storm alerts are still up in some states, and we've got the latest. luxury homes swallowed by a massive landslide. the urgent warning from california by officials at this hour. and madonna breaking her silence. the health update she's giving fans after she was rushed to the hospital. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with millions of people under dangerous flood alerts this morning in the northeast, and it comes after torrential rains unleashed historic flash flooding in new york state and vermont. it washed out roads, forced evacuations, and killed one woman trying to leave her home in new york's hudson valley. dozens of people had to be rescued in vermont where 8 inches of rain fell since sunday. officials say it's the worst flooding the state has seen since tropical storm irene more than a decade ago.

>> we have not seen rain fall like this since irene, and in some places it will surpass even that. >> you can see how powerful it was. look what it did the all the -- you can see right where it went. it pushed all that debris wherever it could. >> meanwhile a dangerous heatwave is expected to intensify across the southwest this week. phoenix could break a nearly 50-year-old record with the most consecutive days at or above 110 des. degrees. we're seeing new images from the damage of a landslide in california. the ground in rolling hills estates began shifting on saturday. ten homes were actively moving. an additional 16 were being monitored. residents were given only 20 minutes to pack up and leave. since then several homes have slid down a hillside. >> i think it has moved another 20 feet from last night. >> these homes are gone. there's nothing to do to save

them, and they're moving every hour, and you can hear it and you can see it. >> authorities say the ground is still shifting and more homes are likely to collapse. geologists are trying to determine if this past winter's heavy rains played a role in the landslide. well, president biden is in lithuania where the nato summit gets underway today. he arrived on air force one yesterday after meeting with the british prime minister and king charles in london. the meeting of nato allies comes as turkey withdrew its objections with sweden becoming the 32nd member. tina kraus is in london with the latest. tina, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. sweden is set to become the 32nd country after finland became the 31st country back in april. it's a boost for president biden, who has touted nato's expansion as an example of how russia's invasion of ukraine has backfired on moscow. president biden began the day at

the presidential palace, meeting with lithuania's president ahead of the nato summit. world leaders head into the conference with new momentum after turkey dropped its objection with sweden joining nato. >> completing sweden's acceptance is historic at this time. >> reporter: it's a show of unity they're willing to demonstrate in the face of the war between russia and ukraine. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy says ukraine deserves to be part of the military alliance and is pressing nato to pave a clear path for its membership, but president biden says the war needs to end first or other countries risk being pulled into the conflict. the president and zelenskyy will meet one-on-one at the summit tomorrow.

president biden is still taking heat for his decision to provide ukraine with cluster bombs, which are outlawed by many of america's closest allies. the president called it a choice between supplying the weapons or leleledefenseless. the summit is expected to produce more promises of ammunitions and weapons to bolster kyiv's quest for victory. nato's secretary-general said ukraine will receive a strong and positive message from the alliance with a clear path toward future membership. the summit runs through tomorrow and president biden then travels to helsinki to celebrate finland's membership into the alliance. anne-marie? >> tina kraus in london. thank you so much, tina. ahead on "cbs mornings," we'll speak with secretary of state antony blinken. he's in lithuania with president biden, and he'll give us a preview of what we can expect from the high-stakes nato summit. an investigation is underway

to learn how disgraced sports doctor larry nassar was stabbed multiple times in prison. he's serving decades in prison for sexually assaulting hundreds of female athletes at michigan state university and several gymnasts. nassar was stabbed ten times in the back, neck, and chest by another inmate on sunday. he is in stable condition. a senate committee is set to hold a hearing today on a proposed deal between pga tour and saudi-backed liv golf. the controversial agreement was announced last month. they're expected to testify today. connecticut senator richard blumenthal says he wants to investigate the deal in light of saudi arabia's record. >> we're talking here about one of the most repressive murderous regimes in the world. they have killed journalists. they have jail and tortured disdebits. they have supported the war in

yemen and terrorist activities like 9/11. >> blumenthal says he wants to know what professional golf will look like under the new framework and what the saudi influence will be. well, the man who staged the failed revolt in russia met with vladimir putin. that's according to the kremlin. that's according to the kremlin. he and others were invited into moscow five days after the mutiny collapsed. his whereabouts are unclear. meantime we're getting a rare look inside a medical unit on the war in ukraine. our crews saw what one doctor said were the devastating impacts of russian cluster bombs similar to the controversial munitions the u.s. is now sending to ukrainian forces. some of the images that you're about to see are disturbing. charlie d'agata reports. >> reporter: an explosion just a few hundred yards away. it's part mass unit, part e.r. in a front line town.

medics provide life-saving care to casualties and get them to fully equipped hospitals hours away. then a number of smaller blasts. first to arrive, wounded soldiers. then more and in much worse shape. then come the civilian casualties. an elderly woman begs for help, but priority goes to the unresponsive patients in what's now become a battlefield triage. we are near the front lines but not on the front lines, and from the number of civilians we've seen coming in this morning and their injuries, this is clearly an attack on a civilian area. they keep coming until dr. alexi and his team are overwhelmed. cardiac arrest, shouts a medic. heart stopped for two minutes.

an investigation is underway to find out why a small plane crashed into a hangar at the long beach, california, airport. the single-engine cessna crashed nose first into the building yesterday. the faa said the pilot was practicing landings and takeoffs and was the only person on board. he had minor injuries. there are new details about last week's mass shooting in philadelphia, and the marines' new leadership is in limbo.

politico reports the leader of the u.s. marine corps stepped down with no senate confirmed successor in place. general david berger's four-year tour as top officer ended yesterday. general eric smith was nominated to take over, but alabama republican senator tommy tuberville has put a hold on all senior military operations. tuberville said it's because of the pentagon's funding for travel for service members to go out of state for abortion. smith will serve in an acting capacity. "the new york times" says that the first victim in last week's mass shooting in philadelphia was shot 44 hours earlier, according to police. 44-year-old kimbrady carriker allegedly began firing into a crowded street with an ar-15-style ruffle. four people were killed. a 31-year-old man was found dead in his home several hours after the mass shooting, but believe killed him the days before. officers were dispatched to the
