where the investigation stands at this hour. tracking extreme weather. severe storms packing torrential rain and a tornado threat set to slam parts of the south and northeast. we're tracking the latest. and want to be rich overnight? no one won saturday's powerball jackpot. what the prize is worth in tonight's drawing. good morning. i'm wendy gillette in for anne-marie green. we begin with the search for at least two suspects who opened fire at a neighborhood block party in baltimore. surveillance video obtained by cbs baltimore station wjz shows people running through the streets yesterday morning after shots rang out. two people were killed, and at least 28 others injured. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: witnesses tell cbs news they thought that the gunshots were fireworks at first. sadly that mass shooting in baltimore was not the only one over the weekend.

surveillance video shows the chaos after a deadly mass shooting in baltimore. cups, a popcorn machine, even a shoe left behind. all signs of a celebration that quickly turned into tragedy. >> this was a reckless, cowardly act of violence that has taken two lives and altered many, many more. >> shooting at 805 redland court -- >> reporter: around 12:30 sunday morning at least two started shooting into an annual block party. >> got a lot of victims down. >> reporter: in the hail of bullets, two people were killed. 20-year-old kylis fagbemi and 18-year-old aaliyah gonzales. at least 28 others shot and injured, many of them minors. the youngest just 13 years old. >> it broke my heart because it could have been us. i don't know how to digest it. >> reporter: in wichita, kansas, another mass shooting, this time at a nightclub.

triggering massive flash flooding. shutting down highways and leaving drivers stranded. and a deadly heat wave continues to grip parts of the southwest. places like arizona and texas can expect to see triple-digit temperatures today. july 4th holiday travel troubles continue. more than 8,000 flights were delayed or canceled across the country yesterday. new york was hit the hardest. it comes after tens of thousands of flights were delayed or canceled last week due to severe storms, technical glitches, and staffing shortages. transportation secretary pete buttigieg told "face the nation" the bad weather was the main reason for the problems. >> anything that's upper the control of the airlines and anything that we can do on the faa side we need to continue pushing to make sure that there's the smoothest possible experience for air passengers everywhere. >> he says the faa is moving to hire more workers to help alleviate travel delays.

breaking overnight, the white house grounds were evacuated after the secret service discovered an unknown item. a hazmat team was called to the area forcing temporary road closures around the white house. officials later deemed the unknown item safe. at this point it's unclear what the item was. no injuries were reported. also in washington, police are searching for a suspect who used explosives in a series of attacks on businesses. the three attacks took place within 15 minutes of each other yesterday morning. investigators say the first one happened when a device was detonated on the sidewalk near a bank atm. another explosive device was set off on the sidewalk in front of a nike store. and a molotov cocktail-style object was thrown through a supermarket window. all the businesses were closed at the time. no one was hurt. breaking now, israel has launched a large-scale military operation in the west bank city of jenin. palestinian officials say at least five people have been killed, and 27 injured.

are going to be able to have individual freedom, and that's a win for the united states of america. >> reporter: last week the high court's 6-3 conservative majority ruled race cannot be a factor when colleges and universities consider applicants. justices also sided with a designer who opposed making same-sex wedding websites, and invalidated president biden's student loan forgiveness program that would have wiped out nearly half a trillion dollars in borrower debt. >> the majority of people that would have benefited for this student loan forgiveness are people with multiple graduate degrees. >> reporter: the administration said it would have provided relief for many middle-class americans. despite the blow, president biden vowed to carve out a new plan to forgive those loans. >> we'll use every tool to help you get the relief you need and reach your dreams. >> reporter: according to white house estimates some 20 million americans would have seen their student loan balances erased altogether. the biden administration will

look to using the higher education act which will look to try to develop a new authority to take on student loan forgiveness. but president biden says that path will take time. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. former vice president mike pence is denying that then-president donald trump reportedly pressured him to call the governor of arizona following the 2020 presidential election. "the washington post" reported that trump pushed pence to call then-governor doug ducey to urge him to find evidence to help overturn the state's election results. yesterday on "face the nation," pence said he did call ducey. >> i don't remember any pressure. i did check in with not only governor ducey but other governors in states that were going through the legal process of reviewing their election results. but there was no pressure involved. >> the "post" also reported that trump called ducey to pressure him to find enough fraudulent votes to help overturn his

150 arrests overnight. yesterday rioters clashed with police burning hundreds of vehicles and setting buildings on fire. they were protesting the deadly police shooting of a 17-year-old boy during a traffic stop last tuesday. the grandmother of the teenager killed by police during a traffic stop. the home of the mayor in a paris suburb was hit by a burning car injuring his wife and a child. there were protests over florida's new immigration law, and hotel workers hit the picket line. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the los angeles times" reports thousands of southern california hotel workers walked off the job. 15,000 cooks, room attendants, servers, dish washers, bellmen, and front desk agents in los angeles and orange county began striking yesterday. they're demanding higher pay, better benefits, and less strenuous workloads. the contract at more than 60 hotels expired midnight friday. a deal was reached last week
