this is cbs news bay area with reed cowan. >> what is next for the damaged crew ship docked in san francisco, thousands of passengers wait for word as the coast guard takes a closer look. a threat of legal action as twitter and meta face-off, thank you for joining us. passengers are expected to depart san francisco today but we haven't heard when or if that is going to happen. first, the ruby princess cruise ship has to pass a safety inspection, the ship suffered some damage after hitting the doc yesterday. justin andrews reports from pier 27. >> reporter: thousands of

people have been sitting on the ship for more than 30 hours, that is how long they have been sitting here, the good news is that the coast guard we are told is on board, the cruise line says they are confident the ship to alaska will happen today but just imagine planning a cruise for 3 years and then you board the ship and you are stuck. that was the reality for marianne yesterday. >> well, i was certainly thinking about how the titanic has been in the news lately, so all of a sudden i didn't know anything about this until she told me . and i'm thinking, there is a hole in the boat? it feels a little iffy. >> reporter: it happened after the ship was pulling into pier 27 yesterday morning, the cruise line princess confirmed the ship crashed into the dock, thankfully nobody was hurt. we have this video , and it shows another perspective. it is up to the coast guard to determine whether it is fit to sail. we haven't heard from the

coast guard on this just yet but a couple of hours ago, we did hear from the cruise line princess in a statement, it says, it is in continued discussions with the coast guard regarding clearance for ruby princess to depart san francisco and while we are confident the ship will be clear to sail today, the time of the departure is still being finalized. we know the team is planning to give compensation to those who have been on board but obviously so many people are just waiting just so they can take sale. back over to you. in may, we got an up close look at the work of helping ships the size of skyscrapers navigate in and out of the san francisco bay. state and federal law requires a local pilot to take over from the captain to navigate the ships through sandbars in and out of the port. the typical workday involves climbing some of the

were searching, they recovered 53 firearms, 48 were in that room and 17 were ghost guns. they also say they recovered more than 1000 rounds of ammunition and a live grenade. >> i wanted to express my sincere condolences to the family of mr. mcdonald. the loss of a loved one is never easy and i understand it is especially difficult under the circumstances. >> mcdonald's roommate, 63-year-old, jos÷ martinez owned some of the weapons in the house, he is facing charges. an update on oaklands 911 technical issues, a slowdown in response started yesterday because of a power outage. now they say all phone lines are fully restored and they are working to restore the automated system that supports dispatch staff routing calls. they say all emergency calls are answered and appropriately dispatched for police, fire and medical services. if your call drops or if you end up getting a busy signal, they want you to hang up and call back but of course only if you have an emergency. a new guaranteed income

program is aimed at helping unhoused high school seniors in santa clara county, the $3 million program is set to launch in the summer of 2024, it'll give 50 students a monthly payment of $1200 to help with the transition to college or a career. they will have access to financial aid and peer mentors. >> does not only benefits the grant recipient, but also creates a legacy of prosperity for their children and future generations. >> an estimated 2500 students are unhoused. if this program works, they hope to expand it to help more students. the new social media site, threads has surpassed 7 million sign-ups, and twitter is threatening a lawsuit. twitter claims that meta stole trade secrets by hiring former employees to develop threads. but, nobody on the engineering team used to work at twitter. earlier today we asked a cyber security expert at san jose

state to weigh in on the threat of legal action. >> this is basically a confirmation that threads is a success because when they send that letter, it is basically shooting in the dark, it is like a blanket letter saying you hired people and you took the technology or the documentation of recruitment, there's nothing specific saying that we found this. well, we are telling you that and we are going to go after you if we find something. it is a distraction, they want to slow down their momentum. so they see a real threat. >> elon musk is not stopping the cease and desist on twitter, he wrote competition is fine, cheating is not. a mixed report on the job market, raising concerns about inflation. hiring is starting to slow down but last month the u.s. added 209,000 jobs.

wages are also up from this time last year at a slightly higher rate than inflation. >> it doesn't mean that the workers are ready to high-five each other in the sense of having won the battle against inflation, but it means that that balance has somewhat shifted back more favorably to the workers. >> economist believe the federal reserve will raise interest rates once again at the end of the month in another effort to further cool down inflation. still ahead, he is set to take the stage at stern grove, how lyle lovett is getting ready to play in san francisco. plus, wish granted for this young fan in oakland. plenty of sunshine out there on this friday afternoon as we look at the santa clara valley, the sunshine is breaking through finally, we will see if the cool weather is sticking around this weekend ,

