on the hook for student loan bills in a matter of months. that is after the supreme court struck down president biden's original attempt to cancel the debt. as natalie brand report, he has not given up. >> reporter: student borrowers who protested the supreme cour striking down president biden's loan forgiveness plan, are now wondering what is next, as payments are poised to resume i october. >> it is frustrating to know that in another month or two, i will have an additional $500 to pay, it's tough. >> reporter: the biden administration i want to use a law passed in 1965, the higher education act, to move forward with a new plan. but, it warns that process could take more time. >> reporter: the student production centers as it could take up to a year. >> there could be a process to bring together experts, and get public comment, essentially establish the contours of a new

cancellation program. >> reporter: in the meantime, she says borrowers should make sure there information is up-to-date with the department of education and loan services and keep an eye out in case you are eligible for the public service loan forgiveness program, or income driven repayment plans. >> there are other opportunitie while we are continue to fight to see this broader debt cancellation. >> reporter: president biden says borrowers cannot begin making payments this fall will not face a default or be reported to credit bureaus or debt collection agencies for on year. borrowers beware, do not fall for scams. experts emphasize the department of education will not be calling you on the phone and asking for your social security number. no to some stories we are followin around the bay, today. a busy scene at an investigation near san leandro after a man was sho and killed by a sheriff deputy overnight but this happened on

163rd avenue, in pursuit of a suspected stolen car on 580. an then, >> we only knew there were two suspects, one took off, and with one person still hiding i the area , so we do have individuals in custody right now. >> reporter: authorities are trying to piece together what happened before the chase. in contra costa county, a chase ended with a fiery crash and two arrests that happened around 1:30 sunday morning. stolen nissan frontier was seen speeding away. the truck becam damaged, and the sparks caused fire. that crashed by the san marcos boulevard offramp. in newark, and firefighters

9:00. you can find us on the free cbs news app and a full list of bay area fourth of july celebrations, shows and parades on our website. a number of new laws just went into effect in california, on july 1st. some go towards strengthening the rights of victims of gun violence while others target retail theft rings. devin fehely explains. >> reporter: following california law. for example, by not performing a background check and selling a gun to someone who would otherwise not be eligible to buy one. >> what we need to do is make sure that the law is there to fight for ordinary people against these gun manufacturers who really have taken no responsibility for putting all these weapons of mass destruction on our streets. >> reporter: the new law is patterned after similar legislation in new york and it is likely to fix the face legal challenges by gun rights advocates. but, the assembly member says he is confident it will stand up to legal scrutiny

>> this has been held up in court. in fact, this law is based on different proceedings which really says that states had the right to hold gun manufacturers liable. >> reporter: another law targets retail theft rings, an specifically takes aim at peopl who sell stolen goods online. requiring them to disclose personal information to online market places, thus making it harder to offload stolen merchandise. and, yet another new law seals the criminal convictions of felons, four years after completing their prison sentences. the information would still be accessible to law enforcement, and to specific employers, like schools. he says he believes the new gun law will bring much-needed accountability. >> too often, these guns get into the hands of the wrong people. and, really, this is about the victims of when those guns get into those hands, the victim saying hey, gun manufacturers, we want to hold

you responsible. >> one gun advocacy group is suing the state over the new law, calling it unconstitutiona . the national shooting sports foundation claims the governor signed the law in defiance of a decision made by the u.s. supreme court, which lifted mos state laws on open carry in public. tesla stock is on the rise, shares are at $277, nearly doubled in value this year alone. tesla recently cut prices, helping to deliver almost half 1 million cars between april and june. still ahead, bring people together for sports and for community, the growing demand for places to play pickle ball around the bay. others are headed to the slopes. it is july, when skiers are taking advantage of what is left of our epic winter. as we get closer to the holiday tomorrow, temperatures have backed off the extreme hea we have inland over the weekend still toasty in the east bay with temperatures near 90 . at

now to a sport with a funny sounding name and a growing following. pickle ball is getting more popular around the bay area, including the peninsula and the south bay. jocelyn moran takes a look at the demand for more places to play. >> reporter: the sound of this ball, just hitting it, we can't think of anything else.

>> it is about the smiles that it brings, and the people you meet. >> reporter: he is part of the call about the pickle ball club on any given morning you can se the courts taking up at the park. >> i'm part of like 50 what's up groups. we all meet up and have fun and go to tournaments. >> reporter: he says, rather than sitting in front of a computer, he gets to meet peopl of all walks of life. his pickl ball partner here is amy, the president of the pickle ball club. >> we have 22 languages , so al languages and all levels of income, everyone is playing. yesterday i played games of a 9-year-old. this morning i played games with an 88-year-old. so, we have got al ages. >> reporter: you have to trust your partner. >> forming a relationship with someone for like 10 minutes. >> reporter: and compete agains two others. >> people you just get to know

through this amazing game. >> reporter: he says people walk by asking about the sport. he does not think there are enough courts in the area >> we get 10 or 20 people, ever day and in the courts are not being built that quickly. so, the supply is definitely not keeping up at all. >> some people helping change that. >> reporter: mike fox is the general manager of this area opening soon, called the hub sa jose. he has played pickle ball in palo alto and is all too familiar with the demand. this used to be a fries electronics warehouse, out of business just a couple of years ago. mike say the owners have opened up clubs in southern california and saw an opportunity to move in here. >> there is nothing else like this in the bay area. this is all really popular. >> reporter: event spaces for occasions like birthdays, and courts are designated at all levels.

