested an 18-year-old in a deadly shooting near a bart station, a man was shot near the powell street station around 8:00 last night. he died at the hospital. investigators think it was targeted. soon after, an officer spotted a man matching the suspect's description get into a taxi. they pulled over the cab a few blocks away and arrested daveon

crawford of sacramento. an update on the rolling gunbattle that happened along the embarcadero on sunday, the san francisco da has decided to discharge the case against the suspect, 33-year-old, lee haywood. but she says this remains an open and active investigation, haywood was in a black suv seen exchanging gunfire with a white sedan. at least four bystanders were hurt. the suv later crashed at embarcadero and howard. she said the office is working with police to make sure they gather all relevant evidence they need to evaluate the case and make appropriate charging decisions. san francisco police are preparing for pride weekend, the premier event not till sunday but other gatherings and celebrations are in full swing. let's get over to anne makovec

with all the details. >> reporter: the transgender people congregating today, ahead of the 20th annual trans march, that is going to be getting started momentarily. organizers say it is all about raising their voices and standing in solidarity. pride celebrations in san francisco are huge events, thousands of people pouring into the city from across the bay area and around the world this weekend. the sf pd wants to make sure people can enjoy themselves and stay safe, so they are beefing up patrols, they are on high alert because of increased anti-lgbtq rhetoric around the country. >> this week is truly a celebratory time in the county of san francisco. pride weekend is one of our biggest, probably our biggest event and it is where we showcase the diversity that the city has to offer , and the fact that we really are a safe haven for the lgbtq community. >> at city hall, 250 couples kicked off pride weekend by tying the knot at a mass service, they received marriage licenses and pins,

this ceremony comes 10 years after california resumed same-sex marriages. >> this is symbolic, but it's also important for us to continue to support our lgbtq community. >> an effort is underway to get same-sex marriage enshrined in the state constitution. and celebrations are continuing all weekend with a festival at the civic center tomorrow and a big parade on sunday. the colorful kickoff to pride weekend in san francisco will light up the sky tonight, nancy pelosi will flip the switch for the grand lighting display . but, now a battle is brewing between its creators and an artist who insisted they copied her work. here's a shot at each of the works side by side. we spoke to both parties about the fight that could end up in court. >> reporter: to some, this might look like simple beams of colorful light, but for the

artist, it is her signature work, inspired by a real-life rainbow she saw dancing across the pond in massachusetts. and spurred to life later by barack obama. >> i relate to it very much because i'm mixed race like obama and i think a lot of people of color were just jubilant to finally see something like this. >> reporter: titled global rainbow, it was first displayed in 2009, projecting across downtown manhattan on martin luther king day. >> i just wanted to do a work that had nothing to do with division, i wanted to do a work that had everything to do with inclusion and togetherness. >> reporter: she took her work all over the world, touting it as a symbol of diversity. in 2022, somebody told her about a laser light display in san francisco, a miles long beam of rainbow colored lasers . >> i was very upset , you know,

because i was like, this is my work. what is going on? and honestly, it had always been a dream of mine to present my global rainbow in san francisco. so, it was kind of a double whammy. >> reporter: it was presented by illuminate, the nonprofit behind the massive l.e.d. light sculpture that once sparkled along the san francisco bay bridge. she reached out to the founder, adamant that they credit her for the pride display which she says she has copyright four. >> she is wrong, i know the truth, you will see hundreds of photos from across the city that have a power potency, and context of san francisco that is just not close to anything she has ever done. >> reporter: the founder insisted he has done nothing wrong and pointed to the website which listed them as an artist who came before us. she is sending letters, asking

illuminate to pull the project. >> i was like, no, i'm not a historical contributor, this is my work. >> i think many works can be considered similar, but does someone own the rights to take a laser beam and say that is mine and nobody else in the world can do it? i don't think so. >> reporter: ideas are not protected under the law, but to the way an artist expresses them can be. >> it is discerning the difference between again, the idea , anybody should be able to do a projecting rainbow colors in the sky with lasers, and what is actually something beyond that , that is her original expression , that is something that the artist has created that goes beyond that idea. >> if he does not credit me as the artist, of this work, i will take him to court. because i will not accept this. i just

won't. >> illuminate is set to debut tonight on the embarcadero, they note this year's display should have double the amount of lasers as last year's. if you are heading to the pride parade on sunday, expect a lot of company. transit agencies are reminding folks to get on board to avoid traffic on the roads, and service downtown will have some major reroutes. bart is expecting its peak travel time on sunday, from about 10:00 through 2:00, getting into downtown san francisco and from 4:00 through 8:00 p.m., that is getting out of town. and the san francisco bay ferry is also anticipating high ridership for the parade . be sure to catch our special, hope, love, pride , a celebration this sunday from 10:00 through noon, it will be

the warriors have officially introduced their latest draft picks at chase center and one of them isn't a stranger to the bay area, they chose brandon, the guard out of santa clara, it was the second straight year a bronco was traded in the first round. at santa clara, the average is 20 points per game on his way to being named the west coast conference player of the year. and the warriors also decided to make a trade both before the end of the round, they moved forward and took trace jackson davis from the indiana hoosiers , and they are ready to get to

work. >> he has been a sponge, he is able to absorb all the knowledge, and me and him like to both pass the ball, and we are very unselfish players, so i think it's going to be a great fit for both of us. >> i think a basketball player should know how to pass, dribble, and shoot, and i think i'm a pretty smart basketball player , and the warriors have a lot of smart basketball players as well. >> history was made as bay area twin brothers were top-five of the same draft, they were selected number four and number five overall. he will be heading to houston to play with the rockets while his brother will go to the detroit pistons. they both grew up in san leandro before going to high school in florida.

this weekend will be a special one at the stern grove festival, nico case is colliding with the indigo girls. we spoke with nico about the importance of connecting with the fans. ♪ >> reporter: singer and songwriter, nico , is known for her sound that infuses rock folk and country. in her latest album, distinctly hers. >> ♪ >> i have never played stern grove before, but i have seen the photos and i'm like, that is amazing. so i'm very excited. it is great that we still have a festival, a local festival or a venue that is specific to early to your area.