>> good for him, it's going to be fun. and the weather is going to be perfect for all of the festivities on monday. >> hopefully the smoke will clear out because i know they have been dealing with that for a little bit. >> they had some drift down from canada, that should get blown out, and we are in for a pretty good week as well, just a persistent pattern. cooler temperatures along the coast and along the bay as well. but the inland temperatures are running 10 to 12 degrees below average throughout the weekend. the wind has been noticeable today. most of these sustained winds running in 15 to 20 mile-per-hour range . sfo is always one of the most windiest around the area. the wind is helping to improve our air quality or keep it in the good category. it'll stay good

as we had through the weekend, but some yellow dots on tuesday indicating moderate air quality in the east bay and santa clara valley, that is when the next heat dome will build and that weather pattern tends to trap urban pollution near the ground level. once the warm air returns, it is going to make itself at home. we are going to be on the edge of this pattern but still close enough to keep the temperatures above normal. it's going to be centered over the desert southwest, already a hot time of year for them and they are going to be really cooking over the next couple of weeks. outside right now, gray skies and the breeze is shaking the camera. temperatures are cool pretty much everywhere except santa rosa, you made it all the way up to 80 degrees today. oakland just a few degrees warmer, other inland temperatures are hovering around 70 after that cloud cover was very widespread and persistent this morning. if you are heading out to the giants game this evening, the temperature should warm up another degree or two, thanks to the sunshine breaking through the clouds.

temperatures are going to drop down through the 50s as the giants take on the rockies. low cloud cover and fog is going to be out there, not as widespread for the northern half of the bay area to begin the day on saturday. it will be backing up to the coast around noon. along the coast, you might see some clearing this weekend but still a lot more cloud cover. temperatures tonight dropping down to the low to mid 50s, hies are going to be well below normal especially inland where the warmest spots are barely going to crack 80 degrees. 60s in the bay . if you are heading out to the alameda county fair, the last weekend, temperatures are going to be 10 to 12 degrees below normal in pleasanton, only reaching the low 70s but it is comfortable if you are going to be out. temperatures do warm-up next week , it'll be a modest warm-up around the bay but enough for above average temperatures continuing through next friday. temperatures climb to the mid to upper 80s

running a marathon is a major achievement, but for the man you are about to meet, it was much more for him. it was about making friends in the most unlikely places. >> reporter: two hours into his fourth marathon, timothy knows his mind is about to start playing tricks on his body. >> my brain is telling me to stop, i like that challenge, it drives me to keep going. >> reporter: with a rotating group of friends running parts of the race with him, this is his toughest and longest marathon so far.

>> i'm doing an inventory right now with my body, how it's feeling, how my legs are feeling. >> reporter: he isn't running for bragging rights, he is running to help the family of a friend who died unexpectedly. people have pledged donations for every mile he runs , which is why today, he's going for an ultramarathon. 31 miles instead of the traditional 26.2. but, what makes his marathon different than any other, isn't so much why he's running, but for whom and where. his friend, alberto was a correctional officer at salinas valley state prison. where he is serving 15 years to life for second-degree murder. those 31 miles , he is running them in the prison yard. 106 laps , with staff and fellow inmates cheering him on. it all started a few years ago when

he got into a heated argument with regard, the officer intervened and was able to diffuse the situation. that saved him from potential punishment, it was an act of kindness that sparked a rare friendship between an officer and inmate. >> when i see him in the morning, he tells me good morning, just like two men talking, not like an officer to an inmate, it was two men who built a relationship. >> reporter: but in 2018, the officer was suddenly killed in a car crash and the news hit him hard. >> my son is a teenager now, so i just feel like it has to be tough losing your dad. >> reporter: to deal with the loss, he began running, that is when he came up with an idea to channel his grief into something positive. >> i have always been a selfish person, and now i feel like i'm doing something that is selfless. >> reporter:'s goal is to raise

$5000 from prison guards and staff. >> you know, it sparked something in him to be better. >> reporter: salinas valley associate warden says a run like this would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, but since 2019, this maximum-security prison has been trying to insert more humanity into its facility in an effort to reduce violence. still, seeing an inmate raise money for the family of a correctional officer was unexpected to say the least. >> i have never seen anything like that. >> reporter: after five hours and 53 minutes, gridley crosses the finish line , far exceeding his goal. >> it just means a lot. it's special , this is the best thing i've ever done in my life for sure. >> reporter: raising funds for a good cause. while finding a bit of freedom behind bars.
