and parties will spill out onto city streets, there's also a feeling of resolve. a fighting spirit that the push to be seen and heard as equals needs to be stronger than ever. and to kick it all off, a grand display tha stretches nearly from one side of the city to the other. betty yu is downtown with more on the weekend activities. >> reporter: the crowd is still eagerly waiting for this full laser rainbow to light up marke street. once it comes on, it will be considered the world's largest pride flag. it was a vibrant celebration fit for ushering in the most colorful display of pride yet in the city. among the crowd, 12-year-old rowan. what does pride month mean to you? >> well, it's just a really fun way to celebrate who you are an show your colors. >> reporter: she said she identifies as bisexual. >> there's nothing to hide.

everyone is so welcoming now. like, there's nothing really to not be confident about unless people don't like that. >> reporter: the lights represent the love for all san francisco stands for. mayor breed carried the pride torch and helped light the display. >> you know, san francisco has been getting a bad rap lately. but for those of you who live here, those of you who walk the streets of san francisco, you can tell another story. you can talk about the story of san francisco based on your own experience. based on love. base on acceptance. based on bringin people together. >> reporter: dozens came together for the public lighting. after a successful debut last year, this installation, called welcome, i more striking at 4.1 miles long 49 feet wide, and consisting of 12 laser space cannons. the nonprofit arts group behind the bay lights slowly blasted each laser down market street over a

hour. >> our hearts go out to all lgbtq plus people across the country. it's awful they're being persecuted and books are being banned. we hope that we can show a beacon of welcome an celebration here in san francisco. >> reporter: nancy pelosi said just before she left dc, she wa at an event observing the one-year anniversary of the overturning of roe v. wade. >> i was making my remarks and said when i leave here, i'm going home to san francisco to see all of you and turn on the rainbow lights to express our pride! [ cheers and applause ] >> and you know what they said to me? get out of here! >> that lighting event was not without controversy. an artist is adamant the nonprofit that put on the display stole her work as we first reported

yesterday evening. the illuminates welcome display for san francisco pride last year, side by side with the artist's work. she says she's been displaying her work all over th world for 14 years and says she has a copyright for it. she was hoping illuminate would pull th plug on tonight's light installation, which as you saw, did not happen. or that they might credit her directly. she said she was too upset to watch tonight's presentation. >> the thing that hurts me even more is the irony that lovely nancy pelosi, who i adore, um, and the fact that i, um, premiered my first global rainbow for obama's inauguratio is going to introduce this work and it's, it's just beyond me. i, i just won't accept it.

>> but illuminate was adamant they did nothing wrong. we aske them about the accusations on our morning show earlier today. >> can you kind of give us your response? >> i'm unaware of the dispute. look, from our perspective, there's no dispute. the pride flag was created by gilbert baker in san francisco to present inclusion and love, and we're projecting the world's largest pride flag right down market street. so, um, it's all good. >> so mattern says she's hired an attorney. i checked in with her tonight, and she says as of right now she plans on taking the matter up in court. another hall mark start to the pride weekend is the trans march. now in its 20th year, th fight for equality is more urgent than ever. >> reporter: it's a celebration nobody wants to miss. >> it's nice out here. the people, the entertainment, i mean, the good vibe and some of

my friends are here. >> reporter: especially christina gilmore, an entertainer who's captivated audiences in san francisco sinc 1995. for her, this year's tran rally holds a special significance. we met sweet candy, she's been a transgender advocate since first attending the march in 2008. >> events like this are important because we raise our voices and we're heard. we're not going to just take it. we'l fight back for our rights to have a fair chance to live our lives as, you know, and just be happy. >> reporter: that's why the organizers say this year's program has a bigger purpose. >> we are celebrating today, we're very intentional in putting together our programmin to really validate some of the anger about the 500 plus anti-trans legislative bills in the country right now. >> reporter: and sweet candy says the battle will continue. >> trans rights are human rights. we're not hurting anybody, and we should protect

