how people are dealing with the deadly heat. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. july is on track to become the hottest month on record on planet earth. more than 3,500 temperature records have been set this month alone in the u.s. the extreme heat has now tragically caused deaths in several states including arizona, ohio, florida, and pennsylvania. amid an unrelentnting heat w wa two womemen hiking a at a nevad state papark were fofound dead r other hikers reported them missing saturday. nevada state police have not released details on how they died as temperatures there, like much of the southwest, hit triple-digit highs over the weekend. further south in texas, a father smashed through a windshield to pull out his baby boy who was accidentally locked in the family's hot car. in arizona, a school librarian's shoes melted on the scorching street as he stood outside to help children through the crosswalk. >> this part of the shoe right

firefighters there are battling an explosive wildfire that has trapped tourists and residents on the vacation island of rhodes. those trying to escape have described the scene as chaotic after the government transported nearly 19,000 people out of the area over the weekend. the blaze has been going for the past week prompting the country's largest evacuation in history. cbs' haley ott has the latest. >> reporter: a dream vacation turned nightmare. holiday makers on a greek island fleeing flames on rescue boats. >> we brought in the lucky ones. we got on the authority boat. this is what we're leaving behind. >> reporter: rhodes, a popular destination for europe's beach-goers, is on fire. >> please, please! this way! >> reporter: extreme heat and dry, windy weather fueling wildfires with tourists forced out of their hotels and residents their homes. greek firefighters say it's one of the most difficult situations

led by prime minister benjamin netanyahu. he left the hospital today after receiving a pacemaker yesterday to be at today's vote. this comes as president biden told axios that, quote, it looks like the current judicial reform proposal is becoming more divisive, not less, adding it doesn't make sense for israeli leaders to rush this. russian state media is reporting the country intercepted and destroyed two ukrainian-launched drones that attacked moscow today. the defense ministry called the event a terrorist attack. there were no casualties in the incident, but two nonresidential buildings were struck. in ukraine, citizens are cleaning up after a russian air attack on the port city of odesa yesterday. a roof of a cathedral in the historic center city collapsed during the raid. missiles killed one person and injured nearly 20 others including several children. in afghanistan, at least 31 hve died in heavy flooding. heavy monsoon rains have flooded hundreds of square miles closing

down roads and causing landslides. officials say 41 people are missing, and more than 70 were injured. hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed. search and rescue teams have been looking through the rubble of the collapsed homes hoping to find the missing. ohio police are conducting an internal investigation following a violent traffic stop involving a k9 unit. body camera foot animal shows an officer releasing a dog onto a suspect who appeared to be surrendering to police after a high-speed chase. astrid martinez has the story, and we should warn you some of the video is disturbing. do not release the dog with his hands up -- >> reporter: newly released video shows the moments before an ohio police k-9 attacked an unarmed black man as he was trying to surrender following a lengthy highway chase. >> get the dog off of him! get the dog! >> reporter: the video starts as police try to pull over jadarrius rose for a missing mud flap.

the 23-year-old led police on a chase for more than 30 minutes stopping in jackson county, 90 minutes south of columbus. at one point police are guns drawn instruct him to exit the vehicle. he takes off again and police had to use spike strips to start -- to stop the semi. >> do not release the dog with the hands up her. >> reporter: patrol said troopers were attempting to make the rita when circleville police officer ryan speakman deployed his k9, biting rose. >> the justification for the use of the k-9 needs to be removed. >> reporter: brian higgins is an assistant professor at the john jay school of criminal justice. what would indicate to that officer that he should have not released that dog? >> when we see a supervisor in state police ordering that officer not to release the dog, that's the order that should have carried the day. >> reporter: circleville police would not say if officers speakman is under investigation.

people have died and another 19 are missing after a ferry capsized overnight. officials say the wooden boat was designed to carry 20 passengers, but it was overloaded with some 40 people. so far only six people were known to have survived. fishing boats and divers were deployed to search for additional survivors. a small plane crashed into a house in texas, and a jury deadlocked in a rapper's murder trial. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" is reporting that the double-murder trial of rapper ynw melly has ended in a mistrial after the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict. prosecutors had been seeking the death penalty. the 24-year-old musician, whose legal name is jamell demons, is accused of fatally shooting two friends in 2018. the rapper had a breakout hit that year and went on to work with kanye west just before his arrest. prosecutors are expected to retry the case with a new jury.
