into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. we have the details of this shocking new development. unrelenting heat. potentially deadly heat is expected again today for parts of the u.s. the record-breaking temperatures rear likely to see. and tensions rising. a u.s. nuclear submarine arrives on the korean peninsula for the first time in decades as an american soldier is detained after crossing into north korea. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with major news that former president donald trump could once again be indicted on criminal charges. the president claims he received a so-called target letter saying he's the focus of a federal investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election. trump has already been indicted criminally twice, once in manhattan related to alleged hush-money payments to an adult film star, and a second time by special counsel jack smith in connection with the handling of classified documents.

jarred hill has more on this potential bombshell. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. this would be the third indictment for former president trump. right now all we know about this apparent target letter is what the former president has said on his social media and on television. and last night he let iowa voters know exactly how he feels. [ cheers ] on the campaign trail -- >> if you say something about an election, they want to put you in jail for the rest of your life. it's a disgrace. >> reporter: and at a fox news town hall -- >> election interference. >> reporter: on the defensive after revealing he received a letter indicating he's a target of a department of justice probe into january 6th and efforts to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. on his social media platform, trump called special counsel jack smith deranged and claimed he has four days to report to a grand jury. >> prosecutors don't send target letters unless they are all but certain to bring an indictment. >> reporter: trump's congressional allies rushed to his defense. >> i think the american public

is tired of this. >> i don't think there's any way in hell that trump will get a fair trial in washington, d.c. >> reporter: his 2024 gop rivals also weighed in. >> we can't keep dealing with this drama. we can't keep dealing with the negativity. >> reporter: trump's lawyers and prosecutors faced off tuesday at a florida federal court in the case regarding his alleged mishandling of classified documents. the former president's keep pressed for an indefinite delay to a trial date. the trump-appointed judge overseeing the case said she'll issue her decision in writing. now something else here, michigan's attorney general just announced 16 so-called fake electors are facing felony charges for their role in allegedly trying to overturn the 2020 election. they're accused of filing false documents claiming they were certified electors. each one could get a maximum sentence of 85 years. >> wow. that is a big teal. jarred hill in new york. thank you. there's no end in sight for this oppressive heat gripping the country, especially in arizona.

the capital of phoenix broke a record with 19 straight days of temperatures over 110 degrees. today it's expected to reach that mark for a 20th day. meteorologist ian schwartz with our phoenix affiliate kpho has a look. >> reporter: 92 degrees. that's one of our cooler readings. >> reporter: arizona woke up hot and headed straight for another record-breaker. now 19 consecutive days and counting above 110 degrees. >> read them and weep, people. more of the weeping going on for sure. >> reporter: that heat can pose serious dangers for the vulnerable like those without housing. >> some ice-cold water, a hat, sunscreen, anything like that is a lifeline for people in need. >> reporter: arizona's power grid is holding its own, but californians are urged to conserve and keep the thermostat at 78 to avoid potential blackout. >> when you've got really hot temperatures that don't cool down at night, that can be

ground and air as it burned about four acres of vegetation. residents are being urged to avoid the area. and tensions on the korean peninsula are soaring this morning. first a u.s. soldier was detained for crossing into north korea. now there have been missile launches and a nuclear sub has arrived in the region for the first time in decades. "face the nation" moderator margaret brennan has more. >> reporter: it was here where travis king, a u.s. army private second class, dashed across. a witness told cbs that king suddenly yelled out, ran in between two buildings, and then into north korea. defense secretary lloyd austin -- >> one of our service members who was on a tour willfully and without authorization crossed the military demarcation line. we believe that he is in the brk custody. >> reporter: a week prior king had been released from a detention facility in south korea. he was escorted to the airport outside seoul to fly back to fort bliss, texas.

instead of boarding the plane, he got on a tour bus to the dmz. >> the safety and security of any american overseas remains the top priority. >> reporter: securing king's release is complicated. the u.s. does not have diplomatic relations with pyongyang. the last american civilians to be detained there were freed in 2018. otto warmbrier, a college student, died shortly after his 2017 release. since king is a soldier, the defense department said it is taking the lead by communicating with military counterparts. tensions there are high. the first u.s. nuclear-capable submarine in four decades arrived in south korea. part of the biden administration's push to deter kim jong-un's continued nuclear development. and north korea fired off a suspected ballistic missile just days after testing one that could put the u.s. within striking distance of a nuclear weapon. >> that was margaret brennan reporting. on our southern border,

there are shocking reports about the alleged tactics being used to control the increase of migrants in texas. manuel bojorquez has new details that are being leaked from within. >> reporter: there was outrage when texas installed these floating barriers along parts of the rio grande to prevent crossings. critics say migrants could get stuck beneath and drown, and they say razor wire installed along the river has led to injuries, among migrants. the deterrents are part of operation lone star. >> texas has had to take unprecedented steps in responding to the crisis caused by the biden administration on the border. >> reporter: but detailed concerns about the operation's tactics are now coming from within. in an internal email dated july 3rd, a state trooper wrote, "i believe we have stepped over a line into the inhumane," listing examples, "we were given orders to push the people back into the water to go to mexico." adding, "there was the very real potential of exhausted people drowning."

he added, "due to the extreme heat, the order to not give people water needs to be immediately reversed, as well." >> my first impression was it's just barbaric. >> reporter: democratic congressman joaquin castro is urging the biden administration to intervene. >> no matter where you stand on the issue of immigration or border security, there's a difference between wanting border security and carrying out policies that could lead to people's drowning deaths. >> reporter: the texas departrtment of pupublic safete tells cbcbs news itsts office o inspector general is investigating the trooper's allegations, but stressed the department has no policy instructing troopers to withhold water from migrants or push them back into the river. >> that was manuel bojorquez reporting. relations between the u.s. and israel are under the microscope as the israeli president is set to address congress today. president herzog visited the white house and assured president biden israel remains committed to democracy despite the strains between the two nations.

the florida governor has been campaigning in south carolina this week amid struggles to fundraise and gain traction against donald trump who remain the party's frontrunner. just last week desantis laid off several employees. the "associated press" reports the murder of iconic rapper tupac shakur is back in the headlines as police carry out a new search warrant. las vegas police say they served a warrant on monday in connection with the famed rapper's unsolved murder nearly three decades ago. the search warrant was executed in the city of henderson that's just outside of las vegas. it's unclear what police were looking for or where they searched. the six-time grammy award nominee was 25 years old when he was killed in a drive-by shooting in las vegas. no arrests have ever been made. and the "albuquerque journal" has details on a deadly plane crash in new mexico. state police say the small twin-engine plane went down just after takeoff from santa fe regional airport yesterday morning. the pilot radioed the tower to

collaboration drops this friday. another major drugmaker is suing the white house over the biden administration's program allowing medicare to negotiate drug prices. shanelle kaul has that story and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: stocks kept soaring on tuesday as investors read some optimistic earnings reports from a few big banks. the dow gained 366 points. the nasdaq was up by 108, and the s&p 500 gained 32 points. johnson & johnson is suing the biden administration over a new rule that allows medicare to slash drug prices for seniors. the rule was included in last year's "inflation reduction act." the pharmaceutical industry argues the move will impact profits, causing drugmakers to delay developing new groundbreaking treatments. in-n-out employees at about 100 u.s. locations will soon be banned from wearing a mask to work. the new policy applies to workers in arizona, colorado, nevada, texas, and utah, and is
