our fires. part of this is because this area is a little bit drier, so our fuel, moistur and the grass is a little bit drier than the southern portion >> reporter: assistant chief chris bachman said they have extra crews working during peak hours. on our way to our first call of the night we spotted illegal fireworks shows going o along the highway. firefighters were able to put out the small fires by the time we arrived. this region has lots of dry, grassy areas, which has firefighters concerned about fires and injuries. weather conditions were somewhat favorable this july 4th. >> this nice, cool, kind of wet humid weather. it is a little bit windy, so if it does start it will still spread, but the humidity and the cool weather i definitely helping.

>> reporter: fire investigators were also busy patrolling and confiscating illegal fireworks. violators could face fines. onc we reached the 10:00 hour there were nine calls going at the same time in a 10-minute period >> what you see now with the number of calls running is pretty common with how they usually come in year after year you can stay at this pace unti usually about 11: 30, 12:00. >> we have been checking throug the night and in the past 20 minutes we got an update from them. they said they responded to almost 20 grass fires like this one in antioch, and that was just during the 9:00 hour. this in fireworks were definitely to blame for three o them and probably the cause of dozen more. yeah, it is really loud in the city tonight! that is what it looked like in the

mission district with some people holding roman candles in the middle of the street out in the open. fireworks set off a chorus of car alarms. there wer police cruisers doing patrols, but it is kind of like playing game of whack a mole. across th bay in san leandro, people took over east 14th street and broadmoor boulevard to create their own illegal fireworks block party combo and people ar not just staying in the neighborhoods anymore. in hayward they took over a shopping center. a parking lot on mission boulevard. okay, now for the legal stuff. the sanctioned events, the ones supposed to be going up, thousands of people crowded the san francisco waterfront, including people who traveled from other parts of the world t come see it. >> i live in a climate where i is 109 degrees temperature, and i said i'm getting out! so i came here! that is where i hav been for the past few days. rather than go home i wanted to

stay for the fireworks! >> we are from glasgow in scotland! we came for a holiday for my sister's 13th birthday! so we are coming to see san francisco and then going on a wee road trip down the coast! >> it is my first fourth of jul in the united states, so i came here with my friends. >> i am so glad they did not come all that way to be disappointed, because carl fog was there but he stayed pretty low, but high enough not to spoil the show. across the bay this was the 10th annual concord fireworks display taking place after a da filled with food, games, local vendors and a lot more. you probably wonder what goes into these shows and how they pull them off. we got a look behind the scenes at the livermore robinson park. james wolf designed the entire show. he uses 500 shells to create a sho that lasts about 20 minutes. >> so when this shell goes up,

skipping pyrotechnics altogether and going with this. light displays, like this one. this was at sutro tower. lauren toms says it is about celebrating more than just independence day. >> reporter: fireworks shows in san francisco have a bit of an obstructed view because of the fog, but at sutro tower, powerful lasers are creating a spectacle that can be seen for miles. the fog is part of the show. like many, raul velez is hitting the barbecue, but not i your average backyard. tonight he is at sutro tower celebratin 50 years of the iconic structure. >> for the most part sutro towe is just your average 977-foot tower on the west side of town. when it is doing its job, no on notices. >> reporter: but this week the goal is to notice it and

sky is the canvas. the light might be the paint, but carl is the artist. >> reporter: 12 boxes hold the most powerful lasers on the market. on independence day the team is staying true to the occasion with red, white and blue lights. >> i think we have the power to define what patriotism really means in america, so i am proud of this city. >> reporter: for velez it is a special affair. he hopes that not only san franciscans but anyone in the bay area can celebrate sutro tower as far as the eye can see. the laser installation will continue for five nights, one celebrating each decade of sutro tower. i'm told we will get to see just about every color of the rainbow, so keep your eyes on our humble sutro tower. what would you do if you were swimming in the ocean and huge shark swam right past you? i would be out of there, but a lot of people in florida said let's just hang out and watch.

people in florida at this beach found themselves in the middle of something that looked like it came from the movie jaws. do you see the fin? a shark got really close to swimmers yesterday at navarre beach in florida. you would think everybody would freak out and get out of there but most people stayed calm. some got ou of the water but others just turned around to watch the shark. back here on the west coast many people spent the fourth cooling off on ski slopes. this was the last hurrah for palisades tahoe. looks fun, right? but this is what you had to go through to get there! a mile-long trudge through the mud! not as fun! as you can see the snow runs out well before the lifts actually begin. once they finally got a lift, just about everybody opted for short

the next few days. lots of low cloud cover and fog. a great start for most of the bay area. we should see fog backing up t the coast by midday. below average high temperatures by tomorrow, a trend that will continue through the end of the workweek, then we get a bit of warm-up by early next week. if you are just wanting it to feel like july, we have good news down the line. a six to 10 day outlook which goes beyond the seven-day forecast shows a tren towards normal or slightly abov normal temperatures. there is n excessive, extreme heat in store, so now we return to the heat done we had over the weekend. that is good news. tha is a little bit too much. we will see improving air quality and still a mix of green and yellow dots indicating good and moderate air quality. then it i good air quality across the board by thursday, friday and saturday. that is usually the pattern whenever we see cooler than average temperatures in th month of july. looking to the north this is the view we had o fireworks earlier. current

conditions running in the 50s for most of the bay area. we are seeing some of the low clou cover and fog, but again, the lack of weight in the atmospher allows the marine layer to expand. the clouds spread out as we head towards early tomorrow morning, then back out of the inland valleys quickly. along the coast i would not count on much of a break in the cloud cover. you will see gray skies not just tomorrow but for the next several days. temperatures tonight drop-down from where we currently stand, mostly in the 50s to begin the day tomorrow. highs are below average. we will be about two t four degrees below normal for oakland, san francisco and san jose . let's zoom in for a closer look. only upper 50s wit the gray skies overhead. in the south end of the bay we have a mix in the santa clara valley.

even below average temperatures are pretty comfortable this tim of year. we don't complain abou that. just the warmest spots east of mount diablo are reaching into the mid-80s aroun brentwood. low 60s in san francisco, mid-to-upper 60s in oakland and the east bay with temperatures further north reaching into the low 70s. the further north you go, temperatures are likely to stil be on the toasty side. temperatures do not drop much i san francisco in oakland but w do bounce back to near normal highs but monday and tuesday of next week. that means mid-to-upper 60s with low to mi 70s for oakland. temperatures further inland have a little more variation. we have a stretch of highs in the 70s which is well below normal for this time of year. inland spots are mainly back too low to mid 80s with inland parts of the east bay back to around 90 degrees by next tuesday. no suc huge climb right along the coast, but backup of 60 degrees is bonus territory for this tim of year. for the first time we get to welcome matt lively to the late show! thank you very much, paul! ahead in sports, the giants hosted 37,003 fourth of july

now back to fourth of july coverage. what is wrong with this tweet from the san francisco district attorney's office? look closely at the two flags in the middle. they are not american flags. that is actually the flag of liberia. there is just one star instead of our usual 50. but the d.a.s office was not the only one to make that mistake. so did the republican national committee. gop twitter. they eventually deleted it after getting roaste online. a fourth of july parade in santa cruz county has made an interesting name for itself. it bills itself as the very shortest, and it has been a tradition since 1961. the entire parade route spends half a mile, but that does not stop people from showing up every year. local entertainment, community clubs and marching bands made their way down the street. everybody was home in time to take a nap before the fireworks. afterwards there was no shortage of larger parades across the bay area today from san jose to danville and porto
