>> there are about eight to nine shots fired. >> another kid, it's ridiculous. i mean things are beyond out of hand. >> tonight parents say they can't live like this. >> this kind of stuff never happened in the past. i have four children and it's terrifying. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello. i'm sara donchey. the unthinkable has happened again, another child shot on an east bay freeway. like many times before, this little boy was with his family when a bullet flew into his car and hit him. another innocent victim of a rolling gunbattle in alameda county, another family that went from a moment of peace and normalcy to panic and chaos. this little boy's mom had to rush him to the hospital in what must have been the most terrifying moment of her life. parents who are hearing about this tonight are understandably disturbed and understandably angry. here's what we know. it happened along

eastbound 580 near grand avenue at the height of the evening rush. drivers scrambled to call 911. >> there are about eight to nine shots fired. he had a burgundy or possible mercedes four door, four occupants wearing all black masks and a white small suv. both of them are shooting back and forth at each other. >> tonight eastbound 580 is closed and has been for hours. betty yu is live with us now. this case is so disturbing. what do we know about how this little boy is doing right now? >> reporter: you're right, just another senseless tragedy. we just learned from chp that this child was transferred to children's hospital in oakland in grave condition. all the while the chp is asking for the public's help in identifying this child's shooters. traffic on eastbound 580 was shut down for several hours friday night after a shooting between two

cars near harrison street just before 6:30. cones marked bullet casings scattered across the freeway lanes. the chp lieutenant was visibly moved by the violence. >> another senseless tragedy that happens on our freeways. we had two vehicles that chose to utilize our freeway systems as a rolling gunbattle when a child was struck by gunfire, where a violent crime occurs, it touches you. >> reporter: the chp described the two suspect cars as a dark gray suv and a maroon-colored suv. officers believe both exited eastbound on 580 at park street. >> it's terrible. it's like we've been dealing with shootings, robberies, car break-ins. it's endless. it's another kid. it's ridiculous. things are beyond out every

hand. >> reporter: drew van zee lives next to the freeway overpass and saw the emergency response. >> i've lived in oakland over 30 years. things are worse. things were bad in the '80s and '90s, but people didn't do the same type of behavior that they do now. so it's definitely worse now. >> reporter: more brazen? >> yeah, it's more brazen. >> reporter: friday's shooting marks the third this week involving an innocent child. on wednesday afternoon a stray bullet hit an 8-year-old boy in a passing car on mlk boulevard. later that night a 13-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet on macarthur boulevard. both victims were treated and released. what does that do to your sense of safety living here in oakland? >> i mean i feel okay because i think i've been around and i kind of know how to handle myself. i worry about my mom. she's 73, everybody else and i feel it's kind of like a batman scenario here.

>> reporter: that stretch of the freeway is expected to be tied up for this investigation into the night. >> i mean, you know, betty, this is just so horrific that we don't even have the words to describe, certainly as a parent and you expect first responders to be stoic and stone faced and you heard that man choke up. he was crying and mentioned that he's a dad, too. >> reporter: that's right. we learned after the press conference that he also has an 8-year-old. so the same age as the victim, so understandably, you know, this is extra emotional for him. >> our thoughts are with this family and our prayers are with this family tonight, certainly hoping for the best possible outcome. thank you for the update. tonight our juliette goodrich talked with an oakland mom who says seeing this kind of thing over and over again makes her question letting her teens out on the roads.

>> i've lived here for 25 years and this kind of stuff never happened in the past and i work now at a local hospital. i'm an e.r. nurse. i have four children and it's terrifying to think that you could just be driving to work or coming home and you could be killed or your child or your loved one could be. >> reporter: 580 right behind you. you travel on that every day? >> every day. >> reporter: how about your kids, your teens, they're driving? >> yeah. it's nerve wracking to think of them going out and enjoying the evenings, days at this point. >> this april a 5-year-old girl heading to a family dinner was killed in another freeway shooting this, time on 880 near milpitas. her name was eliahna. her family, friends said she loved life, loved to have fun and loved her siblings. three suspects are facing murder charges. prosecutors say they're gang members and thought they were shooting at a rival gang. you probably know jasper wu's name shot and killed in 2021 also caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout on 880 per prosecutors. he was 2 years old