the trans youth too because the matter, and they'll have an opportunity to do things the youth 20 years ago didn't have. >> and that couple is one of many that came to city hall today to celebrate pride by tying the knot. many feel like it's once again a critical moment for marriage equality. >> with everything that's going on across the country, who know where gay rights are headed. no seems like a great time to do it. >> i think it's important for people in other parts of the country and small towns and red states to be able to see couple like us getting married, celebrating pride, and knowing that they're not alone. >> city hall made sure this was a special event today. those newlyweds all got special commemorative pride certificates. we're not done with pride yet. coming up, we have all you need to know ahead of the big parade, including how to get there, and no surprise, there's

some headlines across the bay area now. we have an update to the gun battle that happened last week on the embarcadero. the district attorney's office announced today the person arrested for the crime will not be charged, at least for now. jenkins says there isn't enough evidence, as of yet, to prosecute the 33-year-old suspect from pittsburgh. six people were hurt in that shoot out that spanned almost a mile along the embarcadero causing chaos on father's day. jenkins wrote, this is a complex investigation involving multipl crime scene locations, many witnesses, as well as significant evidence that must be analyzed. in oakland, human remains were found outside the oakland zoo near mountain boulevard nea a back entrance to the zoo. we don't know much about this, but police say they got the call, and they found someone who had died. they didn't say how or wh

the victim is, but they're stil investigating. and a new development in th saga to replace the ousted san francisco police chief. the commission has hired a consultant from la to take over the search after turmoil within the commission. the saga began back in january when the newly elected mayor suspended and fired armstrong citing the way he handled officer misconduct. the consulting firm expects the hiring process to take about five months. okay, this is a huge weeken for people visiting the bay area, specifically san francisc for pride weekend. a lot of people are going to want to kno how to dress, how to prepare. >> yeah, this is the view from oakland looking towards san francisco. you can see the fog bubbling in as the sun went down. beautiful view. a lot going on in oakland too, lake fest going on. there are events across the bay area, and the weather looks pretty good overall. >> cooperative. >> fairly cooperative. not necessarily going to feel like summertime, but let's look at the big picture pattern. the

cooler than normal temperatures continue into the weekend. just a parade of ripples in the uppe levels of the atmosphere allowing the marine layer to really expand vertically. we start the morning with plenty o cloud cover and ground level fog. and then sunshine in the afternoon with comfortably cool temperatures, but still eight t ten degrees below average befor a bigger shift in the large scale weather pattern occurs. you can really see that kicking in in the ten-day outlook for livermore. average high for tha part of the east bay is in the mid-80s. not really going to approach that until wednesday, but then a quick transition. temperatures rocketing up from tuesday to thursday. we'll even make it up to around 90 degrees in livermore for the last day o june next friday. if you're ready for it to feel like summertime, again, just wait a few more days. the fog beginnin to swirl around our salesforce tower cam a bit. mid-50s across

the board. 55 in santa rosa to 58 in concord. a lot of low cloud cover and some fog at ground level to start the day tomorrow. other than the north bay valleys, we're not talking about severely reduced visibility to start the day on saturday. the clouds back up to the coast. along the coast, you'll have a hard time getting rid of the gray skies. you're stuck with that throughout the entire weekend and even monday and tuesday. temperatures tonight don't change much from where they currently stand. the drop to the low 50s compared to right now in the mid to upper 50s. not going to be a warm day in san francisco, so if you're headed out to the giants game against the diamondbacks, temperatures start out at 60 an then backing down by the end of the game to around 60, even wit the sunshine trying to peek through the low cloud cover. 50 at the coast, low to mid-60s

around the bay, and 70s inland. a good 8 to 12 degrees below average farther inland. definitely on the cool side. an saturday temperatures topping out in the grove around 60 with a little sunshine peeking through towards the start of th concert at 2:00. temperatures will warm up to the upper 60s and low 70s in san francisco an oakland by next thursday and friday. a more noticeable warm up inland. low 80s in the north baby mid-week. mid to upper 80s inland and east bay, and even along the coast you make it up into the low 60s. but that's a warm spell along the coast. we'll keep you posted over the next several days. >> all right, paul, thank you s much. we're following some pretty significant breaking news tonight out of russia where a private army that's been fighting russia's war in ukrain seems to have turned on the russian military. the group's leader claims russia killed
