ahead of what could be one of the biggest strikes the country has seen in decades. >> if they don't pay up, we'll shut them down. >> even, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakanoment relief is finally here as the latest heat advisory expired at the top of the hour. >> before that, there were temperatures over 100 with hazy skies and poor air quality. people found relief anyway they could. >> it's a similar scene across the area. back here in bay area, fire crews responded to several fires along 580 on the altamont pass which they think were started by someone intentionally. >> da lin reports from livermore the hot weather may have helped the flames spread

more quickly. >> reporter: as you know, hot weather increases fire danger. but one person deliberately set fires along i-80. charred hillsides along westbound i-80 on the altamont pass. six fires saturday morning. they received more than 40 911 calls from drivers saying a man appear today be setting fires on the shoulder of the freeway. witnesses say the man was in a blue shirt, black pants with a newer model white chevrolet pickup truck. the fires burned about 50 acres. the chp tells me one firefighter was injured and listed in stable condition. >> plenty of drivers out there. you know what i mean? so it will be dangerous. >> reporter: the arsons are unsettling for san jose residents sylvia sanes. she was trying to stay cool with her nephew at shadow cliffs in pleasanton. >> oh the weather is hot out there. he was crying auntie,

let's go to the lake. i was like let's go to pleasant lake. >> reporter: they weren't alone. many families cooling down in the lake. >> it was hot. my mom said let's come outside to get wet. >> reporter: this young lady is still recovering from the sunburn caused by the previous heat wave. >> it hurt my skin. it hurts my skin because like it burns. >> reporter: sylvia and the folks here hope people will chill out. do their part to prevent fires instead of causing fires. >> we come out here on a hot day and have fun. >> reporter: no one has been arrested. there are no freeway cameras on the altamont pass. they are looking for dash cam videos an witnesses who can identify the arsonist. >> the heat also impacted bart service in the east bay for the second day in a row. trains had to run slower in certain sections because the tracks were just too hot. today, it was between orinda and pittsburgh bay point and

between castro valley and dublin pleasanton. now that the worst of the heat is behind us, let's check in with darren peck. >> we are taking a big step down sunday. 10 degrees cooler. it will still be hot. to put that in perspective look at where we should have been. if you want to know the average, the warmest locations in the trivalley, 88 is the average this time of the year. if we switch from what the average is to today's high, it was 105. san jose, 81 would have been your average. it was 91 there. and hayward was about 11 degrees above average. when i say we are coming down about 10 degrees that means we are bringing the numbers back down to average but that can still be hot. we will look at the exact forecast coming up in a bit. the other item to discuss with you is the air quality. san jose, we are tracking the air quality down here. we had

another air quality advisory today. we don't have one tomorrow. the situation will improve. oakland, you are also still registering at moderate. it the is same pattern responsible for getting rid of the smoke and cooling off the temperatures. we'll have the forecast in a few minutes. more than 300,000ups workers are ready to strike if they don't get a new contract. union supporters were out in san francisco to raise awareness for the looming strike. and john ramos was there. >> reporter: a looming strike against ups but its drivers brought out a group of supporters for a rally before heading into downtown posting

support posters in sympathetic businesses. the deadline is august 1st. after that, if there is no agreement, the teamsters say they will bring a halt to delivery of nearly one quarter of the nation's commercial goods. >> we built a strike. we have been practicing pickets all over the country. our members are engaged and willing to fight for what we are asking for. so as we go back to negotiations in the last week, if they don't pay up, we are going to shut them down. >> reporter: and the company may be feeling the pressure as well. in a statement they said quote with the contract expiration less than two weeks away, we need to work quickly to finalize a fair deal that provides certainty for our customers, our employees, and businesses across the country. the democratic socialists of america who sponsored the rally said they are strong supporters of workers rights and feel the

size and leverage of the drivers group could provide the biggest work stoppage in the country since 1959. >> we see the teamsters strike as a pivotal strike in this moment. if it happens it would be in 340,000 workers on strike. the largest private sector contract in america right now. so basically, this fight will have shock waves for the whole community. >> reporter: east bay economist tj agrees. he says the entire bay area economy could be impacted. >> we have a major port. it may not be that you have ups workers at the port of oakland for instance. but it is really hard to measure how many different components of the overall transportation sector are in some way affected by ups. how do you get the goods from the port of oakland to the

