phoenix, arizona, monday tied its record for day 18 of temperatures above 110 degrees. while there's no sign of that letting up, officials say the state's power grid is holding strong. >> we have one group that looks 15 years down the road in projecting what our customers' energy needs are going to be. >> reporter: but in neighboring california, folks are being urged to keep their thermostats set at 78 degrees in an attempt to avoid a potential blackout. >> when you have really hot temperatures that don't cool down at night, that can be really taxing on the electrical equipment. that's when you start to see transformer failures. >> reporter: where the heat may not be a concern, air could be. smoke from the canadian wildfires is once again blowing across the country are prompting urgent concerns. here in new york, there's a special concern for people with underlying conditions like asthma. >> those individuals really need to stay indoors because it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. >> reporter: in the northeast,

cleanup continues from flash flooding. in pennsylvania, the desperate search goes on for a 2-year-old and her 9-month-old brother, their family car swept away. >> these people did not drive into high water. they were caught. >> reporter: their mother didn't make it. so that heat is not just hitting here. look at europe, for example. parts of italy, spain, romania are seeing triple-digit temperatures as well. the mediterranean will see temperatures rise faster than almost anywhere on else because of climate change. >> jarred hill in new york. thank you, jared. >> yeah. well, air quality alerts have been extended for millions of americans from montana to vermont. just like in recent months, it stems from smoke from the canadian wildfires. forecasts expect increased air quality concerns. it's not expected to reach the same hazardous levels as it did in early june though. and breaking news overnight on the abortion fights right in

iowa. a judge temporarily blocked the state's new ban on most abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. the ruling comes just days after governor kim reynolds signed the measure into law. abortion is back on up 20 weeks. the fbi recovered an suv in north carolina that may have belonged to the suspect in new york, this as they continue to search for clues in the home. >> reporter: police say they found over 200 guns in a vault in the basement of accused serial killer rex heuermann's long island home and are executing search warrants at multiple nearby storage facilities looking for more evidence or trophies from his alleged victims snow to think this guy was roaming around our community for so long, it's truly frightening. >> reporter: heuermann was

arrested thursday night and charged with the murders of three women, all sex workers. he's also the prime suspect in the murder of a fourth, which prosecutors feel confident they can tie him to. their bodies were found within a quarter mile of each other near gilgo beach in late 2010. >> mr. heuermann had a double life. i guess at nighttime he turned into this monster. >>reporter: police honed in on heuermann in march 2022 after discovering he owned a truck an eyewitness connected to one of the disappearances. cbs news has confirmed they discovered a car linked to one of the victims in south carolina. over time they found data from several burner phones used to contact victims, more than 200 internet searches to the gilgo investigation, and dna from a discarded pizza crust to one of the hairs on the bodies. police found the remains of 11 people on gilgo beach including a toddler.

they're looking at other unsolved crimes. >> there's still an awful lot of investigation that has to be done to fully understand how many people were victims to this individual. >> reporter: elaine quijano, cbs news, massapequa park, new york. florida governor ron desantis hit the campaign trail. he was in south carolina yesterday making his case to voters and it comes as he laid off ten staff members and burned through campaign cash faster than most of his opponents. cbs news has learned key donors are frustrated with the campaign and fear donald trump is in a far better position. >> the more i'm out there, the more support we get in these early states. >> we are totally dominating desanctus. meantime west virginia senator joe manchin is refusing to rule out a third-party campaign. he told voters last night at a new hampshire campaign, quote, if i get in the race, i'm going to win.

a pretrial hearing is set today in donald trump's classified documents case. the hearing in fort pierce, florida, marks the first courtroom argument in the case since trump was indicted a few weeks ago. the judge is expected to discuss administrative procedures. the arguments could provide insight into how the judge intends to preside over the case. trump and his aide were charged in a 38-count indictment that accused trump of mishandling classified documents at his mar-a-lago estate. he's not expected to attend the hearing. russia is vowing to get revenge after it says ukrainian forces again attacked a vital bridge connected russia to crimea. in the meantime american officials are blasting russia for pull ought of a grain deal with ukraine that could impact prices. char will d'agata reports. >> reporter: intelligence officials blaming the attack. predawn explosions took down a span of the bridge tearing down russia's main artery.

a married couple was killed and their 14-year-old daughter injured in the assault. it's the worst attack on the bridge since a suspected truck bomb blew part of it up in october. the new strike, another symbolic blow to russian prestige. while back here on the battlefields of ukraine, the fight rages on. here on the very edge of newly liberated territory, not a building has been left untouched. ukrainians have managed to push the russian front line back, but the russians keep attacking what's left of this place, and they have other ways of retaliating. hours after the bridge attack, the kremlin announced it would not be extending the u.n. brokered deal allowing ukraine to export tens of millions of dollars in grain through the black sea, not only cutting off ukraine, but impacting global grain prices, hitting developing countries most.

zurich, switzerland. no one was hurt. a freight train derailment is under investigation and there was an accident involved a carnival ride. those are the stories on the morning newsstand. the "chicago sun-times" reports a child is in critical condition after being thrown from a ride over the weekend. it happened sunday during a festival in antioch just south of chicago. the 10-year-old boy had to be airlifted to the hospital. he was on the moby dick ride which lifts people up and down. village officials shut down the festival rides right after the incident and said they were checking them for safety. the boy is expected to survive. "the washington post" says a freight train derailment in southeast pennsylvania triggered evacuations in the area. emergency crews were on the scene in white marsh township just outside philadelphia early yesterday morning after more than a dozen cars from a csx train went off the tracks. a woman who lives nearby said she had to quickly leave her home with her daughter. >> alarming. it all happened really fast. we don't have shoes on.

the s&p 500 gained 17 points. treasury secretary janet yellen is warning the u.s. could see a negative spillover from china's economic slowdown. yellen says many countries depend on china's strong growth to promote growth in their own economies, but a success is unlikely this year. yellen says the u.s. is on a good path to bring inflation down. ford is slashing prices on its f-150 lightning beast pickup truck. it's down about $10,000 while the most expensive model is down about $6,000. ford attributes the cuts to forced increased activity, increased production capacity, and improving battery raw material cost. and a price for a piece of tech history. this first generation apple iphone sold at a u.s. auction for a staggering $190,000.
