host. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are heading into the july 4th holiday travel surge, and it's already been a nightmare at airports across the country, especially in the northeast. passengers have been stranded in some cases for days as more than 30,000 flights in the u.s. were canceled or delayed since sunday due to severe weather. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: a rough morning if you're one of the thousands across the country who have been stuck in this travel mess at the airports. a chain reaction linked not just to the weather but tech issues and staffing problems all ahead of yet another major travel moment. ♪ the providence high school singers practiced and stretched to kill time while stranded at l.a.x. their connecting flight to newark was canceled, though they've been rebooked on new flights to get to their choir tour in ireland. >> we've all been really patient

thankfully, and we've been trying to make the best out of this. >> reporter: similar scenes played out in airports across the northeast since the weekend with severe storms stranding thousands. according to the flight tracking website flight aware, more than 2,000 flights were canceled yesterday in the u.s., and another 7,000 delayed. >> we sat on the tarmac for four hours, and then got here. we were able to get a rental car but waited for 3.5 hours. >> reporter: united airlines says 150,000 of its customers have been affected. in a message to employees, the company's ceo slammed the federal aviation administration's decision to cancel flights in the newark region claiming the severe weather is something the faa has historically been able to manage. the faa has recently struggled with a shortage of air traffic controllers. >> the faa is speaking to this and stands ready to work with companies to address any issues they're facing. >> reporter: that comes as aaa predicts record-breaking travel volume over the long fourth of july weekend with more than four million americans expected to

fly to their destinations. you know, going back to the air traffic control issue, back in march the faa warned that the shortage at its new york facility could cause issues for summer travel. we are now seeing that happen. meanwhile, tsa is expecting that friday is going to be the busiest flight day of the holiday weekend with potentially record-breaking 2.82 million folks passing through the checkpoints. i'm sure that all of them are hoping they will not be watching fireworks from the airport. >> oh, my goodness. that's so true. jarred hill in new york. thank you. well, drifting smoke from hundreds of wildfires in canada is expected to create unhealthy air quality continues in parts of new york state today. the same thing that happened earlier this month. yesterday smoke covered parts of the midwest in a thick haze. several cities including chicago and detroit had some of the worst air quality in the world. now breaking overnight, a spokesperson for former donald trump attorney rudy giuliani confirmed investigators with the

special counsel's office recently interviewed him as part of its january 6th investigation. it involves alleged efforts to interfere with the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election. a source tells cbs news investigators were particularly interested in meeting giuliani's -- in meetings, rather, giuliani attended at the white house. a special counsel did not indicate that giuliani is a subject of the probe. and now to a cbs news exclusive. we are bringing you the first television interview with an irs whistleblower, his name is gary shapley, since he spoke to lawmakers last month. the lead investigator in the hunter biden case tells jim axelrod he felt the president's son received preferential treatment. and in a stunning claim says that he was blocked from pursuing leads that could lead -- that could have led him to the president himself. >> if this was any other person they likely would have served their sentence. >> reporter: gary shapley was a lead irs supervisory agent in operation sportsman, the investigation into hunter biden.

he said he uncovered conduct that warranted more serious charges. >> there were personal expenses that were taken as business expenses, prostitutes, sex club memberships, hotel rooms for purported drug dealers. >> reporter: how much did hunter biden owe in taxes? >> from 2014 to 2019 it was $2.2 million. >> reporter: the back taxes were paid off, and last week the trump-appointed u.s. attorney in delaware, david weiss, reached an agreement with hunter biden. the president's son would admit to a firearm charge and plead guilty for his failure to pay taxes. if a judge signs off, the deal means no jail time. >> testimony we have just released details a lack of u.s. attorney independence. >> reporter: shapley told lawmakers u.s. attorney weiss was blocked from bringing stronger charges, but merrick garland said last week that weiss was not. >> he was given complete

authority to make all decisions on his own. >> i documented exactly what happened, and it doesn't seem to match what the attorney general or the u.s. attorney are saying today. >> reporter: shapley provided this contemporaneous email he wrote after an october meeting last year. he says weiss told him the opposite, that weiss is not the deciding person on whether charges are filed. >> it was just shocking to me. >> reporter: shapley, who is still working for the irs, told us that even before president biden took office he was directed to avoid leads involving hunter's father. >> there were certain investigative steps we weren't allowed to take that could have led us to president biden. >> reporter: you wanted to take them? >> we needed to take them. >> reporter: you weren't allowed to take them? >> that's correct. >> reporter: it's important to point out that at point in the investigation, donald trump was still president, and his attorney general, william barr, had rules in place that may have limited what shapley account

-- could pursue. hunter biden's lawyers did not respond referring to an earlier statement where they point out biden expressed contrition for his legal issues. jim axelrod, cbs news, new york. overseas, at least eight people are dead and 56 more injured after two russian missiles struck an eastern ukrainian city yesterday. one missile struck a restaurant where at least three children are among the dead. crews were combing through debris in search of survivors, and it comes as the man who attempted a short-lived russian military mutiny over the weekend arrived in neighboring belarus. ian lee reports from kyiv. >> reporter: this was the last sighting of wagner boss yevgeny prigozhin seen driving away from rostov after his failed mutiny. today the belarusian president, alexander lukashenko, said the mercenary leader had landed in his country. his flight into exile fulfilled part of his stated deal with russian president vladimir

putin. lukashenko shed more light on the chaos that gripped russia on saturday when wagner mercenaries defied vladimir putin and marched toward moscow. lukashenko said he told prigozhin that putin would squash him like a bag if wagner troops moved closer to the city. despite being called a traitor, russian authorities announced they've dropped their criminal charges against prigozhin. but lukashenko hinted that his safety isn't guaranteed, saying he urged president putin not to kill prigozhin. today the kremlin returned to its usual choreographed pageantry projecting power and control. putin thanked the military for preventing a civil war. prominent in the crowd was defense minister sergei shoigu, the man prigozhin said he was going to moscow to confront for russia's failures in ukraine. and this evening, moscow continued its deadly missile attacks on the country. two struck a busy shopping center and restaurant in the

"the new york times" reports the supreme court rejected a legal theory that would have transformed american elections. in a 6-3 decision, the court dismissed arguments by north carolina republicans that would have given state legislatures nearly unchecked power over federal elections. the supreme court ruled that