when he was killed. d.a. pamela price drew a lot of criticism, protests even after she dropped charging enhancements and the two suspects won't face life in prison, but price says they will probably die behind bars. there were actually two freeway shootings today alone. chp says a woman was shot in the leg while she was in a car on 280 near alemany in san francisco. we're still waiting to hear what led up to that shooting. we are going to stay on top of this story, of course, and all of these stories. we will have the very latest for you on kpix.com, all of the most recent developments on the freeway violence and updates on highway closures. now we take a hard turn to the other story we're following tonight, the weekend heatwave heading our way. some spots will hit triple digits and coastal areas like pacifica are expecting big crowds because they are infamously cooler. >> i probably will be here. it's usually good to come out really early. people start

camping out around 9:00. >> have some patience. it's going to be crowded here. driving here, parking here, out in the water, on the beach, you know, just try to have some respect for the local people. >> yeah. a lot of our beaches are probably going to be very, very busy tomorrow, packed even because it will be significantly cooler on the coast, pacifica. you can always count on pacifica to be much cooler. yeah. that will be the case tomorrow. we're talking about a 40 to 45-degree difference between 60s along the coast and temperatures in the tri-valley and the delta over 105 degrees in spots. let's go to the big board and talk about where we topped out earlier. livermore got up to almost 100 degrees today. santa rosa made it to the 90s and san francisco just a couple degrees above normal and 60 in pacifica, almost a 40-degree spread today. i think we'll exceed that tomorrow because temperatures are going to be hot inland, but this is an inland event. temperatures will be 4 to 8 degrees above

normal for san francisco and oakland, near 70 in the city, around 80 for oakland and the east bay, low 90s in shows, a dozen degrees above normal, 105 degrees expected in concord. the tri-valley and delta will be the hot spots around the bay area. all inland parts of the bay area are under this excessive heat warning that goes into effect at 11 a.m. tomorrow, continues through 11 p.m. sunday. the hottest temperatures will be far inland around windsor and st. helena in the north bay, around morgan hill and gilroy in the santa clara valley and all those inland east bay locations. make sure you plan ahead. stay hydrated, stay cool and check on those who are more sensitive to the heat. make sure they're doing okay during the two-day heatwave, tomorrow and sunday. then we start backing down. we'll look at next week's forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you. we want to make sure you're safe. for a list of bay area cooling centers and tense to beat the heat, head to kpix.com. you can stay up to date on this heatwave on the

cbs news app. business is really booming in downtown napa these days, but a change could be coming the first time in 30 years that has merchants worried about foot traffic. >> we don't want to deter people from visiting our local businesses. >> very cold reception from a lot of the public. >> the fear a parking change could actually drive people away. lake tahoe looks kind of strange right now, to say the least, why the famously blue water is yellow. and this line in japan just keeps going and going and going. so what was everyone lining up for? the same thing that's coming to the south

tower, can you see it even just barely? it is illuminated in the fog with a new laser art installation. the coit candle is the latest from the nonprofit group illuminate. you can get a better idea from the time lapse. i know the fog is not cooperating. they started this four-part summer series last month with the pride lasers down market street. the coit candle will be lit up at sunset the next two nights had. hopefully the fog will let up over the weekend. 30 years of free parking may be coming to an end in downtown napa and business owners are worried that could slam the brakes on a recent boom. andrea nakano on why the city says the plan may be un popular, but it's necessary. >> reporter: it's been extremely busy here in downtown napa. warm weather on a friday night brought a lot of people to the area and as visitors return, parking is more of a challenge. >> it doesn't make sense for us as locals working here to have

to either pay for parking and/or to be limited to a certain parking time allotment. >> reporter: adrianna schwartz is one of the many employees that circle around town looking for parking. when they do find a spot, many are forced to set timers to make sure they move their cars every two to three hours. tony valdez, the parking programs manager in napa, says he has a solution, to charge for parking. >> we don't want to look like the bad guys just trying to penalize everybody. we want to have some kind of solution for everybody. >> reporter: let's just say when valdez proposed the idea for paid parking, he wasn't the most popular guy in town. >> very cold reception from a lot of the public. >> reporter: valdez says something has to be done to free up spots and improve parking infrastructure. charging to park would bring in desperately needed money to fix the problems. >> having an alternative revenue source that can help use that money for parking resources and then having your tax dollars being used for everything else that's important helps kind of free up

the general fund money. >> reporter: some businesses, though, in napa worry adding a fee to park would keep some potential customers from visiting the downtown area. >> i understand the concerns totally, i mean especially coming out of a pandemic, especially as interest rates keep climbing and climbing. you know, having another barrier like paid parking scares a lot of people. >> reporter: workers like schwartz say they are just starting to see business return to prepandemic levels. she doesn't have a solution for the parking woes, but she wants the city to make it as easy as possible for customers to return. >> we don't want to deter people from visiting our local businesses by saying we don't have change, cash, anything like that. >> reporter: the city council will decide how the revenue will be spent, but valdez hopes it goes towards parking issues and lots for employees. now this is just a proposal and there is no timetable for when

