playlist, make that happen today, a look back at the icon and his career spanning generations, not only in music but in social justice. thank you so much for joining us. we start with the heat advisory bringing some of the temperatures into the triple digits. paul is over there, i need an explanation. >> triple digits not around th bay but further inland , temperatures in san francisco and oakland are in the 60s and 70s, this is only an inland heatwave, the temperatures are up to 100 degrees and off the coast, up to over 100 degrees in concord, that used spots are the hottest this afternoon. it is plenty hot in the north bay as well. temperatures along the coast in the 50s. a 43 degrees difference as a 3:00 p.m. and a similar spread tomorrow, still around five or so degrees above average in san francisco . clos to 90 in san jose, right around 100 degrees with a high temperature in concord but

tomorrow is the last day in thi particular encounter with a hea dome that has been camping out over the desert southwest, and it is going to back off. the heat advisory goes for inland parts of the bay area through 11:00 p.m. tomorrow, make sure you are staying hydrated. we will talk about the air quality today and how long that will take to improve coming up in a few minutes. there is a practical application of this, heads up a you make your way home today, bart is running slower because certain stations are facing hea issues, expect to add about 10 minutes to your travel time. the other big story we are following today, remembering a music icon, a legend, tony bennett, his work has spanned generations and he was known as an ambassador for san francisco he died this morning at the age of 96. we look back at his life and amazing career. ♪ i left

my heart in san francisco ♪ >> reporter: tony bennett may have left his heart in san francisco but his road to fame started in new york. anthony dominique was born in queens i 1926 and he started singing as child and eventually got a job as a singing waiter. his big break came in 1949 when pearl bailey asked him to open for her, sitting in the audience wa bob hope , he was so impressed, he took the young singer under his wing. >> he said your name is too long for the marquee, let's americanize it and call you ton bennett. >> reporter: tony bennett went on to have a string of hits in the 50s and 60s. and he spen the nextxt decades peperformin sold-outut crowds. in his late years, bennett recorded duets

with popular artists like lady gaga and amy winehouse, attracting a younger generation of fans. >> that signature song, i have listened to it going over the golden gate bridge , it just gave me chills. he left his legacy right here where we live >> and he reminds us of all tha is beautiful, when we do the stories of the nastier things o the city, such an icon for san francisco, the mayor has ordered the city to fly all flags at half staff to honor tony bennett today and outside the fairmont hotel, a red reef is resting by the statue. he first performed back in 1961 i the hotel's venetian ballroom. >> he brought such significanc , and he was probably, i would say, our most exquisite ambassador for the city of san

francisco. >> the fairmont hotel is temporarily closing its tony bennett suite. in 1983, he sang i left my heart for queen elizabeth and prince philip during their visit to san francisco at the symphony hall and the former mayor, willie brown was the speaker of the california assembly and we talked to him today about tony bennett's impact to san francisco. >> he was the signature for th city, we politicians tried desperately to get that kind of acceptance but, tony bennett , whether it was a taylor swift crowd, whether it was a tupac crowd, or whether it was the tabernacle crowd, they all love tony bennett. i left my heart in san francisco. it comes to

me, to be where little cable cars climb almost to the stars. that is tony bennett. >> that is , and of course that was willie brown, one of the last time the legendary crew wa in san francisco was in 2018, when part of mason street was renamed tony bennett way. of course he performed a rendition of his signature song outside the fairmont. 2 years before that, they unveiled the statue dedicated to the singer . and o the same trip, the giants held big 90th birthday party for ton bennett, they rolled out a huge birthday cake and the crowd serenaded him. and the giants play that song after every home win. in a tweet today, they called tony bennett a true legend whose music will live on at oracle park. and we can't forget 2014, the mayor declared valentine's day tony bennett day in san francisco. >> there's so many people

