the state set a new 24-hour rainfall record with over 11 inches, and out west the arizona heat is still breaking records with scorching temperatures rising above 110 wednesday for the 20th consecutive day. >> it sounds as though it will be several more dates to a week before we see it go below 110 degrees in phoenix. this record will be crushed, not just broken. >> the majority of our calls that we are going on are going to be medical calls. >> reporter: emergency responders carry iv fluids on ice to quickly treat patients overcome by the heat. maricopa county confirms so far at least 18 people have died from heat-related illnesses there this year. the national weather service forecasts more flooding and severe weather in the midwest and north atlantic this week, while as many as 80 million americans in the southern u.s. remain under some sort of heat warning or advisory. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you.

so we are getting new details about the possible charges former president donald trump faces after receiving a target letter from special counsel jack smith. scott macfarlane spoke with the former prosecutor about what it all means. we have prosecutors that are evil people. these are evil people. >> reporter: former president trump lashed out at special counsel jack smith and posted a video rallying supporters to join him. >> we will throw off the sick political class that hates our country -- >> reporter: with a potential criminal indictment looming, cbs news has learned the target letter smith sent to trump cites several possible charges including conspiracy to defraud the u.s., deprivation of rights under color of law which applies when someone uses power to deny constitutional rights, and witness tampering and obstruction of an official proceeding, the january 6th electoral count certification. >> it goes to the top of the most serious charges the former president will face.

democrats and republicans sparred over testimony from two irs whistleblowers who came to talk about claims the justice department interfered with the hunter biden tax investigation. >> we will continue to follow the money trail and provide the answers, transparency, and accountability that americans demand and deserve. >> there quest for something that doesn't exist has turned our committee into the fodder of absurd, an exercise in futility and embarrassment. >> reporter: the whistleblowers told the house panel there was enough evidence to bring felony tax evasion charges against the president's son but that the doj slow walked the investigation. >> at every stage decisions were made that benefited the subject of this investigation. for example, prosecutors concealed contents of hunter biden's laptop from investigators. >> reporter: the second whistleblower, joseph zeigler, who says he's a democrat, testified he felt blocked from pursuing leads during the investigation. >> it appeared to me based on what i experienced that the u.s. attorney in delaware in our investigation was constantly hamstrung, limited, and

will spend some time in belarus training its military before deploying to africa. police in alabama say they have not been able to verify the story of a woman who claimed she was abducted from the side of a highway last week. hoover police say 25-year-old carlee russell disappeared for two days after calling 911 to report a toddler wandering on the highway, triggering a massive search. when officers arrived at the location, though, they found her car, her cell phone, and a wig. police say russell told investigators that she was forced into a car and held captive but managed to escape on saturday. in the days leading up to her disappearance, police say internet searches revealed that she had looked for information on amber alerts, the kidnapping movie "taken," and one-way bus tickets. police said she stopped for snacks on the day that she went missing, but none of the food was found in her car. she has not spoken to investigators for a second time, and her family says she's traumatized and not ready to

a photo shows 23-year-old travis king taking a tour tuesday of the demilitarized zone that divides north and south korea. king had been scheduled to fly back to texas after been released from a detention facility in south korea. north korea has not commented on the incident. the justice department is investigating claims of mistreatment of migrants, and the supreme court is being asked to review a conviction in the george floyd case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports derek chauvin plans to appeal his conviction in george floyd's murder to the u.s. supreme court. the former minneapolis police officer will ask the high court to review his case after the minnesota supreme court rejected his appeal. floyd died in 2020 after chauvin pressed his a knee to his neck for 8.5 minutes. being