the fees will be implemented. if you are headed to tahoe, prepare yourself for a yellow lake and yellow everything else because pollen is drifting off the sugar pine trees and a lot of it. people are having to dust off their cars, their roofs, oh, their mailboxes. look at the umbrella with all that pollen. one environmental researcher says this is basically a perfect storm, a wet winter after years of drought. >> nature is still doing its own thing regardless of what we want. people who have lived here for decades and decades have not seen anything like it. >> oh, it's going to be miserable for people with allergies, but it is not doing any harm to the lake or the wildlife. the lake will probably clear up in a couple weeks when all that stuff sinks to the bottom. i mean it looks like a cup of noodles. >> yeah. reminds me when i lived in north carolina, those carolina pines bend over in hurricanes. it's a green haze

that covered all of raleigh. it's unbelievable. >> you're an allergy sufferer, too. >> it was not a fun time of year, no. i will not venture up towards tahoe while that stuff is in the air. >> i feel bad for people who live there. it's going to be a little cooler there, but it's going to be hot pretty much everywhere heading into the weekend. this is our heat dome that will dominate inland weather over the weekend. we don't lose that onshore influence. it's still cool along the bay and coast, i guess warm to mild around the bay. the heat dome will shift farther east. we see passing clouds sunday. our temperatures begin to back off. when the heat dome moves to the east, the flow of air around it goes clockwise and allows some moisture to sneak up towards us in the brighter colors here on futurecast. one of the ingredients we track for evaluating potential for thunderstorms with a dry lightning threat. the moisture will be here. the other ingredients for a more robust dry lightning threat don't look like they'll come together exactly right. we'll continue to keep an eye on it just in

case, doesn't look like a huge concern through sunday and monday. the heat is the big concern tomorrow, heat risk in the moderate to high category. that means the threat of overexerting yourself if you're not very careful. the heat risk begins to back off a little sunday, still moderate across the board. you need to be careful. stay hydrated. find air conditioning when you can. the heat risk really backs off monday even though temperatures are still a little above average. know the difference between heat exhaustion and heatstroke. heat exhaustion means find some shade, air conditioning, drink some water and take it easy. heatstroke is much more serious. it's a medical emergency when you need to either call 911 on your own behalf or someone else's because loss of consciousness is a symptom of heatstroke and we have to contend with deteriorating -- why can't i talk tonight? -- deteriorating air quality, moderate for much of the bay area, unhealthy for sensitive groups range inland in the east bay and into the

santa clara valley through sunday. another spare the air alert saturday and likely sunday. the fog, still the onshore influence, but it's a very compact marine layer, 50s, 60s and 70s as of 11 p.m. the fog will spread inland and back up out of the inland valleys quickly and we'll see temperatures warming up quickly from the mid- to upper 50s to low 60s in a few locations to highs that will be all over the place, 60s along the coast, 80s to around 90 down the peninsula, mostly 90s in the santa clara valley, but some of the hotter spots around morgan hill or gilroy up to above 100, widespread 100-degree temperatures in the tri-valley and delta. that's where you really need to take it easy. mild in san francisco, warm in oakland, the high near 80, mostly 90s north of the golden gate until you go much farther north, close to 110 degrees around ukiah and clearlake. everyone's temperatures back

down sunday, monday and tuesday. we settle into slightly below average temperatures by tuesday, wednesday, and thursday. again, san francisco and oakland, no worries over the weekend, just slightly above average, but alert days saturday and sunday for all inland parts of the bay area. 80s next week will feel pretty nice overall. no worries along the coast other than all the inland crowds making their way towards the coast heading into a hot weekend, not your first heatwave for the bay area. >> i'm so excited. i'm glad i live in san francisco. vacation is over. giants and a's hit the field as they begin their second halves of the baseball season. steph is currently on summer break but not from competin

sounds like giants have a new rival that don't actually play baseball. >> yeah. i would say whoever was in the stadium tonight probably sold more tickets than any giants game in history. it was a huge sellout crowd at oracle park, but not for the giants. the dead and company performed for the first time at third and king while san francisco started the second half of the season in pittsburgh where there was a floating tiki bar on the allegheny river. pirates reliever colin holderman couldn't live up to his name and hold the lead. we pick it up top of the seventh, two on for patrick bailey. he singled to right. henry davis overran the ball. both runs come home to score, puts the giants back on top and then they hand it to
