this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> breaking news, right off the top, starting in the past hour, two fires separate parts of the bay area, we have word a mandatory evacuation is a response. we will let you know what our news team is finding out. plus, 14 people hurt in shootings in hayward, we are in the neighborhood looking at what police are looking at. and why police brought out riot gear in san francisco and what was left behind after the chaos. plus, if a bill passes, you might be paying more to cross bay area bridges, all to keep part from going off of a

fiscal cliff. let's get right to our top story, the fire burning in napa county and the word of evacuations. our chopper is over the scene right now, this is a much improved picture from what we showed you earlier, a burn scar, and that means that the firefighters went out there and did what they are trained to do , but there were some tense moments. just minutes ago. this is bensville road in napa county, the evacuations are still in effect in the area of montesinos boulevard east from montevista drive, that is about 15 acres that were burned. as you can imagine, there are still some hotspots, that is why you can see the smoke . let's go back in time and show you what we have been looking at in the newsroom, time-lapse video right here. big billows of smoke, it is being pushed by the wind, this is from one of thwildfire cameras , that we

have the abtolook through. this is a closer look. it is just eaof the fairgrounds. the evacuation zone near lakeview park, from montecito boulevard to montevistacourt, also along oak grove way. things could change, if it changes during this broadcast, we will let you know. meanwhile, contra costa county fire busy last night 's bonding two fires and they believe fireworks are to blame, including what you see on your screen, a massive house fire in antioch, this is over the corner of eighth street and d streets. neighbors say they heard the noise , and some of the flames were seen coming up from under windows and doors as firefighters worked to get a handle on the fires. one homeowner says he is lucky he and his wife got out safely. >> i got up to see , i opened

these two back doors, one leads to the laundry room, and i was going to see what it was, then i saw the flames and smoke. i closed the door and woke up my wife and we grabbed the dogs and that was it. >> fire officials are investigating, they think it might have started in the detached garage between the homes and spread from there. the alameda county sheriff's office said they confiscated more than 400 pounds of illegal fireworks last night. when you look at this and you know they are all illegal, you know they were seized last night, the fireworks were turned over to the explosive ordnance disposal unit. another big story we are following, a violent holiday in hayward, police were called to several bloody scenes. six people were shot at one scene alone. >> they just released details

in the past hour, that mass shooting is in addition to at least two separate homicides overnight, 14 people were shot over the past 36 hours in that city. the police chief calling the violence unprecedented. here is a look at the scene. this is on rinker place during a large gathering on the street just after 10:00. a fight broke out, then gunfire, there may have been several shooters including one who was shot and critically injured. that person is still in the hospital. several other shooters may be on the loose according to police. this was the scene today, the investigation continues. we talked with one neighbor, the owner of jd decorations and she spoke in spanish about her feelings. she said she happened to see s on shootings, she says it is hard feel safe in any

parts of the city, even in your own home. hayward police working on a homicide investigation where a man was found stabbed to death and in a sideshow gathering last night, three people were shot and two people were injured by a vehicle that was in the area of miami avenue and florida street, one of the people who were shot did die at the hospital and nobody is in custody. police don't believe that any of this is related. crazy night, and i'm sure there will be much more to come on this. thank you. a violent holiday weekend in the united states, a nonprofit group, the gun violence archives says there were 22 mass shootings across the country including hayward. they have been tracking this since friday evening until this morning and that is the numbers. authorities in sacramento have arrested a man they say is responsible for stabbing a woman at a soccer game at levi's stadium this weekend. this is alejandro garcia-villanueva, arrested yesterday. he stabbed the woman during the gold cup game sunday between mexico and qatar. he

has been booked into jail and is waiting to be formally charged. a person of interest was found to have not committed a crime and was let go. look at this, people on the run, that was the scene in san francisco's mission neighborhood last night. they declared an unlawful assembly around midnight, and this is over near 25th street near garfield park. dozens of officers in riot gear used rubber ball rifles to make the crowd leave. that group had been setting off fireworks and holding sideshows. well, this is now by sunrise, the street crews were out there working hard to clean up this morning. one number said the police presence kept vandals from getting worse. >> there were a ton of officers on the street. there were police cars , i think that minimized some of the vandalism that has happened in the past. >> we are trying to find the answer to this, were there any arrests made after this

