this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> just days before the holiday weekend, airports are trying to recover from a travel mess. and passengers at sfo are left with nowhere to go. very disappointed, i wish we had gotten a cancellation email. >> plus, cracking down on fourth of july fire dangers, how people could be punished even if they don't actually light any fireworks. and madonna suffers a health scare, why she ended up in the icu and what it means for her upcoming tour. good afternoon, i'm elizabeth cook . we start with that travel mess, stemming from big storms in the east and the midwest, and now causing headaches for passengers on the west coast. across the country, tens of

thousands of passengers are waiting in airports, and that includes sfo. look at all these bags just piled up, it is just a nightmare. we spoke to frustrated passengers. >> all of those delays and cancellations are translating to what we are seeing here, just piles of bags and suitcases and a lot of people just trying to find their belongings. this is naomi carrying her baby mama she is trying to find her family's suitcases, they have been here since yesterday afternoon. unable to get a flight to missouri after their original flight was delayed several times, then it canceled. her baby had all the energy, but naomi said, it has left them frustrated. >> they had thin blankets, and when we asked for more, they said they did not have anymore, they ran out of water and food , they had some cheeses and goldfish, but you can't live on

that. >> and he is trying to get to oregon, he is traveling with his wife and baby, he also faced delays and they aren't sure whether suitcases are. he booked another flight and thought he was good to go. >> i'm just kind of hoping they are there. >> we reached out to united and they pointed to thunderstorms in the northeast for the delays and cancellations across the system. >> they don't have the crew for it, so they are waiting around. >> sharon and thomas are trying to get to hawaii to see their son. >> it is our first flight . she has never flown before. >> reporter: unfortunately, this will be an experience to remember. they are just hoping to get to their destinations

soon and safely. >> we just checked with oakland and san jose airports, a few issues to report in oakland, 44 delays, zero cancellations, 52 delays and two cancellations . and we are hearing similar travel nightmare stories from all across the country, kris van cleave continues our team coverage with how bad it got and who united is pointing the finger at. >> reporter: the problem started over the weekend, severe weather hitting major hubs from colorado east, back-to-back , and emergency repairs at the faa facility outside washington sunday night. the agency is dealing with short staffing. united says more than 150,000 customers were impacted and in a note to employees, the airline ceo writing, the faa frankly failed us this weekend and understaffing by the government led to massive delays, cancellations, diversions. the faa tweeting yesterday, the air traffic controllers are routing floats

flights around the storms. now, just days from a surge of fourth of july holiday travelers, the airlines have little time to catch up, even if the forecast improves. >> there is very little wiggle room left for people who have been affected by these disruptions to get where they are going and heaven help us if we have ongoing disruptions because that means no one is going anywhere. >> the tsa expects friday to be a potentially record-breaking day at airport checkpoints. while this week has been bruising for flyers, so far this summer is actually a little bit better than last year, the number of cancellations are down significantly, even as the number of flights are up compared to last summer. travelers going to social media to express their frustrations. this twitter user says he spent eight hours in line rebooking his united

flights at sfo after they were canceled three times between monday and tuesday. this twitter user also showing how long the line is at the united terminal at sfo you can see some people just sitting down on the floor as they are waiting. and this twitter user says he has been stuck on the east coast for the last 48 hours trying to get back to san francisco. he said his united flights have been canceled four times for louisville and nashville. for those of you staying in the bay area for the fourth of july holiday, emergency crews are warning everyone to leave the fireworks to the pros, especially as the heat increases. the fire danger is high this holiday weekend. and santa clara county made a point to remind its residents to play it safe. >> they stressed that all fireworks are illegal in the county, in santa clara county, you can be fined $1000 if you

are caught selling fireworks, you could end up in jail. and in san jose, you can be punished for posting an event where somebody is shooting off fireworks even if you did not touch them yourself. instead of doing something illegal, risking injuries or starting a fire, officials say just stick to one of the approved fireworks displays. >> every year, first responders and medical staff witnessed the significant injuries that can occur from these illegal firework activities. they present significant injuries, severe burns , permanent disabilities and loss of life. >> the risk of fires has increased because of all the wet weather we had this winter, all the rain means more grass and more fuel for potential fires now that we are entering the heart of the summer months. they are encouraging business owners to take precautions to minimize their fire risk and

california fire will increase staffing over the weekend. also, you can report illegal fireworks to the city on their website or by calling 311. some parts of the bay area do actually let people buy their own fireworks, as long as they are the safe type, like in dublin where they officially went on sale today, there are 15 fireworks stands in dublin, this is one we stopped by today to see the first people stocking up. it includes : fountains, sparklers and smoke bombs. basically fireworks that don't actually explode. they are only allowed to be used at certain places at certain times. >> it's important that the community members follow the rules and regulations. >> dublin allows the use of safe fireworks on july 4 between 10:00 am and 10:00 p.m. at single-family residences, also at sports grounds, alamo creek park . other cities where you can buy