warehouse in tracy. very hard to measure and could be significant. probably bigger than other places in the u.s. >> right now, the biggest issue is a pay increase for part time drivers. the teamsters are demanding a living wage. the company says it has nothing more to give. but if agreement isn't reached, the public will begin feeling pull time pain as a result. >> one think tank estimates if the strike happens it could cost the economy $7 billion. for just a ten-day work stoppage. it has been a summer of discontent with writers and actor's guilds already on the picket line. thousands of starbucks workers across the country trying to organize their own unions. all of the strikes have the same basic message. the economy has changed. nay say if company profits are up, they deserve their cut. >> workers at the brewery want to buy the san francisco beer

company to keep it from closing after they announce plans to file for bankruptcy last week. anchor brewing says thaw received an email from the union saying employees have already met to discuss the potential sale. a spokesperson released a statement saying quote given our deep respect for the anchor union and our team members, should our employees put forward a bona fide legally binding offer to buy the company, one that includes a verifyable source of funds, we will gladly consider it. community members are coming together to help an ice cream vendor who was robbed at gunpoint. hundreds gathered at the fruitvale shopping center to help him. after the video spread on social media of the robbery, people couldn't be happier to come out and support

him. >> it was really hurtful. i did cry. that could have been my grandfather. that could have been my dad. >> we are bringing the community together. >> and they certainly came through buying everything diaz had to offer. meanwhile, police are still searching for the suspects in the robbery? other news, the boil water oil has been lifted. the boil water order was issued after bacteria was found at the water treatment plant. but again, in yountville, the water is safe to drink again. down in temecula, the school ordinance adopted a curriculum including gay rights after initially rejecting it. there was a mention of harvey milk in the book and governor newsom said the state would be buying the textbooks and sending the district for the bill if they didn't include them in the book. they would

pleasanton as well. >> we can't come up with anything weather related. >> it is not windy. >> let's talk about the heat. thankfully it will not be as hot tomorrow in the trivalley or anywhere as it was today. most of us are getting a ten degree break tomorrow and that is huge. that means we don't have any excessive heat watches for tomorrow anymore. still hot. let's take a look. these are numbers that would apply to livermore. we are still going to daytime high that will be well into the 90s but the day i think should get spotlighted is this one. because by the time we get to wednesday, now, not only are you back in the 80s , but you are technically now below average. and most of the seven-day forecast for most

of our micro climates from wednesday on are all going to do just that. you'll get down to your respective average or below. still have issues with air quality out there. i showed you what the reading was for oakland and san jose. that was using the more calibrated air now sensors that the epa uses but you have also probably heard of purple air. there are so many low cost sensors. you can plot them on a map like this and come away with the visual and say i see now. you see some orange there in contra costa county. that is because we had a few grass fires. if

you are localized it doesn't take much to edge a lot of the low cost sensors up. the epa sensors are the best. but those low cost sensors, everybody is using them anyway and they can be helpful to get right down to your neighborhood. the smoke is going the other way tomorrow. everything starts blowing that way. that will help in a big way. if you look at the futures for tomorrow, it looks surprising but there could be a few drops of rain through the central valley. a weak area of low pressure in the state. but you will notice the clouds tomorrow. a few high clouds through the middle of the day. the real story is this image. the daytime highs. it is still hot tomorrow when you cool down 10 degrees where where you were today. but you are not 105 anymore. you are going back down to the low to mid 90s . that big bubble of heat will migrate off of us. and we will

a celebration in chinatown for the kickoff of the second annual lion dance festival. hundreds of spectators watched grouped show off their best dance skills. more than 10 teams across california and other states are taking part in the two day festival. it continues tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. also, continuing tomorrow is oracle park's pickle ball tournament. the series started thursday. the stadium's first ever pickle ball tournament. the pros showcase exhibit starts at 11:00 in the morning.