sideshow and assembly? so far it looks like there were no arrests. the state senator, scott weiner is working on further increasing bridge tolls to help pay for bart. this bill is known as sb 532, it had its first hearing today. it would raise the fare on the five state owned bay area bridges by $1.50 for the next 5 years, but it faces pushback from the bay area council. they represent more than 325 businesses across the bay area and they say, for we can support new taxes or tolls or fees to support transit, we need to see the agencies do the hard work to make their systems safer, more cost-effective and more seamless. they add that data shows these increased fees disproportionately affect people with lower income, less education, and people of color. they cannot support a bill that puts more of a burden on them. you can see right behind

me, more bears are showing up in people's backyards. most recently, a pair was spotted around the national seashore, so we followed an expert around to see what they might be looking for. >> reporter: home security cameras capturing at least one american black bear roaming through neighborhoods from canfield to parts of san rafael in fairfax. >> to me, bears are so mythical and interesting. >> reporter: a self-proclaimed wildlife geek set up cameras , as a field researcher from the river otter oncology project from the watershed. last july, he couldn't believe what showed up. >> it was right over there. and it looked like , oh, my god, is that a bear? >> reporter: it wasn't just one but two cubs frolicking and waiting in the cold creek. they search for pawprints and scat to test for dna.

california fish and wildlife estimates the population has tripled since the early 80s. >> as it is growing, they are being pushed out further, they need to find open space. here is more open space that doesn't have many bears yet. >> reporter: one resident spotted despair in early june, another homeowner in lucas valley was stunned to see this in her backyard. the marin humane society and wild care asking residents to contact them if of their visits again. >> it appears that the bear is doing exactly what we had hoped he would do, which is move away from the populated areas of marin county. that was our biggest concern. >> reporter: to keep humans safe, experts say not to bait them by beating out food or making it easy for them to access trash. >> if a bear shows up and it looks like it is thirsty, you put some water out for it, i know your intentions are good,

but it could be the end of that bear. >> reporter: they are using the watershed as a part of the range and they are helping to educate the residents that live in the wild land interface. >> it's all about trying to figure out how to keep them safe and away from temptation. >> reporter: the proliferation of cameras is documenting more sightings, since last year, the two cubs playing in the creek haven't been back to the same spot. but, they are curious about what might come next. >> hopefully, they can manifest themselves here without it becoming this scary story. >> reporter: for now, he can only wait until the next sighting, wherever that might be. so if you see a bear, the most important thing to remember is this, stay calm, avoid running , just back away slowly, listen to your intuition and encourage it to move along. use the clapping

let's talk about your money, one stock that did have a very good day was meta, the company in the bay area reached an 18 month high ahead of its launch of threads that is happening tomorrow. today you can preorder in the app store, this is what it looks like. the company describes the social media app as instagram's text based conversation apps. one expert said it might be hard to get users to try it out. >> instagram is an incredibly different vibe than twitter. instagram is a place where we post pictures of our kids and vacations and the latest meals that we've cooked, which is different, it is kind of a cozy place for people to share idealized images. twitter is a place where people talk about tough issues. >> did they see an opening with what is going on with twitter?

elon musk and twitter are limiting the number of tweets users can read every day. the app also announced they will soon be charging for a tweet deck which is also new. artificial intelligence is now helping to identify wildfires, they are used in the grass valley emergency command center, it is connected to the wildland cameras. if the smoke is detected, a little red box appears on the camera and the computers are helping to generate immediate predictions on where those might head once those little red boxes pop up. they use technology that inputs topography and wind speeds. >> to know this is exactly where the fire is right now and this is the direction it is going is extremely eye-opening, it is truly a game changer. >> last year, we can tell you cal fire started using drones to drop these pellets to setback fires in areas that

are too dangerous for firefighters to get to. they use the drones to drop those pellets. this is a look one more time at what was a fire that was burning in napa county. on the top right hand of your screen , a lot of firefighters out there serving the communities. again, this is at holmes mill road and jax lane, you can see the burn scar and some hotspots. this is near silverado middle school. evacuations are still in place , at montecito boulevard east from montevista drive. time for a look at the forecast, paul heggen is looking at the time lapse of that fire. it doesn't look like they are having quite as much wind up there. >> not nearly as much smoke coming off the fire, which is good news in terms of the spread of the fire and air quality in the region. there still some smoke coming off of it, this is the view from