>> reporter: this is a love of music and finding that joy in connection with her audience. >> it's about 20% about the artist , and 80% about the communities that are there and their response. what kind of connections are they forming at the show? maybe it's the first show you take your little brother two, or maybe it's where you the meteor life partner. those are very much chapter heads of our lives. ♪ >> reporter: you will be co-headlining with the indigo girls, have you played shows together before? i know, i love them, too. >> yes, i have played shows with the indigo girls before, and their music is ridiculous, and then there is their connection with their audience . ♪

>> reporter: what can people expect musically, for your show here in the bay ? what do you plan on playing ? do you have some new stuff? >> well, it's a lot of stuff from our wild creatures release, half of the band is a part of the new band i'm in, so it's very -- we just cross over with each other. basically everybody there sings like a bird, so it's kind of like the release, it's going to be gross. >> [laughter] it's going to be awesome. >> a lot of talent on that stage, if you can't make it on sunday, we will be carrying

the show live on our sister station and streaming on the free cbs news app, it starts sunday at 2:00 p.m. so much going on this weekend, we have stern grove on sunday and the pride parade on sunday, and all these other events going on between now and then, it's going to be a huge weekend everywhere. >> and the festival in oakland, and the county fair is happening this weekend, a lot going on. let's take a look at what is happening out there today, we see the june gloom hanging out along the coast, and over parts of san francisco, basically the western half of the city is having a hard time getting out from underneath the cloud cover. areas of coastal dribble, plenty of low cloud cover and fog through the rest of tonight and not much of a change over the weekend, temperatures are going to be well below normal, that means pleasantly cool weather for spots along the bay. but a

warming trend kicks in next week and it might actually be hot as we head into early july, a week from tomorrow. hard to believe that is around the corner already. here is the long-range outlook, from the last two days of june into the first few days of july, significant chance of above normal temperatures away from the water . and it looks like that is a trend that will continue into the first week of july. things are going to rearrange themselves big picture wise. in the atmosphere, you just have to be patient and wait for it to happen. a lot of sunshine around san jose but temperatures on the cool side across the entire area. mid-sixties for san francisco and oakland, but only low 70s further inland, 10 to 15 degrees below average for late june. if you are heading out to the giants game this evening, the first place arizona diamondbacks , which is not a phrase i had on my bingo card,

the temperatures will gradually coast down into the upper 50s and there will be a noticeable breeze and of course the cloud cover will be spreading back in. it'll be widespread to begin the day tomorrow, a lot of gray across the region. we will back up towards the coast, it'll be another day where we see a mix of clouds and sunshine until you get to the coast, and it will be mostly cloudy there throughout the weekend. temperatures tonight dropping down to the low to mid 50s across the board. tomorrow, 10 to 15 degrees below normal for the inland parts of the bay area, low 70s in santa clara valley, low to mid 70s for most of the east bay, maybe upper 70s for fairfield. if you are heading out to the alameda county fair, pleasantly cool, temperatures in the low to mid 70s saturday, sunday, and again on monday. we will update the forecast later on, chapters are going to warm up next week, upper 60s in san francisco by

thursday and warmer temperatures inland, low to mid 80s in the north bay and the santa clara valley by thursday and friday of next week. the hot spots, no surprise, the east bay topping 90 degrees by thursday and friday and even along the coast, a heat wave for the last two days of june. i know somebody that is very excited about that, and her name is elizabeth. just contain yourself, it is six days away. >> bust out the jean jacket. thank you, paul. still ahead, getting the right fit , how a clothing brand is redesigning the basics

but just the way it fits me , it kind of makes me into a boxy shape that i like , and miraculously, the sleeves are not too long. >> about sweater came from the mind of finnegan shepherd. >> to wear clothing that doesn't fit is a kind of metaphysical, just not fitting at all. >> finnegan started a clothing company specifically designed for trends men and people who identify as non-binary, after he went through his own transitional surgery. >> so i was thinking, i'm able to go to a public pool and swim topless soon , and that is going to be so amazing, but even though i can be topless, i never had swim trunks that fit me, but i'm sure somebody will solve this problem by now. >> turns out, nobody had, so

finnegan did something about it, which is $5000 he and his business partner set out to make a collection of simple foundational clothing that is anything but basic. the t-shirts are cut to create a boxy fit, the pants are designed to conceal the curve of the hips, all the models are trans or non-binary. >> the whole point is invisibility, but the clothing is achieving the silhouette that aligns with the person's sense of gender identity and presentation and it is effortless and comfortable and that allows them to walk without yet another point of friction. >> people want to be valued for exactly who they are , tonight have to -- to not have to prove they are something else. >> for fashion, it is giving people a window into who you are on the inside.
