this as the south and west remain in the tight grip of an intense heatwave. we are tracking the latest. hollywood halted. actors now joining writers on the picket line. both unions striking for the first time in more than 60 years. what this means for your favorite tv shows and movies. and the powerball jackpot grows. the big prize in tomorrow night's drawing. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning tens of thousands of actors are joining writers in a strike against studios and streaming services. the union representing actors voted to strike after contract talks collapsed. it's the first time actors and writers have been on strike together in more than 60 years. it halts production across the entertainment industry that will delay tv shows and work on new movies. jarred hill is here in new york with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yeah, fall shows, new movies, even promotion for projects that

are about to hit the theaters, all halted at this point as actors are preparing to hit picket lines this morning. one of the biggest concerns is compensation in an industry that is quickly being reshaped by technology. > strike! [ cheers ] >> reporter: hollywood is now at a standstill. actors leaving premieres and productions to join writers on the picket lines. >> if we go on strike, we'll packck up and gogo home. >> reporteter: the casast of "oppenheheimer" left their premiere in london once the strike was announced. fran drescher, the president of s.a.g.-aftra, says the union is pushing studios to take into account major shifts in the business brought on by technology. >> to try and think that by just making incremental changes on a contract that was forged since 1960, before there was internet, before there was digital, is crazy. >> reporter: the main sticking points include increases in basic pay, higher residuals for

streaming content, and protection surrounding the use of ai. >> we're talking about the potential for them to be able to use our name, our likeness, our movements, our voice for future projects without our consent. >> reporter: the group representing studios and streaming services said in a statement, the move will, quote, deepen the financial hardship for thousands who depend on the industry. the economic fallout already being felt as work dries up for companies that rent equipment to make shows and movies. businesses just now bouncing back from the pandemic. >> the struggles for us during this is, you know, just making our rent, paying our bills. the camera equipment is extraordinarily expensive. >> reporter: the first strike of its kind in decades could impact the industry for years to come. now one reason that the union says those residual payments and higher pay are so important is because that's how actors earn enough to qualify for health care under s.a.g.-aftra.

something else of note is while s.a.g. does represent about 160,000 people including tv hosts and broadcast journalists, this walkout only applies to tv and film actors. >> thank you. new powerful storms are bearing down on the northeast, and that includes vermont where storms this week unleashed torrential rain triggering the worst flooding in nearly 100 years. authorities confirming yesterday a 63-year-old man died after a drowning accident. 115 million people are under intense heat alerts in the west and the south. roxana saberi reports. >> reporter: the city of lewisville in central mississippi is under a flash flood warning after more than a foot of rain fell in just four hours. >> my store is currently under water. >> reporter: some people needed to be rescued from their homes and their cars. the winston county sheriff's department said it saved at least four drivers. no deaths or serious injuries have been reported so far.

across a third of the country it was another day of record sweltering heat with more than 120 million americans under excessive heat alerts. in southern california, hot and dry conditions are fueling fires in riverside county. >> today's a busy day for cal fire riverside county fire department. going to be a busy season for these firefighters. >> reporter: near chicago's o'hare airport, a tornado touched down wednesday sending thousands of passengers scrambling for shelter and canceling hundreds of flights. residents are cleaning up after several other suspected twisters tore through nearby communities, damaging homes and uprooting trees. in mccook, illinois, a storm >> six out completely. the roof is completely gone. >> reporter: while owner brian patel was at a movie theater. >> seems like impossible. i hang my head right now. >> reporter: fortunately the guests were gone. >> must be very difficult -- >> it's a family business.

my kids, they born here, they grow up here. it's hard to see it -- it's destroyed. >> reporter: patel says he will rebuild, as will residents here in countryside, illinois. a tornado ripped off half the roof of the house behind me under that blue tarp, and now people here are cleaning up the uprooted trees and assessing the damage. roxana saberi, cbs news, countryside, illinois. we're learning new details about the search for murder suspect who escaped from a pennsylvania jail as the search enters its eighth day. yestery police showed a photo of a backpack they say they found wrapped in a tarp and concealed under a log in a wooded area near the jail. they believe the backpack, which contained clothing, food, and other items, belonged to 34-year-old michael burham. thoerths authorities say he used bed sheets to escape from the jail in warren county last week. >> analyzing the sightings and various information available to us leads me to believe we are absolutely focusing our search

in the correct area. >> the total reward for information leading to his capture is now $22,000. iowa's new ban on most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy could take effect today. republican governor kim reynolds says she will sign the bill today. it was approved by the state's republican-led state legislature tuesday. protesters descended on the state capitol during the one-day special session. a hearing on a challenge to the new law is scheduled for today before the governor's planned signing. and in a landmark decision, the fda approved the first over-the-counter birth control pill to be sold in the u.s. the daily pill called o-pill should be on store shelves by early next year. it's been available by prescription for 50 years. women's health advocates are hailing the decision, while groups such as the catholic medical association oppose it. >> i think having access to

birth control is really important for women, and this is another way to get easier access. >> the medication should not be over the counter. i think a doctor needs to be counseling and discussing this with patients if that's what the patient is choosing. >> the fda says the pill will be available to anyone of reproductive age without parental approval. this morning president biden is back in the u.s. after wrapping up his critical five-day trip to europe. mr. biden arrived at the white house last evening. hours earlier he met with his finnish counterpart after finland became the newest member of nato. the president touted the alliance's commitment to the long-term security of ukraine in its defense against russia. it comes as cbs news confirms that american cluster bombs have now arrived in ukraine. donald trump's son-in-law jared kushner testified before a federal grand jury investigating trump's alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

"the new york times" says kushner, who was also a senior adviser to trump while he was president, testified last month. he told a grand jury that it was his impression that trump truly believed the election was stolen according to a person briefed on the matter. the "times" says other witnesses testified that trump knew he lost the election. and it looks like that we may never know who brought cocaine into the white house. the secret service says that it closed its investigation into how a small bag of cocaine ended up in the west wing. it was found last week in an area where tour groups store their cell phones and other items. the fbi analysts examining the bag for traces of dna and fingerprints found no definitive results. the secret service briefed lawmakers yesterday. >> how can in the white house 24/7 security, they find cocaine but now they close the investigation?

penalty, and why a major hospital is being investigated. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "forbes" reports cedars-sinai hospital in los angeles is facing a federal civil rights investigation over its treatment of black mothers. it comes after the death of a black woman who died from internal bleeding in 2016 following a c-section at the hospital. her husband filed a lawsuit alleging that his wife's race played a role in her treatment and resulted in her death. cedars-sinai says that has long been concerned with national disparities in black maternal health. "the new york times" says a federal jury determined that the gunman who killed 11 people at a pittsburgh synagogue is eligible for the death penalty. 50-year-old robert bowers opened fire as members of three jewish congregations held sabbath services at the tree of life synagogue in 2018. he was convicted last month. his attorneys say mental illness led to the massacre, but jewish
