the dangerous heat wave isn't expected to let up any time soon. new details investigators tell cbs news, the gilgo beach murder investigation has grown to more states where the suspect had ties. and finally three-peat. the u.s. women's national soccer team looks to make history at this year's world cup as they go for an unprecedented third win in a row. that goal starts tonight with the team's match against vietnam. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there are more than 125 million americans under heat alerts this morning. temperatures are expected to hit triple digits throughout the southwest again today as the unrelenting heat wave continues for its sixth week. today in phoenix it is expected to be the 22nd consecutive day above 110 degrees. that is a new record. meanwhile, there's a big cleanup under way after strong storms

dumped large hail in parts of michigan and colorado damaging houses and cars. astrid martinez has the latest on all of this for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. as you mentioned, the u.s. is seeing a range of extreme weather from tornadoes to heat waves, and the record-setting heat that we are experiencing across the south only intensifies and expands now through the weekend. the summer sizzle didn't stop the first day of school for some students in tempe this week. >> the heat is going to make a big impact on recess. >> my daughter was ready to get to school. so she's happy, i'm happy i guess. >> reporter: temperatures in nearby phoenix have now spent three consecutive weeks above 110 degrees. adding to the nightmarish heat, this scene of flames shooting from a propane business after multiple gas tanks exploded thursday near phoenix's sky harbor international airport. the cause of the explosion is unknown.

severe storms in the great plains and midwest dumped large hail that pelted parts of colorado and this michigan car dealership. >> every car on the lot's got some sort of damage. >> reporter: while flash flooding transformed this tennessee road into a river. in north carolina, families sift through what's left of their homes after a tornado tore through wednesday. >> it's a mess, but we're very blessed there were no injuries, no loss of life. >> reporter: new video shows the exact moment strong winds lifted the roof of a house during that storm. while those triple-digit temperatures show no signs of letting up in the southwest. this week, the national weather service does forecast that a cold front will bring temperatures that are going to be milder to the central plains and the northeast over the weekend. so some relief. >> that is some relief, but often means rain, as well, though. astrid martinez in new york. thank you. a new twist in the gilgo

beach murders on new york's long island. cbs news has learned the investigation has now spread to at least four states, including new jersey. police are trying to determine if the suspect, 59-year-old rex heuermann, is connected to any other unsolved murders. lilia luciano reports from long island. rex, did you do it? >> reporter: the investigation into the gilgo beach murders spreads nationwide. cbs news has learned police are looking into whether one or more of the three murders rex heuermann is charged with may have taken place inside the long island home he shared with his wife and children. his family was apparently away at the time of those murders. >> there is absolutely no evidence that anyone acted with the defendant, much less his family. >> reporter: law enforcement officials tell cbs news investigators are looking to see if heuermann is connected to other unsolved murders throughout the county and the country. suffolk county officials have executed several warrants including in south carolina and

las vegas where the alleged killer had ties. police in south carolina are looking into whether a 2014 missing person case could be tied to heuermann, as well. 18-year-old aaliyah bell went missing about 20 miles from where heuermann owned land. so far police have found no connection. investigators are searching the property for evidence, and it's where they found a chevy avalanche which may have been used in at least one of the three killings. >> makes you stop and think about the seriousness of what goes on in the world today. >> reporter: long island investigators are actively working with atlantic city police to determine if heuermann is involved in a string of unsolved killings of young women. >> as it stands right now, these charges are just allegations, but we look forward to proving them in court. >> that was lilia luciano reporting. authorities say an oklahoma mom killed her three children and herself after a police standoff.

police in verdigris, a tulsa suburb, say the standoff began last night and lasted for more than two hours. it's unclear what started the incident. the three children are believed to range in age from several months to 11-years-old. multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, firearms, and explosives. robert f. kennedy jr. is fighting accusations he made anti-semitic comments. the democratic presidential candidate testified at a republican-led hearing yesterday on government censorship. the 69-year-old said he was the victim of censorship on social media while objecting to charges of being anti-vax and anti-secondhand smoke. -- l -- anti-semitic. >> i have never been anti-vax. i've never told the public avoid vaccination. the only thing i've asked for, my views are constantly misrepresented. >> during a recent dinner in new

york city, kennedy was caught on video suggesting covid could have been ethnically targeted to spare jewish and chinese people. the white house said that his claims were false and vile. russian missiles hit grain terminals in ukraine's odesa region this morning. the explosion injured two people and destroyed hundreds of tons of food according to the regional government. ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy says russia has dropped almost 70 missiles and nearly 90 drones on its port cities over the past four days. the attacks come after russia pledged retaliation for a blast that destroyed the bridge linking the crimean -- linking it, rather, to the crimean peninsula. a suspected underground gas explosion in south africa left at least one person dead and dozens injured. the blast lifted cars and buses into the air. it happened wednesday night during rush hour in johannesburg's central business district. the explosion left large cracks in the road.

an investigation is under way to determine the cause and whether there's a threat of another blast. and a single ticket sold in the city of dreams, los angeles, won the more than $1 billion powerball jackpot wednesday. jamie yuccas spoke to the owner of the store where those lucky numbers were sold. >> reporter: once word got out that this downtown los angeles mini market sold the ticket, the excitement couldn't be contained. >> wow! case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the detroit free press" reports on the latest setback for the michigan school shooter ethan crumbley. the judge denied requests to ban pictures of victims' body shown during a hearing. earlier the judge denied his request to take life without parole off the table. crumbley pled guilty to the charges in the 2021 attack at oxford high school north of detroit that left four students dead. he's awaiting sentencing. new york city has agreed to pay nearly $14 million to protesters in a major class-action lawsuit. the suit was brought on behalf of about 1,300 people who were arrested or beaten by nypd during protests following the killing of george floyd in 2020. the suit claimed the rights of protesters were violated. if approved by a judge, the settlement would be among the most expensive payouts ever awarded in a lawsuit over mass arrests.
