well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we are following several developing stories this morning. airline passengers are bracing for more cancelations and delays as we head into the busy july 4th holiday weekend. we're going to get to that in a moment. first, it's dangerous smoke and extreme heat impacting tens of millions of people. air quality alerts are in effect throughout the midwest and northeast as smoke drifts from hundreds of canadian wildfires. adding to the misery, a deadly heat wave moving east after causing at least 13 deaths in texas. jarred hill is in new york with the very latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. an official with the national weather service recently said basically pick your poison -- smoke or heat. we're not going to be out of the cycle for a while, putting the health, safety, and comfort of millions on the line. from cleveland to pittsburgh, chicago and detroit -- >> just a cloud of smoke over

the city. >> reporter: more than 100 million americans are under some kind of air-quality alert as smoke from those massive canadian wildfires continues to blow into the u.s. so bad in detroit wednesday, the epa warned everyone should stay indoors. >> my eyes have been watering, my throat has been sore, i've been coughing. >> reporter: all that smoke is expected to sit over parts of the east coast today including here in new york. federal officials say that's a real concern for sensitive groups like people with asthma, small kids, and older adults. >> we've got a special delivery for you today. >> reporter: further south, free fans are going out in swift county, texas. parts of the state have been hotter than 100 degrees for 14 days straight. the heat has been blamed for more than a dozen deaths there so far. >> we don't usually have this much humidity and have heat indices this high. >> reporter: in houston, the extreme temperatures have even caused roads to buckle. meanwhile, in the west, the

battle is on against wildfires. despite progress on the diamond fire near scottsdale, arizona, officials say it's burned through about 2,500 acres since it began tuesday afternoon. now one expert out of canada said the long-term forecast for the next at least couple of weeks for that country is going to be hot and dry, which is not good for dousing fires and stopping the smoke from blowing into our region. again, this is something that we might have to be worrying about for quite a while. >> my goodness. it is summer. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> reporter: no problem. turning to the gridlock at some of our nation's airports, as we head into the busiest time for summer travel. right now more than 400 flights are delayed with more than 300 grounded. severe storms this week have had a major impact on airlines, leaving scores of passengers stranded including some without their luggage. >> have a lot of valuables in them that has gone somewhere, and i have no idea where.

>> i went from houston to nashville, nashville to baltimore, from baltimore to long island. i almost lost it -- actually that last leg. >> meantime an investigation is under way after a delta flight was forced to make an emergency landing yesterday in north carolina. officials say the plane suffered a mechanical issue. the pilot had to land the plane without its front landing gear. >> it sounded like a loud thud and scraping of metal. >> the passengers and crew exited the plane through slides and were taken to the terminal on a bus. no one was injured. in a statement, delta apologized calling it a rare occurrence. some of the wreckage from the submersible that imploded in the north atlantic including what's believed to be human remains have been recovered. debris from the vessel was brought ashore yesterday in newfoundland, canada. the sub imploded last week on a trip to view the wreckage of the "titanic," killing all five

people on board. the coast guard says the presumed human remains will be brought to the u.s. to be examined by medical experts. an amtrak train carrying nearly 200 derailed in southern california after hitting a ventura county public works truck. it happened yesterday about 50 miles northwest of los angeles. three of the train's seven cars went off the tracks. the driver of the truck was critically injured. 14 people on the train were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. >> we were cruising along, all of a sudden there was a bang. the car started teetering up and down and left and right. it smelled like gasoline. dust was flying. it was very terrifying. i was bracing against the seat. >> a small fire under one of the train cars was quickly put out. the cause of the crash is under investigation. president biden is back in washington this morning after hitting the campaign trail in chicago. mr. biden touted his economic accomplishments yesterday during a speech in front of about 200

supporters. he said his administration is turning things around after what he said were republican policies that crushed america's middle class. >> when i took office the pandemic was raging, and our economy was reeling. supply chains were broken. millions of people unemployed. today, the u.s. has the highest economic growth rate leading the world economies since the pandemic. the highest in the world. [ applause ] >> mr. biden said more work is needed on the economy, though. he also said he believes the u.s. will avoid a recession. a new "ap" poll she's only a third of american adults approve of his economic leadership. former president donald trump is countersuing former magazine columnist e. jean carroll. last month a federal jury awarded carroll $5 million in a civil lawsuit that she brought against trump. the jury found that trump sexually abused her in 1996 and later defamed her.

the jury said he did not rape her, as she claimed. trump filed a suit yesterday claiming carroll owes him money for defaming him by continuing to insist she was raped. a marine veteran pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the choke hold death of a man on a new york city subway train. video on board the train last month shows 24-year-old daniel penny putting jordan neily in a choke hold for several minutes. penny has said that he was protecting himself and others after neely threatened people and acted erraticalli. he said that he did not intend to kill him. neely was homeless and had a history of mental illness. at least two people are dead and several more injured after an attack yesterday in a russian-controlled part of eastern ukraine. the russian-installed mayor of donetsk blamed ukraine for the attack. but president volodymyr zelenskyy has not claimed responsibility. meantime, new fallout from the failed armed rebellion by the

head of russia's private army. ian lee with more from kyiv. >> reporter: the images shocked the world -- wagner troops advancing toward moscow before turning around. but questions remain surrounding the mercenary boss yevgeny prigozhin's failed mutiny. cbs news has learned the u.s. has intelligence that a senior russian general had advanced knowledge of the mutiny. the kremlin says these allegations are speculation and gossip. in kyiv, ukraine's national security chief claimed prigozhin was in league with not one but 14 senior russian military officers. "prigozhin is not an independent person," he tells me. "he is owned by high-ranking people in president putin's inner circle." so prigozhin does have support in the highest ranks? "there are his owners," he says. "this is a group who have a goal to change the leadership of russia." many analysts say president

putin has been weakened by this revolt. "even if he executes the generals who had some sort of part in the mutiny, this will not affect the outcome," he tells me. stranded on a fire department boat. the firefighters earlier rescued two contractors cutting trees along the river bank when the workers' boat stalled. after that rescue the firefighters' boat went over the falls and got stuck. no one was hurt. a florida beach is being declared the deadliest in the country, and there's new footage of a mass shooting in texas. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "wall street journal" reports on body cam video released by police showing a texas officer responding to a deadly shopping mall shooting last month. now a warning, some of the video is disturbing. >> yes! gunman including three children. the "new york post" says florida's panama city beach is the deadliest beach in the u.s. seven people have died in the area this month due to rip currents. three of them on saturday. along the gulf coast, rip currents have claimed at least 11 lives over ten days. authorities say red flag warnings posted on beaches alert swimmers to the dangerous conditions. >> unfortunately some people just don't listen to that danger warning. they'll be darned if they don't go into that water, and unfortunately it will take their lives when you're not used to that type of conditions. >> former nfl quarterback ryan mallett drowned tuesday in nearby destin. rip currents were not observed that day. "the new york times" says one of the five men wrongly convicted in the central park jogger case has a commanding lead in a democratic primary race for city council. yusef salaam was 15 years old
