the sudden devastation up-ending people's lives. terror in the sky. a flight to florida rocked by severe turbulence leaving people injured. what a passenger is telling us at this hour. and top athletes honored at this year's espy awards. we've got the highlights and the special moment that made the audience misty eyed. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, the latest case of extreme weather. multiple tornados ripped through the chicago area. one touched down at o'hare international airport as travelers took shelter in a concourse. hundreds of flights in and out of o'hare and midway airports were disrupted. jarred hill is in new york with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: could you imagine -- one person said that they were already on the plane getting ready to go when the flight attendant rushed everybody off and into the airport for safety. meanwhile, you got folks in the west who are seeking shelter from something else -- this

incredible heat. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: a tornado spotted near chicago's o'hare international airport, one of several seen across the chicago area wednesday. >> all i saw was the tomorrow -- the tornado come straight down here, and debris started flying all over the place. >> reporter: the storms took out homes and knocked down trees, but fortunately spared lives. in the southwest, a different problem -- cooling centers are being set up around phoenix, the city gearing up for its 14th straight day of temperatures at or above 110 degrees. >> we pass out hygiene kits, cooling towels, hats. anything that we can give people to help them face the heat. >> even a half hour in this heat can change how our body's feeling, how we're performing. >> reporter: some of the warning signs of heatstroke -- dizziness, nausea, and confusion. the dangerously high temperatures are expected to spread to california next.

forecasters say l.a. county could hit up to 113 on friday. the scorching temperatures are already singeing crops further north in fresno. >> these grapes at this stage of the year should be plump and juicy and getting to peak ripeness. >> reporter: going back to arizona, phoenix is just a couple of days shy of the record for the most consecutive days at or above 110. right now that's set at 18 back in 1974. today again could be the 14th in this cycle, and the forecast does not show that city getting any cooler over the next week. >> going to be tough. jarred hill in new york. thank you. so severe weather also continues to pound the northeast. new flood alerts are in effect in vermont and parts of new york state as more thunderstorms threaten places where rivers and streams are already high. vermont's governor toured devastated areas yesterday with the head of fema. officials continue to assess the aftermath from historic floods that damaged thousands of homes and businesses and knocked out

power as well as roads and bridges. a search is under way in washington, d.c., for the driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run collision near the white house. authorities say uniformed secret service officers attempted to stop a vehicle with an expired registration yesterday. the driver sped away, ran a red light, and struck multiple people at an intersection. a 75-year-old man was killed, a 13-year-old girl suffered minor injuries. the ntsb is investigating a deadly greyhound bus crash in southern illinois. police say the bus crashed into three tractor-trailers parked alongside a highway rest area exit early yesterday morning. three people on the bus were killed, and 14 others were hurt. some were seriously injured, including the bus driver. video shows the side of the bus ripped open. a passenger and a man who was sleeping in his truck when the bus hit described what happened. >> front of me was a man stuck between the seats. like his whole body was folded.

>> i woke up in the air. my brain registered what i was doing, i was floating. >> it's illegal in illinois for trucks to park on exit ramps, but trucking industry experts say many drivers do it because overnight parking is hard to find. president biden is in finland where he's set to meet with the leaders of four nordic countries including sweden which is on track to join nato. mr. biden yesterday met with ukraine's president zelenskyy as the u.s. and other world leaders vow long-term military assistance in the country's war with russia. weijia jiang reports. [ chants ] >> reporter: president biden told a roaring crowd in lithuania that nato's commitment to ukraine will not weaken. >> we will not waver. >> reporter: and he assured ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy that military and financial aid would continue. >> i promise you, the united states is doing everything we can to get you what you need.