talking about san francisco and this is the narrative that always brings our hearts home t the truth, we are a magic place we are going to be looking back at the legacy tony bennett gave to our city all throughout the day. you can get the latest at kpix .com . other stores we are following today, in contra costa county, antioch police and the parties suing them, the are in court after the uncovere racism and corruption within the department three months ago that included the much talked about racist and homophobic tex messages . two days ago the police chief who was not involved in this scandal announced despite what he told us earlier, he is going to retire. let's talk about what i going on in the north bay, residents warned about e. coli found in a nearby water treatment plant yesterday. napa county says they should only us boiled or bottled water until further notice, that goes for drinking and cooking water and

even brushing your teeth. e. coli can cause intestinal illness. if you have followed news o the drug crisis, you have heard about the term harm reduction. what does it mean to you? a lot of people say it means an approach aimed at reducing the impact of drug use by doing things like drug use in a safe way, meeting people where they are at in treating drug users with dignity. but there has bee a lot of debate about what is the right approach to help people struggling with the addiction. and in a lot of cases, advocates say getting people help fast ask the difference. wilson walker reports a familiar name is throwing their hat in the ring to get people recovered. >> reporter: as san francisco tries to take better control over the drug crisis, there is group jumping up and down, begging to be a greater part of the relief effort and that grou includes someone we have met before. >> this program was designed in response to the needs of the

community , and we set out to create a safe space for people who are trying to get away from all drugs. >> reporter: we introduced you to steve who after two decades in and out of jail and prison ultimately landed a job with th san francisco probation department where he ran the cities only abstinence-based recovery program. the only way to get into that program was to come out of jail which is something we don't want people to have to do, so what is steve doing now? he has a new job trying to take the same idea to more people. >> our facility is basically no being utilized to its fullest capacity. >> reporter: that is the new job, filling the empty beds of the salvation army's on-demand detox residential treatment program. >> right now in san francisco w have double down on harm reduction and while those are useful strategies, we need additional strategies like treatment on-demand and transitional housing. >> at the time, i just woke up

one day and it was kind of like a spiritual awakening, i got tired of being tired. >> reporter: joshua is among those who came here looking for help, he is now in the initial 180 day recovery program. everything here is based on abstinence. >> it doesn't work for everybody. you know, i believe what helped me, you have to wan it. and i have been through this , i have recovered before, but i was doing it for the wron reason, i was doing it for somebody else. >> as a complete treatment, the transition into the recovery focused transitional housing program for a few years where they work on formal education, vocational training, career development. >> reporter: joseph is now 11 months into recovery. >> i have a really good job , i'm a manager and i'm saving up money to finish my classes and

become a substance abuse counselor because i want to giv back to the community. service is very important to me. >> in the coming months, the plan is to take all of this and scale it up. >> the building was built in th 50s, it was a salvation army adult rehabilitation center. >> we are looking at the third floor waiting that by january will be completely remodeled. >> reporter: the old mission facility is being written renovated . >> 106 people in recovery rebuilding their lives and jus restoring hope for others. >> reporter: the salvation army is hoping to become a larger piece of the city's answer to the drug crisis, lobbying for direct referrals and more funding, while pushing back against perceptions that the institution is outdated. >> we don't discriminate, we ar open to anyone who is seeking help. >> we just want the city to recognize that the drug , the open drug scenes and the addiction with the fentanyl

crisis , there are hundreds of people on the streets that need a recovery based approach. >> i chase my recovery the sam way i used to chase drugs, all gas, no breaks. >> it's an old familiar name offering help during a new kind of drug crisis and he is convinced that for a lot of people it can be the way out. >> we need to make promises we can keep. we can help people reclaim their lives if we star promoting recovery and demonstrating the change , and it is possible. people can do better and they need to be give the opportunity. >> at the same time, san francisco lawmakers are pushing a plan to put narcan in every pharmacy in the city.

