news bay area. >> hi. i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. the good news for the thousands of passengers who have been sitting at pier 27 for a day and a half, their alaska cruise is still a go. the bad news, they won't see enough of alaska because they aren't setting sail until sunday as work continues to fix a hole in the hull left by the ship's close encounter with the dock yesterday morning. so the original ten-day itinerary included four stops in alaska. the revised seven-day itinerary leaves only one 12-hour stop in ketchikan before the ship heads back down the british columbia coast towards san francisco. our betty yu has been following all of the details of the itinerary and the passengers who are making the most out of going nowhere. >> reporter: passengers are now going into their second night on the ruby princess docked at pier 27 just over my shoulder. i spoke with one

passenger who says this is his first post pandemic cruise and will be his first time seeing alaska, should he choose to stay on this ship. performers entertained cruise ship passengers aboard the ruby princess friday night. bleacher dave, as he's better known, snapped these photos of people enjoying the pool and socializing in the last 24 hours on a ship that was supposed to depart for alaska thursday afternoon. the collision happened earlier that day on arrival. the ship now carrying 3,200 new passengers has to remain docked until repairs are made and inspected by the u.s. coast guard. the ruby princess is now expected to leave three days after its original departure time. what was your first reaction when you found out you're not leaving till sunday at 4:00? >> the first thing i thought sunday at 4:00 was get me off of this thing because we live in oakland. >> reporter: guests can choose to leave for a full refund. if they stay, they will get a 75%
11:03 pm
refund. both options come with discounts for future trips. princess cruises will shorten the trip from ten days to seven. bleacher dave said the cruise line is giving passengers until 11 a.m. sunday to decide. >> yeah, i've enjoyed the buffet, have a specialty dining at the italian restaurant set up for tomorrow. mani pedi set up. so it just matters if we can get some discounts, we're likely to stay on. >> reporter: he said the mood is generally celebratory. he and his wife enjoyed playing games and doing activities on the ship friday afternoon. >> just doing martini demonstrations. you get a free martini. you know, of course, i'll work the free martini, betty. >> reporter: he has no complaints about the beautiful weather and view and strong wi-fi. there's no shortage of things to do. >> people are in good cheer.
11:04 pm
the lounges are packed. there's been movies. there's been entertainment. there's jokes, comedians. >> reporter: though bleacher dave said princess cruises was not entirely transparent about the collision before they boarded the ship, the captain has been very good about giving frequent updates. >> and bleacher dave as well. princess offered to refund passengers for things like unused shore excursions and airline change fees. tonight the 911 response system back up and running after a power outage knocked it offline. an alameda county grand jury recently sent out a warning it could fail. andrea nakano reports it's just the latest problem to plague a dispatch center known for having one of the slowest response times in the state. >> it makes me feel unsafe, yeah. >> reporter: paul williams and his family recently moved from the east coast. he wasn't surprised to hear about oakland's 911 system being shut down due to a power outage. according to city council member dan kalb, it took about ten minutes to get the system

back online and routed through the alameda county sheriff's department's dispatch center. the president of the oakland police officers association says response times were impacted as dispatchers continue to have trouble communicating electronically with officers out in the field. >> dispatchers are toiling literally with papers and pen writing down individual calls, running across the room giving it to the dispatcher and then sending it out to the officers in the field. >> reporter: the city's i.t. department had everything back up and running by 5:00 friday afternoon. earlier the police officers association said it has little confidence in mayor sheng thao's administration after its "inept response to february's ransomware attack." >> the same folks in i.t. who gave us the ransomware and there was terrible response to it are the ones responding to this. so just inherently we have little confidence in them actually getting it fixed. >> reporter: the ransomware

attack forced the city administrator to declare a state of emergency after network outages. troves of network employees and residents were released on the so-called dark web. williams feels there's a lot more to be concerned about than the failure of the 911 system. >> it sounds weird to say this, but oakland has so many other like infrastructure problems that it almost is like not the highest on my list. >> reporter: city council member dan kalb admits there are issues to addressed, one directly linked to the 911 system being the slow response times. >> the wait times we've had with our 911 system have not been as short as they should be. >> reporter: it's such a concern that council member kalb recently submitted a budget directive to look at issues, such as the city's recruitment policy and retention bonuses for dispatchers. >> it's not because we're not trying. it's because it's been a challenge to hire enough of our dispatchers on a regular
11:07 pm
basis and to retain them. >> reporter: the city says it is looking into what happened. it hopes to prevent incidents like this one from happening in the future. >> the city did not address the police union's criticism directly but inside a statement, "work continues to resolve the contributing factors of this incident and to reinforce the systems that support emergency dispatch staff to prevent future incidents." oakland police hit the jackpot when they took down an underground casino this week. in addition to making four arrests, they found two handguns, an assault weapon, ammo, and stacks of cash at the site near 23rd and foothill. officers also seized several illegal casino gaming machines. in san jose police busted a guy accused of stealing nearly $140,000 worth of sunglasses. jamille lee is suspected in a series of thefts from macy's stores across the bay area. these tours they're tahoe are doing exactly what first responders do not want you to do right now with local rivers

