its own spike. good evening, we are just hours away from san francisco's pride parade, but people are no waiting to celebrate. festivities got going early in the castro with the family bloc party turning the street into a lively celebration of diversity which not only boosts the mood of the community, but is a big win for businesses as well. >> we made it through the pandemic, and, you know, with the help of our community partners at the castro merchant and everyone coming together, we're just really, really happy we're here together. >> we love coming out to these events because it's just bringing the community together it brings us together, and it's just another way of meeting eac other. >> i deeply want to thank them lot for their support. all the small businesses are very supportive. they love to have these events because they bring a lot of people, a lot of business for them. >> and that was just the start

of things. betty yu has more on the city-wide celebrations happening ahead of the parade. >> reporter: the night before san francisco's signature pride parade takes over market street the city was buzzing from celebrations from the castro to downtown. >> let's see what we have here, ooh, chocolates. >> reporter: at this chocolate shop in the castro, the owner's passion and identity can be see in her hand crafted work. >> for me, it's not just about being gay or not. it's also about whoever you are. be as weird as you are because we're cool with that. i want you to just go with it and love me for who i am. that's what we're trying to do. >> reporter: and on this final pride weekend, customers are lining up for her sweets. she said overall sales started

picking up in june, and on this saturday, they're double what the shop normally would bring i on this day. customers also purchased pride shirts. >> when i first moved here, i couldn't even say the word gay. i was really scared of saying the word gay. i had a relationship with a woman for quite awhile then, but i couldn't say the word while living in the philippines. when i moved here, it took awhile, but i was able to say i was gay and a lesbian. >> reporter: the shop is a big draw for customers like glen wh grew up in san francisco. he also attended their first drag brunch on saturday. >> it's amazing. as a gay male from the philippines, it's important to be out and safe. >> reporter: in downtown san francisco, the w hotel hosted long live drag. the event celebrated and honored the life

of lgbtq icon who passed away i april. >> she was a force, you know? >> she was. >> she liked to be raunchy and work out a lot of angst on the stage, and she provided a space for us to do the same. >> reporter: they entertained the crowd with performances. they said it's especially important to do so now as anti-lgbtq legislations, threats, and violence ramp up i mostly red states across the country. >> we're just performers doing an art. don't be scared of us. mean, there's no need to be scared of us, you know what i'm saying? we're just people. >> reporter: similar celebrations happening all over the world. huge crowds took to the streets in mexico city. mor

than half a million people made their way to the capital's town square. paris and poland held events to celebrate inclusion and love as well. while the official pride parade is sunday, the 31st annual dyke march was held in san francisco today. it follows the trans march that took place yesterday. thousands of people once flooded the park to demonstrate against sexism, racism, homo phobia, and poverty. darren peck is here no with the forecast. it's going to take longer for the sun to come out tomorrow. here's the take away for the forecast specific for pride. we'll be in the upper 50s. it will be kind of a june gloom looking day. i don't thin anyone will care. it's typical, classic weather for this time o

center. the parade creates a lot of traffic. the city is urging people to use public transit, but muni says many downtown bus lines will be rerouted. bart is expecting peak travel time on sunday from 10:00 to 2:00 heading into san francisco, and from 4:00 to 8:00 getting out. the sf bay ferry is also expecting high ridership for sunday's parade. they're adding additional trips sunday morning and evening on the vallejo, oakland, and alameda routes. be sure to catch our special hope, love, pride. a celebration tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to noon. it airs live on our siste station kbck and streams on the free cbs news app. today is also marking the one year since the supreme cour overturning the constitutional right to an abortion. to mark the occasion, reproductive rights advocates took to the streets of washington dc today. at the same time, anti-abortion

reproductive rights took center stage at the orange festival. abortion is protected in california, which is why planne parenthood of orange and san bernardino counties has been providing care to about 40 wome a month, all of whom traveled from out of state. >> what can we do on a policy level here in california to mak it as easy as possible for folk who are ready to go through all the hurdles and hoops just to get basic health care. >> they help people with things like lodging, transportation, and gas money. some new numbers on fentany deaths in the south bay. santa clara county saw a spike in overdose deaths last month, and now city officials are cracking down on drug dealers. >> look, if you come to san jos to sell drugs, we will arrest you and prosecute you. if you'r buying and using drugs outside, we'll do everything in our powe to compel you to treatment. we

need to hold people accountable >> the mayor, santa clara officials, and police are joining forces to combat drug use in the city. deaths in the county more than doubled from april to may. >> i had a friend overdose two days ago. >> reporter: sean lyes in a homeless camp in the edge of sa jose known as fentanyl row. >> i know people who have overdosed quite a few times. i've used it several times. >> reporter: he's talking about narcan. he carries it with him all the time, and first administered it to a woman who overdosed and passed out inside one of these portable toilets, suggesting the drug robs users of dignity long before stealing their final breath. >> pulled her out, put the narcan in her nose, pushed the thing. it didn't work the first time, but it worked the second time and she came out of it. >> reporter: but the epidemic o

