fireworks lit up the sky above the big apple tuesday. the fourth of july tradition went off without a hitch hours after heavy storms postponed another holiday staple -- nathan's famous hotdog eating contest. >> there's too much of a lightning risk -- >> reporter: a lightning strike sent one person to the hospital on coney island. downpours down south made for treacherous driving. as people celebrating in the nations's capital braved humidity that peaked at 94%. >> it's very humid. very hot. >> reporter: cancelations and delays piled up at denver international airport where lavonne fitzgerald spent the holiday, though hopefully she's not here to celebrate another milestone. >> i'm celebrating my 60th birthday tomorrow. >> reporter: wow. >> i just hope there's not any more delays. >> reporter: on the roads, aaa is expecting more than 43 million drivers during the holiday week. gas prices are about four cents cheaper nationally than a week ago, and nearly $1.30 less a

gallon on average than july 4th of last year. >> i filled my gas up and feel great and spent under $50. i'm feeling happy. >> reporter: experts say those heading home from holiday travel should plan ahead and leave early. also according to aaa, the best time to travel today is before 2:00 p.m. the worst time is between 3:00 and 6:00 p.m. at that point i feel like you should stay at the beach or wherever you are and enjoy a little bit more time because the traffic is going to be a mess. >> that sounds like a better plan to me for sur. jarred hill in new york. thanks. >> reporter: no problem. shark attacks on the fourth of july sounds like the plot of "jaws." two more shark bites happened off the beaches of long island. lilia luciano reports on how beachgoers should beware. >> reporter: two more shark attacks on long island. the fourth in two days. in separate incidents a man and a woman were bit near fire island just a few miles from

where two teens were bitten. none of the injuries are let threatening. drone video shows a school of about 50 sand sharks in the same area. >> very, very concerned. and if i'm that concerned, i won't go in the water. >> reporter: now officials have increased drone patrols over long island state beaches which had its fair share of shark bites last year -- eight in total. so far there have been at least 17 reported shark incidents in the u.s. this year. >> every year people think that the number of bites are higher than they remember, but in fact it's not at all. >> reporter: on the east coast bites tend to happen when sharks are chasing schooling fish, something swimmers should be on the lookout for. so the sharks aren't targeting humans. >> not at all. no. if sharks were targeting humans, we'd have at least 100 bites every day. >> reporter: beachgoers rushed ashore in pensacola tuesday as a shark zipped through shallow waters. >> come in! >> get out of the water! >> reporter: while nailer says

there are ways to prevent being bit like staying close to shore he adds there are greater risks while in the water. >> you're about 200 times more likely to drown than you are to be bitten by a shark. in south carolina authorities are investigating a deadly alligator attack. a 69-year-old woman was killed yesterday while walking her dog near a golf course lagoon on hilton head island. rescue efforts were delayed when the gator appeared to be guarding the woman. it was later removed. the dog was found safe. the secret service is investigating how a bag of suspicious white powder believed to be cocaine ended up in the white house. two law enforcement officials say it was discovered during a routine check sunday in a common area of the west wing accessible to tour groups. a preliminary test indicates it's cocaine. the white house was briefly evacuated after the powder was found. president biden and his family were at camp david at the time.

july 4th holiday celebrations turned violent in different parts of the country. in camden, new jersey, one person was shot and wounded last night during the end of a fireworks show. three others were injured running away. two people were arrested. and three people were killed and eight others injured in fort worth, texas, late monday night. police say several men fired indiscriminately into a crowd following a holiday festival. no one has been arrested. as we mentioned, severe storms brought chaos to nathan's famous fourth of july hotdog eating contest at coney island. rain and thunder rolled in just before the men's competition. luckily organizers were eventually able to regroup. cbs' astrid martinez was there. we have to -- there's too much of a lightning risk. >> reporter: boos rang out as thousands braving storms in brooklyn learned the men's division of nathan's hotdog

[ cheers ] >> reporter: and he won again, stuffing down 62 hotdogs in ten minutes. the dog-eat-dog competition broadcast on espn. he's relishing his victory after the day's weather woes, but a world record it was not. missing that high 76 mark by 14 wieners and buns. the contest to determine who is top dog is a holiday tradition taking place on the fourth of july for the last five decades. the boardwalk weather was better for mick i sudo who wolfed down 39 1/2 dogs to win the women's division. her tenth championship. >> i feel like this is a

a fire in washington state is threatening homes, and a judge's decision in a first amendment case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" reports a federal judge limited contact between the biden administration and social media sites. the preliminary injunction blocks some federal agencies from communicating with social media companies in an effort to block or remove content containing protected free speech. it was in response to a lawsuit brought by the republican attorneys general in louisiana and missouri. they said the government went too far trying to convince social media sites to address posts that could have caused vaccine hesitancy during the pandemic or affect elections. the "new york post" reports on the deadly shooting of an indiana police sergeant during a struggle at a hospital. authorities say sergeant heather glenn was killed monday during a confrontation with a domestic violence suspect at an area hospital. police say glenn tried to subdue the suspect, but it did not work.