running fast and full and tonight we've learned a san francisco woman died on the fourth of july after slipping and falling over a tahoe waterfall. this is a bird's eye view of the spot where the 25-year-old woman went over the 170-foot eagle falls. she hopped over a guardrail to dip her toes in the rushing river when the current swept her away. a search team found her body in a pool of water near a hiking path. >> this is one of the things i wanted to point out to them was hey, this is dangerous, you know. the water's moving extremely fast. >> i don't think it's a good time to kind of play around the rocks and stuff. it's great for pictures, videos, capturing the moments, but that's about it. >> first responders say the melt from the massive sierra snowpack is upping the danger this year. charles manson's follower leslie van houten could be out of prison within weeks after governor newsom said he'll no

so this looks like an ordinary underground utility vault, but what if i told yu that someone was caught living inside? so security cameras in los angeles just caught a man living in the space right below the city's japanese american national museum and the museum's head of security was pretty baffled. >> the night that i found the gentleman down here, he was a little shorter than i am and he was able to stand up completely down there. he said he sleeps down here and he drinks water from the spigot and this is his

driving supports more research. >> the more we look into how cannabis impacts driving, the better educated and equipped we are to deal with it and law enforcement is to deal with it. >> so the study got the green light from the state and the feds. it will be overseen by scientists from the uc san diego center for medical cannabis research. now it's time to go to paul heggen. you always have a good one. can you top that one? >> there's nothing i can say that won't get me in trouble. >> exactly. just safe driving on the roads, right? >> exactly. everybody just beware. let's look what's happening weatherwise and we'll both keep our jobs. looking out at san jose, clear skies, but we'll see low clouds and fog later tonight. it will be a cool weekend, temperatures about 5 to 10 degrees below average on a widespread basis. then we warm up monday, back to near average and then the warmth continues to build, suddenly above average temperatures tuesday. look at the roller coaster ride for concord, a good 10 degrees
11:16 pm
below average saturday and sunday, within 5 degrees of normal monday and a stretch of above average temperatures into the 90s, no extreme heat, but it's going to be toasty for inland parts of the bay area beginning tuesday continuing right through the following weekend. now there's some of the fog and low cloud cover hanging out over downtown, temperatures mostly 50s, very similar to the past few nights, 60 degrees the least cool spot now in san jose. the fog will be out there early tomorrow morning, make not as widespread or dense as this morning, but back up quickly out of the inland valleys taking longer to dissipate around the bay and along the coast get used to gray skies. they'll be with us a couple more days. as the inland warmth builds, i think we'll see more sun along the coast. temperatures tonight drop down to the low to mid-50s, not much variation underneath the deck of low clouds. temperatures tomorrow if you're heading out to the giants as they play game two of their series against the colorado rockies, hoping for a better result tomorrow, temperatures will be around 60 degrees at game time. it's

11:18 pm
beginning to show up, no record setting temperatures, no heat advisories in all likelihood and along the coast your temperatures should finally reach up into the mid-60s by the end of next week, but you've got a long gray time between now and then. >> thanks, paul. straight ahead in sports, day two of the u.s. women's open has a surprising leader at the top of the board. and the giants trying to keep the all-star break off their minds as they finish their final homestand and series of the first half.

>> no skydiving. >> yes. >> no watersports. i don't want you water skiing, something like that. the reason we say this is because come sunday evening 25 of the 26 giants, they'll be at the beach, the course and the mountains during the midsummer classic all-star break, but first before we get there, a final weekend series against the colorado rockies. giants legend and 2012 world series mvp pablo sandoval hanging at oracle park friday night, nice trip down memory lane, but the youth movement continued. fifth inning deep fly from brenton doyle, but luis matos makes the great grab. we head to the bottom of the sixth, giants down two, but brandon crawford tied up the game with one swing of the bat, sends this one into levi's landing. that's his first homer in 69 days, nice time for his bat to get hot. seventh inning tyler rogers entered the game after his brother taylor left two men on base. colorado had no love for the rogers bros. ezequiel tovar