overdoses can't be confined to this or any encampment. the santa clara county medical examiner's office is sounding the alarm. fentanyl deaths spiked from 17 in april to 41 i may. 141% increase in a single month, well on the way to exceeding last year's grim tota of 160 deaths. >> we've seen fentanyl in both the fake pill form as well as i powder form. and the vast majority of fentanyl related deaths actually involve fentany mixed with other drugs. >> reporter: 50 times more potent than heroin, doctors and public health officials have long known the dangers of fentanyl. but because it's cheap, highly addictive, and readily available, curbing its spread has been a challenge. >> this drug here, this fentany is really killing people at an alarming rate. i think when you're addicted and living on the streets and you're in

reached. but tensions are still high. >> reporter: the russia president condemned the wagner leader on tv as a traitor. >> meanwhile, the war in ukrain wages on, and some speculate th russian turmoil could present a opportunity for ukraine to step up a counteroffensive. it hits close to home for the thousands of people in san francisco who were born in russia. john ramos hit the streets in little russia to see how they're feeling about this latest turmoil to hit their hom country. >> reporter: san francisco's richmond district is home to nearly 1 million people of russian descent. still, it's hard to get anyone to talk abou what's happening in that countr today. ththat's how sensitive t war in ukraine has made them. the news of the uprising by the wagner mercenary group is well known in the little russia area of san francisco. a young man inside this russian bakery was willing to speak about it, but only off camera. >> when i heard the news for th first time, i was actually

really happy because i feel tha we finally have a chance to change something inside the country. and even though i hate the wagner group. he is a murderer, he is a bad guy. i wa thinking that he can finally change his mind and make something good for the country and stop the putin. >> reporter: stopping putin is common sentiment in this largel pro-ukrainian community. elana, a native of ukraine, took some delight in putin's own military contractors turning against the regime. >> he got what he deserves, and what goes around comes around. these people realize that they shouldn't be part of putin agenda. everybody got what they deserve. >> reporter: this man from lithuania said he's been

watching as the head of wagner upped his rhetoric in a persona battle with russia's defense minister. >> you know, it seemed to get more and more intense. then all of the sudden they're talking about him marching on moscow, and i thought what is heck is going on here? is this going to be a civil war? >> reporter: that seems to have been avoided with the announcement the wagner forces were pulling back. but back at the bakery, the young russian national that left his country in protest said the uprising, while not successful, may have sent a powerful message to his countrymen about the fragile nature of putin's totalitarian regime. >> russian people can finally start to see how easy it is to stop putin and stop being so afraid of him. it's not only ho scary he is, now it's about how weak he is. because he can stop

by the military group. if peopl grab a weapon, they can do the same. >> reporter: in his angry rant before launching the uprising, the wagngner leader announced t war in ukraine is based on a lie. the question is whether that message will make its way to the russian people and whether it will make any difference if it does. time now to get a check on the forecast, and darren peck i here with us. you are standing kind of in front of a very cool picture of downtown san francisco. >> yes, the light installation for pride going from near the ferry building and up to twin peaks, four miles long of light and you can see it, this is the camera on sutro tower. so that' market street. the lights are going 4.1-mile extending up to twin peaks near the pink triangle. what's great about this, this is the time of year where at this time of night, we

could easily have a thick marin layer and you wouldn't see that but we have a clear night for now, or at least the deck of th clouds are so high that even though the marine layer has built back in, it's not obscuring the show. that's a spectacular view. i almost hit to put the numbers in front of it. it's 57 right now. this is san jose. excuse the juxtaposition. san jose is a better example to talk about th warm upcoming at the end of the seven-day forecast. the bar is pretty high there. so we're going from 70 tomorrow. you should be around 80. you'll be well below that tomorrow. by th time we get to friday, the numbers are already near 90. so it's only four or five degrees above average when we get over here. we're not breaking records. but we've been so cool for so long, it's going to feel warm. by friday it's going to

come on fast. that's probably the real headline of the forecast, but we'll have plenty of time to talk about that over the next few days. in the meantime, another review. there's the marine layer in the morning. by 10:00 a.m., it's widespread. by noon to 1:00, it's melted back to the immediate bay. by 2:00 to 3:00, maybe just the city and immediate golden gate towards berkeley. it will be persistent over the city tomorrow, so plan on a gray day. whatever your plans whether you're in the cit for pride, stern grove happenin tomorrow, classic overcast there. but it's relatively high clouds. it's not terribly windy it will be a wonderful june day if you're inland, there's plent of blue sky and 15 degrees cooler than average for some of these places in the low 70s. yo should be in the mid-80s this time of year for some of the warmer inland valleys and the tri-valley. san francisco and oakland, you see the warm up fo
