who left his heart in san francisco. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area we'll talk about the passing of tony bennett in a minute, but first, the evening commute has been terrible. traffic on the bridge has been stopped for hours, in fact the bridge is closed as we speak. this is a bird's eye view from earlier today shot from our helicopter. chp says a man is having a mental health emergency, and to give you an idea of how long it's been going on, chp first started getting calls about this at 11:45 this morn. we've been checking with them often and they say they don't know when the bridge will be open again. waiting is all anybody has been doing. a lot of people have been trapped in their cars for hours. this tweet was from when

closer to when this started. lou tweeted he was stuck on the bridge and people are playing frisbee is someone is playing guitar. and this had a major ripple effect on traffic across the bay area, including here in the city. our reporter anne makovec spotted this. imagine how frustrating it was for people stuck all day and into the evening. a couple of hours ago, sport fan tweeted we're sleeping here tonight. did i check with him and he was fortunately able to escape the grid lock this evening. chp has been diverting traffic at main street and san rafael. we'll let you know if the bridge reopens. tonight we're also remembering the life and legacy of tony bennett, a man who captured the heart of san francisco. he died today at 96 years old after a battle with alzheimer's disease. he

performed for 70 years, and his voice 6 unforgettable. our juliette goodrich shows us he's a man embedded in the fabric of san francisco history. ♪ i left my heart. ♪ >> reporter: tony bennett was known around the world as mr. san francisco, but he was actually born in queens, new york. he began singing at an early age and got his big break with legendary singer pearl bailey asked him to open for her. in the audience, comedian bop hope. >> he said what's your real name? i told him and he said that's too long for the marquee. he said let's americanize it and call you tony bennett. >> reporter: he became a major teen idol with a string of hits in the 50s and 60s that. said, he's best known for his signature song about the little cable cars first performed by bennett in 1961 right here in the bay area. >> i may very well have been

one of his first renditions in the venetian room so many years ago. >> reporter: in 1983, bennett performed it in front of queen elizabeth and prince phillip. >> thank you for coming tonight. >> reporter: four years later, a special appearance for kpix. this time on chrissy field with former anchor kate kelly. >> i'm looking forward to singing with the san francisco symphony. i call that slumming. >> and here comes tony bennett. >> reporter: the occasion, the 50th anniversary of the golden gate bridge. bennett did not disappoint. ♪ on a hill, it calls s to meme. ♪ >> reporter: later in his career, bennett clicked with the young hip crowd and

collaborated with megastars like lady gaga. >> tony bennett, whether it was a taylor swift crowd, whether it was a tupac crowd, or whether it was the mormon tabernacle choir crowd, they all loved tony bennett. ♪ golden sun will shine for me. ♪ >> reporter: in his lifetime, tony bennett sold more than 50 million records worldwide. >> one of the last times tony bennett was in san francisco was in 2018 when part of mason street was renamed tony bennett way. tonight andrea nakano visited his favorite san francisco restaurant where he left a lifetime of memories. >> reporter: north beach was a place tony bennett would come when he was in town, specifically here in piazza pellegrini. one of his friends used to own it, and even when

there was a change in ownership, he'd come to enjoy his favorite dish. ♪ i left my heart. ♪ >> reporter: dario took over the restaurant in 2005, and since then, he's had the pleasure of serving the legendary singer. >> i remember one time, you know, it's like a saturday night, and we had almost a full house on the books. he calls at like 5:00 and goes we're coming there with 20 people at 7:00. i'm like okay! you know, couldn't say no to tony. >> reporter: he says tony bennett loved his pasta and red wine. here at the restaurant. >> these are some other homemade, hand made raviolis we make here. you know, meat, lobster, squash, spinnish and ricotta. >> reporter: bennett would frequently order one of the

house specialties. >> you know, his favorite dish was obviously this ravioli here. it's filled with meat and meat sauce. this was his favorite that he would order every time. >> reporter: he called bennett a true artist. he was more than a gifted musician. >> he would just sit here with me and gine and his wife at the table, and his favorite thing was to, you know, he would usually ask for a, a pen and a piece of paper, and he would start drawing. >> reporter: he recalls seeing bennett perform in person and listening to that voice that could stand alone singing i left my heart in san francisco. >> he loved san francisco. he loved it. >> reporter: while bennett was a music superstar, here at the

restaurant he was just one of the guys. >> you know, he was a very comfortable guy to be around. he was really, really down to earth. >> reporter: now he treasures the memories he was able to create with bennett. >> these are some of the staff that we used to have here. his beautiful wife, him. all of our staff here. >> reporter: and this signed final record album is one of his prized possessions. the world may not see another singer with the kind of charisma and talent of tony bennett ever again. >> i'm sorry that he's no longer with us, but we definitely lost the last of the good guys. he was the very last one. >> tony bennett first performed a left my heart in san francisco at the fairmont hotel in 1961. fans gathered outside