sugarloaf ridge , keeping an eye on all perspectives around california, looking for these fires. most of that smoke is coming from the middle of that burned area. still smoldering in producing smoke , but firefighters have this one in hand. the wind around it is up to 20 miles per hour, but the wind is onshore, which means cooler temperatures and that means the humidity levels are nearly as low as they could be in early july. the onshore wind will continue with a parade of ripples in the upper levels of the atmosphere swinging through over the next several days. we are going to be on the cool side all the way through the weekend so the onshore breeze will continue and a relatively low fire threat continues into the weekend as well. farther down the line, we returned to above average temperatures, that is in the forecast from the climate prediction center and the 8 to 14 day look shows stronger wind and higher

temperatures. we had a few spots that were moderate, just barely today. the east bay in the south end of the bay and the santa clara valley, but we should be in the green, good air quality all the way through the weekend. looking outside right now, this is from the hotel surrounded by clouds, 61 degrees the temperature in san francisco, 68 degrees in oakland. santa rosa has been cool throughout the day. mid to upper 70s for other spots once the fog did retreat. heading out to the giants game this evening? they are trying to finish off their series with at least one win. game time is just after 6:00, it's going to be right around 60 degrees. the trumpeters temperatures will be dropping off, it'll feel colder than what the numbers say. picture you layer up. let's take a look at the futurecast, with the fog really spreading out. a lot of

fog to start the day tomorrow, but around the bay is going to be tough to shake until early afternoon and along the coast you will not see any significant clearing . temperatures tonight dropping down into the 50s across the board, low to mid 50s thursday and highs tomorrow well below average. mid 60s around the bay, upper 60s along the coast and temperatures only in the 70s even the warmest spots staying below 80 degrees around antioch and brentwood. the temperatures will warm up next week so you have to wait a little bit if you wanted to feel like july. but monday and tuesday we are getting back to near normal temperatures and even above normal temperatures by tuesday. a lot of upper 80s for some of the hottest spots especially for the east bay, returning to the low to mid 90s and along the coast, you will hit the low to mid 60s. thank you. coming up, we will introduce you to some

this is your show, the 3:00 broadcast, the community broadcast. because of that, we like to highlight and celebrate bridge builders in the community. a group of women are working hard to provide food and water every single day to their neighborhood , their neighbors who don't have a permanent place to call home. >> reporter: kelly mckinley is cooking dinner for at least 30

people tonight, who will show up, she never knows. >> we have kindness with no judgment, and it's really working. >> reporter: she cooks for her residence twice a week, because she has the time to do so and clearly a heart that calls her to help her neighbors in small ways she can. >> i can feed 12 people for $10, then i found out i can feed the same amount of people sandwiches as well for five dollars. it started growing bigger, but all this food today was completely donated. >> reporter: it started a year and a half ago, an effort to use perfectly good food that she saw was going to go to waste, she put her idea on social media pages and other respite residents responded to her post. they preheated -- created this nonprofit. >> just getting out there and doing what we can. >> reporter: it takes a village, just for this one dinner tonight, kelly cooked with what others donated to her

just that day. >> one of our donors, she cooks once a week. >> reporter: she makes her rounds in concord, before heading to the park. her first stop, a woman's house who stood just started cooking. and one of the volunteers , she has cooked weekly since its inception. >> i do this every week because i can't, and i see what is going on in the world, and if you can make a little bit of a difference, then why don't you? and then my kids see it and then they talk about it. >> all these small gestures from so many different people is making a big impact. >> if it wasn't for these dinners, where would you be getting dinner from? >> i kind of rely on them , they do it for everyone. if it wasn't for them, they really got my back .

>> reporter: and it's not just food. on the menu , a hot meal, drinks, food for the next day , hygiene items and even food and supplies for the furry family members . >> i don't judge if they are having a bad day , or whatever they are going through in their life . if they don't want it, that is fine, but they come here because they want to and the community they are building , and the friendships, instead of living a very lonely and segregated life. >> reporter: the team provides strangers who are often left alone with a simple gift of being able to gather together around a shared meal. >> that story is on our