safe fireworks include union city, gilroy, san bruno, pacifica, rio vista , dixon and cloverdale. the heat is going to be building , beginning tomorrow. the heat advisory kicks in at 11:00 a.m. on friday and it goes all the way through 11:00 p.m. on sunday. we will talk about how the heat is going to begin building tomorrow coming up in the first alert forecast. signs won't be allowed on public property in one city in the tri-valley, why some say the rule goes

here's some stories we are following around the bay, a deadly police shooting in richmond. at least one officer shot a person while serving a search warrant on sandra ling island this morning. that person died despite rescue efforts from other officers. authorities say the investigation was related to illegal high-powered guns. a fire tore through a construction site this morning in morgan hill. cal fire contained the fire to this one building, luckily nobody was hurt , they are investigating

the cause. an update on a fire that forced more than 160 people out of the san leandro apartment. alameda county fires that building inspectors are working to get the east 14th street apartment building safe, up to 10 units will be closed because of fire and water damage. the tenants were given hotel vouchers. starting this weekend, livermore is banning signs on public property, even yard sale signs. and the ones for even those lemonade stands. it started as a way to ban political science, but now some people are upset over the unintended consequences. >> the city council first voted in favor of the van in december 2022 right after the november elections. but, the sign ban does not go into effect until july 1. >> there is a primary function, to lead consumers to homes for sale.

>> shawn jackson has been a real estate broker for more than 15 years and uses the signs to advertise for open houses. but starting saturday, signs can only be on private property. any signs on public property in livermore are banned. >> it seems more widespread. >> reporter: it was first proposed at last year's election cycle when councilmembers said they got an overwhelming amount of complaints about campaign signs on public property. >> we had thousands of signs during the last campaign, all over the community, it was just way too much. >> reporter: but according to the city attorney, they cannot be banned just because of their content. the city can enact a content neutral ban, including signs about lost pets, upcoming community events and sends science advertising garage sales. >> for the few garage sale signs , i think it is worth it. people pride themselves in

livermore as being a clean and beautiful community. >> reporter: but, he wants about the unintended consequences about people trying to get the word out about their small business. >> they have to find a way to get it out to the local consumer. >> reporter: in the downtown area, shops and businesses can still put out signs on the sidewalks . the only thing that will happen if people put up signs where they are not supposed to be is a city worker will come around and take them down. other cities like berkeley in southern california have similar bans on public property. time to look at the forecast with chief meteorologist, paul heggen. i was on the embargo today and i thought it was going to be pleasant , it was pretty nice. >> the temperatures have not been bad , and there has been a touch of humidity in the

atmosphere as well. you are looking at it, in the form of fog. still tracking the areas of fog as we head through tonight, it is becoming more compressed toward ground-level, so more fog as opposed to low cloud cover and still some patchy drizzle here and there. temperatures will return to normal tomorrow. then the heat is on, 90s to low 100s, that is why we have the heat advisory, then the temperatures back down on monday and tuesday. switching perspectives, let's find some sunshine, the view from mount diablo, temperatures inland took another step up today. just below 70 in san jose. upper 50s and low 60s around the bay. temperatures near the water or going to warm-up for the next few days, just not nearly to the extent that the inland temperatures are going to increase. it'll be cool out there for the a's game against the yankees . the temperatures are going to be dropping down into the 50s throughout the

game so make sure you layer up appropriately. the fog is going to be widespread on thursday, we are not going to completely lose it even as we head into friday, saturday and sunday. later this week the fog will not be as widespread as what it will be tomorrow morning. and by 10:00 in the morning, we should see unobstructed visibility inland, the fog is still stubborn along the coast and it will remain somewhat stubborn, more sunshine peeking through over the bay tomorrow with additional sunshine along the coast by friday. temperatures tonight dropping down to the low to mid 50s. highs tomorrow going to be near average around the bay, about three or four degrees above average further inland. low 60s along the coast, upper 70s and low 80s around the peninsula and the south end of the bay. mid 80s for most of the santa clara valley. near 90 degrees around morgan hill. lower 90s eastland around the east bay. the heat is going to be on

tomorrow, temperatures in the upper 60s in san francisco, low 70s in oakland and the east bay, that is normal. getting closer to 90 degrees as you go farther inland, and even up to triple digit territory already for clearlake. the heat risk tomorrow is going to be at its worst, in the moderate category. but, the moderate heat risk expands friday and even saturday. we introduce a few areas of high risk indicating for folks who aren't ordinarily sensitive to the heat may have a few issues, but that will not be the case near the water. the warmest days, only in the mid-70s for san francisco and temperatures back down to near normal monday and tuesday. it'll take an additional day or so to go back to average temperatures for other parts of the bay area . the alert days because of the heat advisory from friday all the way through 11:00 p.m. on