>> reporter: but nato has not provided a timeline for when ukraine would become a member, which zelenskyy called absurd in an angry tweet tuesday. after national security adviser jake sullivan said the american people deserve gratitude, zelenskyy's tone seemed to shift. >> give us huge support. i want to thank all americans. >> reporter: traveling to finland, president biden was asked how long ukraine would have to wait for membership. >> i think until the war's over. whether or not he's in nato now is not relevant as long as he has the commitment. >> reporter: and he does. the g7 announcing new long-term security guarantees including modern military equipment, training for ukrainian forces, and intelligence sharing. russia is warning the u.s. after its decision to send cluster munitions to ukraine, a controversial weapon banned by most of the world. the defense minister telling

reporters they have cluster bombs for all occasions. weijia jiang, cbs news, helsinki, finland. alabama republican senator tommy tuberville is increasingly under fire for holding up military promotions. he's placed a months' long block on pentagon appointments, objecting every time democrats try to approve promotions for generals and admirals. tuberville is demanding the defense secretary, lloyd austin, rescind a memo authorizing paid leave and transportation costs for service members to travel to states where abortion is legal. austin says the senator's actions are, quote, irresponsible and harm america's national security. fellow republicans including minority leader mitch mcconnell have criticized the hold. tuberville spoke with our david martin. >> reporter: what would it take for you to lift your hold on all these nominations? >> all they need to do is change it back to the way it was. >> reporter: aren't you dragging

the military into politics? >> i want to keep politics out of the military. it is ruining our military. >> tuberville's block has caused a backup of more than 250 military nominations. the fbi director, christopher wray, defended his agency during a contentious hearing on capitol hill. wray, who was nominated by then-president donald trump, appeared before the republican-led house judiciary committee yesterday. he faced criticism about the investigations into trump, president biden's son hunter, and claims the fbi encouraged social media companies to censor conservatives like this exchange with republican representative mike johnson. >> our focus is on the line foreign disinformation, that is foreign, hostile actors who engage in covert efforts to use our social media platforms which is something that is not seriously in dispute -- >> i have to stop you for time. >> that's not accurate. >> wray said the fbi is not in the business of moderating content.

what happened to a flight attendant when an allegiant air flight hit severe turbulence. two passengers and two flight attendants were hurt yesterday on a flight from north carolina to florida. flight aware says the plane dropped about 5,000 feet in less than two minutes. it landed normally and was able to taxi to the gate. there are new details about firefighters shot in alabama, and rudy giuliani faces a new lawsuit. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the atlanta journal-constitution" reports two former georgia poll workers are seeking sanctions against rudy giuliani for allegedly withholding evidence. the two former workers are suing the former attorney for donald trump for defamation. in a new motion filed this week, they contend giuliani failed to turn over evidence despite court orders to do so. they're asking a federal judge to hold giuliani liable for allegedly failing to preserve crucial evidence. the "associated press" says two alabama firefighters were seriously injured after being

shot at a fire station. it happened yesterday in birmingham shortly after they started their shift. police say the shooter entered the station through an open bay door in what they're calling a targeted attack. at least one of the firefighters was shot multiple times. >> our firefighters are there to protect and aid and rescue our citizens, and to see them be critically injured is very troubling, disheartening that that would happen in our community. >> no one has been arrested, and there's no word on a motive. and the "los angeles times" says renegade sea otter is terrorizing california surfers. for a month it's been terrorizing surfers off santa cruz. one said it bit down on a board last sunday and chewed off a piece. the otter can be identified by a blue tag on its webbing. witnesses say that the attacks have become increasingly aggressive in recent days.

a new report reveals inflation cooled for a 12th straight month, and a popular pizza chain is coming to uber eats. erica brown has your cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: the three major indices were up yesterday after new inflation data showed encouraging signs for the economy. the dow climbed 86 points. the nasdaq gained 158, and be the s&p 500 was up by 32 points. the key inflation data we're talking about is from the consumer price index. it revealed inflation is at its lowest level in over two years falling to 3% in june. shoppers may notice lower costs for airfare, used cars and trucks, and even grocery items like meats and poultry, but housing costs remain on the rise. farmers insurance says it will end coverage in florida, no longer offering home, auto, and umbrella policies in the state. this comes after three major insurers pulled out of the hurricane-prone state in the past year. a spokesman for the company said the decision was necessary to manage risk exposure.