>> there were loading docks behind that, which had the meta ramp for loads, those two courts did not have enough room to do a standard, traditional size. but, we made it to court that are 15 feet wide, we are calling these california single for different players like myself, it's really fun to play on this narrower court. >> reporter: it's not all easy. some of us on the morning team try to doubt ourselves. it can get competitive. >> beautiful. >> out. >> reporter: but at the end, yo can understand what amy and justin described. a good way to get out of the house, and the feeling of community. on july 11th, the san francisco parks and rec department will open three indoor pickle ball courts at th

palace of fine arts but you can reserve them for free. with a lot of people taking days off work this week, many are headed to the sierra for skiing. palisades tahoe is one of the few places in the countr where you can still ski right now thanks to lake tahoe's second snowiest winter on record, there is still snow on the ground and skiers are takin full advantage. >> just got to keep going every day. the lifter spinning. you got to be out here winning. >> spend money on the stuff that makes you happy. and skiing anytime of the year, if you can squeeze it in in july, do it. >> this is one of two resorts i california with running left, and it runs through tomorrow. i is july. skiing in july , that' pretty crazy, paul. >> it's amazing, but it is nice to see, as well. mostly the continuing benefits of that sno we had of the winter. it will melt more through the next several weeks as the peak summe time is now with us even the temperatures in the bay area ar backing down thanks to the return of the marine layer, a

deeper marine layer will push further inland through the rest of the night into early tomorro morning, and near normal temperatures for the fourth of july which means it will be warm, inland, but not crazy hot we will see a clear trend quickly inland, lingering clou cover along the coast and a cooling trend will continue towards the end of the workweek on friday. then we bounce back a little bit. switching perspectives, san jose has blue skies. santa clara valley temperatures stand at 89 degree , mid-70s in santa rosa but still upper 70s in concord and livermore . temperatures around the bay in the 60s, warm and ho weather we had over the weekend is now retreating down to norma levels. pretty normal july evening if you are headed to th giants game as they start the series against the seattle mariners, for >> at 6:45. temperatures aroun 60 degrees, coasting into the 50s as some of the cloud cover and fog is going to be spreadin towards oracle park into the late evening hours. futurecast shows fog spreading into the inland valleys by early tomorro morning. much more widespread than the fog we started off wit over the weekend. inland it

backs up quickly. along the coast you will have a tough time shaking fog for the next several days especially wednesday, thursday, and friday gray skies along the coast and even frat sentences go will hav a hard time looking for sunshine. temperatures tonight dropping into the lower and middle 50s. some of the warmest spot in the upper 50s and 60 degrees but normal stuff for th fourth of july morning and normal temperatures in the afternoon. low 60s on the coast a mix around the bay, 80 down the peninsula. upper 70s and lo 80s for the north bay with mid 80s in the santa clara valley and middle and upper 80s, with few low 90s in the east bay which is normally hot for independence day. san francisco, looks like you might have to contend with a bit of fog. cloud cover will be rollin in for the fireworks getting going at 9:30. i would anticipate some brightly illuminated cloud cover by the time the first fire goes off at 9:30. other parts of the bay area, wesley clear skies will prevail. concord, the fire begins at 9:00. mt. diablo

temperatures should be comfortable in the middle 60s. down and up pattern, we go down to friday then bounce back a little bit into the weekend. temperatures are going to run a few degrees below average for the rest of this week around th bay. near average temperatures in land, tomorrow, and then a few days of below normal temperatures, only new 70s, thursday and friday. we should be back to near normal temperatures once again by monday of next week. along the coast, there is that cloud cove that will be tough to shake through saturday. keep highs i the upper 50s in july. >> number on the fireworks forecast. >> we hope for the best. >> we will check in again tomorrow. last night you might have caught this, the first supermoo event of the year, san juan batista with a bright glowing moon rising over the ridge of the mountain. supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to

from every genre have been coming to this cramped office space in washington, d.c. to play stripped-down versions of their songs in front of dozens of staffers. >> the first thing i tell artists is that this is a real desk and a real office. >> all of those crutches and things that people use to be o stage and feel comfortable, the are all gone. >> reporter: musician bob boyla created it 15 years ago. bobby carter is one of the programs producers . >> what is the secret sauce? >> passion about music. it simple. we are not trying to bring in the biggest artists in the world, we are trying to bring in the ones that we care about. >> reporter: sure, the big artists show up here, but they share this space with up and coming musicians and singers. even the broadway cast of the iconic musical the lion king jammed out at the desk. >> reporter: singer laura gibson was tiny desks the first artist in 2008. royal and had