a man was shot and killed in san francisco's tenderloin in broad daylight at golden gate avenue and hyde street. tonight a driver actually caught the moment of the shooting on his dash cam while waiting at the intersection. just a warning, you can hear

gunshots in the clip. police say witnesses saw the suspect get away. officers have not announced any arrests tonight or released the victim's name. the racist text message scandal that rocked the antioch police department was front and center in a contra costa county courtroom this morning where a group of officers is supposed to testify in front of a judge. da lin was there, and has more on why we still haven't heard from the police officers, and why the outgoing chief of police won't have to testify after all. >> reporter: a packed courtroom. many people turned away because there weren't enough seats. no cameras allowed. everyone wanted to hear from the officers who are accused of being racist. >> no justice, no peace! >> reporter: while it was loud outside the courthouse, the only sound inside came from a judge and attorneys. a few attorneys spent much of the day fighting for their clients and why they shouldn't have to testify in the hearing. out of

the nine antioch officers subpoenas, the judge only granted the request from the police chief not to testify. the judge says that's because chief ford took over the department one year after the text scandal had happened. chief ford also announced his resignation this week. >> i want justice to be served. >> reporter: what's justice to you? >> them to go to jail. justice. >> reporter: this is one of the people that packed the courtroom. her son, trent allen, was the subject in some of the alleged police text messages. investigators say officers joked about kicking her son's head. investigators say some officers also used the n-word and compared black people to gorillas and monkeys. >> he said he kicked his head like a field goal, and he meant that. he was a professional soccer player in college. he meant that. said his foot hurt. that's how hard he kicked my son in the head. >> reporter: her son and three

others are facing murder and attempted murder charges in a drive-by shooting case from 2021. legal experts say if the officers involved in the case are found to be racist and acted with racial bias in the case, the murder charges will likely be dropped. >> they already targeted him, so i don't know what they could have did. they already falsified police reports and everything else. yes, his case should be dismissed. >> reporter: we only heard from an expert witness late in the afternoon. the hearing will continue next month on august 25th. that's when we expect to hear from officers involved in the scandal. again, the antioch police chief will no longer have to testify. in the middle of peak tourist season in wine country, people that live and work there are warned to only use bottled water or tap water boiled because the napa valley water treatment plant found e coli in the water samples. that can

cause serious intestinal illness. we don't know how the contamination happened. >> i used what i had at home pre-filtered, and now i'm coming to pick up with the town is offering. you can come back and refill bottles as well. >> bottled and purified water will be on hand saturday at the napa county library inside the community center. a wildfire that burned 41 acres in the pass forced cal trans to close part of eastbound 580 this evening. traffic was backed up for two miles and made it even worse for all the drivers caught up in the spill over from the bridge closure. firefighters eventually gogot it under control and the lanes are back open. and the bridge is still closed at this hour and traffic is still backed up in multiple direction. plus, i-80 is closed over the strait, so that will be happening all weekend, actually. there's a pavement repair there. it's just a mess. this is 12 hours that the

bridge is closed. what happens if there's an actual huge event -- >> we talked about earthquakes and threats to the bridge. it calls into question, you know, whether we're prepared for something like that, and i hope that we are. >> hopefully that kind of stuff is evaluated in the wake of this. let's talk weather. into the weekend, it's still going to be hot inland. here's what you need to know heading into another hot weekend inland, but still cool around the bay and along the coast. the cool down starts inland starting sunday, and we're back to average temperatures through next week. but for tomorrow, it's another alert day due to the hot temperatures inland, and poor air quality as well. we're just getting the edge of the influence of the heat dome. phoenix has been over 110 degrees every day for 22

outside at san jose. the temperature there stands in the mid-60s. very nice. 57 in san francisco. you're down into the low to mid-70s inland in the east bay after temperatures in concord and livermore did top out over 100 degrees this afternoon. we start off tomorrow morning mostly mid to upper 50s to some spots in the lower half of the 60s where temperatures were a little hotter today. it is going to be hot inland tomorrow, but still cool along the coast. 60s, 70, 80s, and 90s in the forecast. mid-60s on the coast, 80s on the peninsula. 80s and 90s in the santa clara valley. 90s and 100s for the inland east bay. the tri-valley and delta the hot spots on the map. 70s for oakland. low to mid-90s for the north bay until you go much farther north. but everybody is back to near average temperatures heading through next week. that means a mix of 60s and 70s in san francisco and oakland. even below average
