and out of spokane international airport. what triggered it all. and coach lebron? why the nba star traded in his basketball shoes for a polo shirt and clipboard. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. gun violence has been erupting across the u.s. as america celebrated independence. as it stands, there have been more than 400 mass shootings this year. so far in july, 21 people have been shot dead, 124 more injured. that includes in philadelphia where we are learning more about the gunman accused of killing five people. he appeared in court yesterday. lilia luciano reports. >> reporter: officials in philadelphia say kimbrady carriker posted disturbing messages on social media and left a will at his house before going on a rampage monday evening. surveillance video shows the moment the suspect appears to open fire. >> so far as we know, this

defendant did not know any of the victims. there was no dispute between him and any of the victims. >> reporter: carriker was charged with five counts of first-degree murder and held without bail. after police say he carried an ar-15-style rifle and .9-millimeter ghost gun to the neighborhood and opened fire at random killing five. surveillance footage released appears to show the moment a gunman opened fire on a crowd in fort worth, texas, late monday night. 11 people were shot, three killed. police still have no motive and no suspects. >> my family is heartbroken. this shouldn't have happened. >> reporter: these are just two of about 20 mass shootings since the beginning of july. across the country there were six mass shootings killing at least five and injuring 41. >> i'm going to miss that beautiful smile. >> reporter: back in philly, family members and community leaders gathered to mourn. 31-year-old joseph wamah loved art.

>> i really love him, and the fact that you did this to us, like -- for your own agenda, for your own reason, it's pissing me off. >> reporter: the city of philadelphia filed a lawsuit against some of the biggest suppliers of ghost guns and ghost gun kits which describes at least one of the weapons that the shooter carried. the next hearing on the case is set for july 24th. lilia luciano, cbs news, philadelphia. breaking now, a bomb threat temporarily halted all flights at spokane international airport in washington state. it happened last night. an alaska airlines flight from atlanta to seattle was diverted to spokane. officials say the suspect made a direct threat to the safety of the aircraft. an unidentified man is in custody, and police units as well as a bomb squad were on the scene. no one was hurt, though. a suspect arrested near barack obama's home in washington is set to appear in court today. the feds have been trying to arrest taylor taranto for his

alleged part in the january 6th attack. he's facing four misdemeanor charges in that case. late yesterday federal prosecutors told the judge the 37-year-old learned obama's address from a social media post by donald trump. they allege trump posted what he claimed was obama's address on his truth social platform. the same day taranto was arrested near the home. they found guns, ammo, and a machete inside his van. >> it's very troubling. any time you have an individual who is focused on an event like january 6th who is in a vehicle, who has apparently the materials to make molotov cocktails and he's in close proximity to a former president. >> taranto is also accused of targeting democratic congressman jamie raskin, and he also allegedly made phone threats to house speaker kevin mccarthy's office last month. questions are mounting over how cocaine got into the white

house. it was discovered in an area frequented by visitors. it caused a temporary lockdown sunday after the secret service found it in the west wing. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the secret service is not ruling anybody out at this point. but officials do have a leading theory for why that small bag of cocaine was in the white house. the u.s. secret service is now leading the probe to find out how a small bag of cocaine got into the white house. >> the president thinks it's very important to get to the bottom of this. >> reporter: a senior law enforcement official says the substance was found sunday on the ground floor in a common area near the entry to the west wing. it's close it a set of storage cubbies where visitors leave cell phones during a tour. >> this is a heavily, heavily traveled to be more accurate area of the campus of the white house. >> reporter: investigators are trying to pull fingerprints off the bag. visitor logs and camera surveillance are also being searched as senior officials say

the leading theory is that someone on the tour may have left the bag of cocaine. the white house confirms there were west wing tours over the weekend. all visitors are vetted and go through security before coming to the grounds. >> not every camera is trained on everybody at every minute. there is a possibility that you may never determine who did this. >> reporter: gop presidential hopeful ron desantis joked about the incident on "outkicks" tomi lahren show. >> i think a lot of us believe that had the biden administration's been blowing it on a lot of fronts. i guess it's more literal than i had thought. >> reporter: the white house says staffers and secret service detailees are all subject to rigorous drug testing. now this brings up a bigger question among some about security at the white house. in fact, republican senator tom kotton who sits on the judiciary committee wrote a letter to the director of the secret service asking for his plan to correct any security flaws. >> pretty concerning. jarred hill in new york. thank you.

the u.s. military is accusing russia of using fighter jets to harass american air force drones flying over syria. the air force released video of the encounter. officials say the drones were conducting an operation against isis tactics, rather targets, when the russian planes drew close dropping flares in front of the drones. the drones had to take evasive maneuvers. the air force called it reckless behavior. and this morning, the area around europe's largest nuclear plant is on edge with ukraine and russia accusing each other of planning to attack the facility. right now it remains in vladimir putin's control. charlie d'agata reports. >> reporter: the specter of a nuclear disaster looms again. both sides warning of a catastrophic attack. president zelenskyy accuses russian troops of planting objects resembling explosives on top of reactor units. that follows russian claims ukraine is plotting to strike it

with missiles packed with nuclear material gathered from other facilities. neither side providing any evidence, and the nuclear watchdog, the iaea, said there's no visible indications of mines or explosives. residents in zaporizhzhia have become used to living in the shadow of the threat. drills are routinely held in the region for civilians. this time it feels different, says chairman of the regional council. >> it's obvious. for me it's completely obvious that they will try to do something. >> reporter: russia already stands accused of recent sabotage blamed for blowing up the nova kakhovka dam just last month, wiping out dozens of towns and villages. this young mother has withstood the worst of the war so far. a florida man is being called a hero after rescuing a trapped woman who drove her car into a fort lauderdale apartment complex swimming pool. witnesses say the driver crashed through a fence tuesday. they believe she accidentally pressed the gas pedal instead of the brakes. a resident jumped into the pool and got her out of the sinking car. she was not injured. crews later removed the car from the pool. a missing massachusetts woman was found trapped in mud, and a texas mass shooter made a court appearance. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the el paso times" reports the gunman who killed 23 people at a walmart in 2019 faced victims at his federal sentencing hearing as it began.

admitted white supremacist patrick crusius is set to receive multiple life sentences after pleading guilty to the racist attack that targeted hispanics. yesterday in court family members of the victims came face to face with the 24-year-old shooter. he could still face the death penalty if he's convicted on separate texas state charges. "the new york times" says a missing massachusetts woman was found stuck in the mud in a state park. 31-year-old emma tetewsky was missing for about a week until hikers heard her cries for help on monday. they called authorities when they could not reach her. police officers waded through the swampy area and pulled her from the mud. they say that she may have been trapped for three days. her mother did not want to appear on camera when she talked with cbs news boston. >> it's going to take a long time for her to heal physically and emotionally, but she is okay. it's miraculous that they found her.

>> officials say the woman was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. honda is recalling close to 125,000 vehicles because of possible brake issues. the five models affected include the civic, ridgeline, passport, pilot, and acura mdx from model years 2020 to 2023. the automaker says the issue is a loose fastener that could cause the brakes to fail. owners can bring the cars in to the honda dealership for a free inspection and repair. u.p.s. workers edge closer to a strike, and expect new changes at subway when you order your next meal. shanelle kaul has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: the three major indices fell wednesday after minutes from the fed's latest meeting revealed more interest rate hikes could be around the corner. the dow lost 129 points, the nasdaq was down by 25, and the s&p 500 lost 8 points.