let's get to a traffic alert, this is in the north bay lanes on 580 eastbound on the richmond san rafael bridge, they are stopped, some on ramps are closed because of police activity, traffic is diverted

to san raphael. there's no estimated time of reopening but you can see, traffic is stopped so pack your patience. we know it is important. california's extreme weather and warming climate are realities and that is posing a threat to some of our most vital creatures, they are small but so important, the bees and other pollinators are crucial t our fruit and vegetable crops. lauren thoms introduces you to woman on the peninsula who is o a mission to bolster their numbers. >> reporter: jennifer is packaging wildfire flower seeds, they are the perfect appetizer for what she calls the restaurant garden for the birds, the bees and butterflies it's these easy to plant seeds that are a gateway to teaching others how they can help a rapidly diminishing population of pollinating insects. >> we have a very complicated web and we need to try to feed it so the wildflowers are just

sort of an easy entr÷e to that. it's very easy to start off wit wildflowers , but then we can move into the bigger plants, th shrubs and evergreens, the foundation plans. and we can build on that. >> reporter: what started as a pandemic project quickly turne into a mission to save the pollinators, many of which are already on the path to extinction. >> we had this a-ha moment, your garden needs to save the birds and the butterflies and the bees and all of the insects that depend on these plans. so we scrapped all of our plans an we went completely native. >> reporter: research has revealed that it is speeding up the population decline of pollinators that are responsible for pollinating about 30% of the feed we eat. and planting pollinated plants like native wildflowers with lower food sources like grass and roses could make strides i protecting the insects and therefore our food.

>> in order to have a balanced diet , and a nutritionally ric diet, we depend on many crops which provide us with fruits, vegetables, with nuts and with oils, and all those rely on animal pollination. >> reporter: one of the scientists who authored the latest research says it is not too late for us to help. >> they keep one part of the garden for growing, and that is a step forward to, let's say , the bees in the garden and increased proliferation sites. >> reporter: jennifer has distributed more than 3000 seed packets. >> it is so rewarding, because like i said, we have tried to create a restaurant for these

instance of this has been fairl brief, two or three days and tomorrow is the last day with this particular encounter. we are back to 90 degrees in concord on sunday which is very close to normal for this time o year and then we just hover nea average all the way through the last day of july which is a wee from monday. another day of moderate heat risk on saturday which means that anyone with heat related sensitivities whether it is for health reason or lack of access to air conditioning may have some difficulties during the hottest part of the afternoon in the inland parts of the bay area. on saturday, still a few patche but is almost entirely gone fro the bay area by the time monday rolls around. the air quality i not great today but not terribl either, a couple of the yellow dots trending closer to orange, in the east bay and santa clara valley. mostly moderate air quality with good air quality along the coast. it is a combination of smoke and the ground level ozone and tomorrow, expect it to be not

great again, it is worse for th sensitive groups. limit the amount of driving around you ar doing for the first half of the weekend, you can see the hazy horizon from the salesforce tower. the temperatures are all over the place. 102 in livermore, you are the hotspot. if you are heading out to the a's game this evening, as they take on the houston astros, mid-70s in oakland for the firs pitch, but then dropping down t the 70s. the temperatures are going to be quite a bit warmer further inland , the fog will hold off until after midnight, it'll be locally dense around the bay and especially along th coast but it should dissipate quickly in the valleys and backing up to the coast toward late morning and early afternoon. temperatures tonight dropping down to the mid to upper 50s, but those will be the warmest locations on the ma to begin the day on saturday.

80s along the peninsula and in the santa clara valley. furthe in the valley, temperatures wil climb into the 90s. low 100s fo the tri-valley and the delta . just about 70 in san francisco, just below 80 in oakland with low to mid 90s for the north ba until you go much further north again, one more day with the nice temperatures around the bay, then it's back to a cool weather pattern, a mix of 60s and 70s, one more day of heat inland , a lot of spots in the 90s then we are back down to th 80s for most of next week. and along the coast, no sky july beginning sunday and beginning into next week. taylor swift fans are buzzing over a couple of rules for next week's conc
