it's a dream come true. ♪ ♪ >> announcer: this is the "cbs weekend news" from chicago with adriana diaz. good evening. extreme dangerous weather has struck all over the country this summer and this weekend is no different. with millions enduring scorching temperatures and in some places brutal humidity. the worst may be yet to come. the national weather service says parts. west and southwest are experiencing a heatwave that could near or top records for both intensity and longevity. cbs's elise preston is in los angeles, leads us off. >> reporter: many people here in southern california are outside enjoying this break in the weather as another stifling heatwave is just days away. meanwhile, millions of others are suffering in triple-digit temperatures with no end in sight. >> it is hot and very draining.

>> reporter: in phoenix, there hasn't been a day cooler than 110 degrees this month. with excessive heat warnings expect today last through at least next week. adding to the danger, red flag warnings as this southwest braces for what could be yet another grueling record-breaking heatwave. what is driving this dangerous heat across the country? >> yeah, in a word, human-caused warming. you make the planet hotter, you get more frequent, intense, long lasting heatwaves. we should expect the unexpected. >> reporter: michael mann and other scientists warn kari lake could trigger monday devastating wildfires like the ones in canada that exposed millions to dangerous air. >> people could have a lingering cough for several weeks. >> reporter: to prevent even more extreme weather events, professor mann warns action is needed now. if things aren't done, what do you predict summers could look and feel like just five years from now?

>> reporter: in both a tribute to troops and bold faced defiance to russia, president volodymr zelenskyy posted an undated clip from snake island. he says, i want to thank from this place of victory each of our soldiers these 500 days. snake island, a symbol of audacious ukrainian insubordination after soldiers refused to surrender to the russian navy's flagship in the first few days of the invasion. that was later sunk. we will definitely win, he said in his video address. glory to ukraine. but winning looks a long way off as the war entered its 500th day. russian troops fired artillery into a residential neighborhood in the eastern city of lehmann, killing at least eight people, wounding several more. prosececutors in kharkiv have bn

republican candidate to have regular support in the double digits. >> natalie, thank you. here in chicago, police say they are investigating accusations of sexual misconduct by its officers against at least one migrant taking shelter at a police station. protesters called for transparency friday. sources tell cbs chicago the allegations involve as many as four officers. thousands of asylum seekers bussed from texas have stayed at police stations with city shelters overwhelmed. tonight there is a massive multi-state manhunt for an escaped prisoner in pennsylvania after a daring getaway. 34-year-old michael burnham is considered armed and dangerous. cbs's shanelle kaul has all the details. good evening. >> reporter: good evening. late this afternoon police described burnham as a very dangerous inmate with survivalist skills. they also say he is known to of

done things like this in the past. >> our focus right now is making sure we capture him as quickly as possible. >> reporter: lock the doors and stay alert. police in northwest pennsylvania and western new york are now on the hunt for 34-year-old michael burnham. his escape like a hollywood movie. pennsylvania authorities say he scaled exercise equipment and shimmied down bedsheets to shipped slippery out of warren county prison sometime overnight thursday. >> at this time we have no reason to believe that burnham has left the general area. >> reporter: he was last season wearing an orange and white striped jumpsuit, croc style issues and a squlal-issued blue denim jacket. his skills could complicate the search in rugged and steep terrain. >> he is a self-taught ser vieflist with military experience and could be holed up in a wooded area. >> reporter: he was being held on arson and burg lary charges

♪ finally tonight, it is an american original that has been relished for more than 85 years. but now it's rebranding and there are new drivers, too. cbs's kris van cleave met them in madison, wisconsin. >> about to drive the frank mobile. let's go. >> reporter: this is the very first time sam delotte has been given the keys to his new company car. it's not just any car. it's an american icon. a computer science major from purdue, one of 12 recent college grads who will crisscross the country as frankfurters, the lucky dogs behind the wheel of the oscar mayer mair frank mobile. >> i say this a dream come true. >> reporter: they beat out 2,000 other applicants to drive a 14,000 pound 11 foot tall 27 foot long hot dog. how is this thing to drive? >> i have never driven anything
