underground resistance against robo taxis. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. th video is wild. there is no doub about that. but as crazy as it is to see a car flying off in a embankment and crashing into a street below, the story behind what might have led up to this is even scarier. tonight, witnesses tell us they saw thre people stumble out of the car right after it crashed. one of them was in a ski mask. this happened at the sanchez street stairs in the castro neighborhood. betty yu spoke to neighbors about what they saw and heard in the moments before and after the crash, including man who tried to help. >> reporter: right before the viral car crash off the sanchez stairs, a resident who lives nearby told me off camera that he heard a commotion and a man

trying to get anyone's attentio to help stop his carjackers. th car that flew through a barrier in dramatic fashion in dolores heights saturday was stolen according to san francisco police. witness david lee snapped this photo of the three suspects inside. one in a ski mask, another bloodied and carrying a skateboard. two others fled away from the scene up the stairs. this trio was caught walking away from the crime scene. >> i first wanted to come down and see if i could help anybody but people had already started to come out of the car and saying things like, um, we got to get out of here. they'll be here soon. we have three minutes. >> reporter: moments before it flipped and landed on its hood at 19th and sanchez, a man told sfpd he was carjacked a few block away on church street.

>> he kind of fought them, and in the end, like they hit him, like in the head i think with a gun. that's what he said. he said, like, when they were fighting, his shirt got torn. >> reporter: imagine if that hi somebody. >> it's really heavily. i haven't moved it. it's hefty. >> reporter: a piece of the railing landed inside the entrance to david's home. luckily no passer by was injured. san francisco police have not found the suspects. neighbors said an officer recovered a gun at the scene. bottles of alcohol were also spotted inside the car. >> it's terrible. we've lived here 30 years, and this is the worst thing i've seen. we've seen a lot of things happen here, but this is by far the worst. >> so far police haven't made any arrests. head to our websit for more video of the arrest an the latest updates on the investigation should anything change. at the same time, carjackings are on the rise across the bay in oakland. according to oakland police data, there have been 369

carjacking in the city just thi year. this time two years ago there were 298. that's a 24% increase in just two years. >> this is not going to get better on its own. this is not problem that will solve itself. this is an absolute epidemic. >> i grew up in oakland. i've been here my whole life, and it was not ever like this before. >> a lot of good people in oakland. a lot of good things happen in oakland, and it's a really wonderful place to live except for the crime. a lot of stores in san francisco, you walk in and you can't just grab the thing you need to buy. even coffee beans are locked up at some stores. this is, of course, supposed to stop shoplifting, but even stores on lockdown are still getting hit. we want to a walgreens in the city to report on all this, and it was hit three times while our crew was

inside. >> reporter: richie walked into a san francisco walgreens when he saw this in the frozen food section. >> chains, heavy chains that went from padlock to padlock on both sides of the doors. and this was bizarre, something i'd never seen before. this is just more icing on the cake telling us that rampant crime has becom a regular part of life. >> reporter: so typical that in the 30 minutes we were at this walgreens, we watched three people, including this man, steal. >> did that guy pay? did that guy pay? >> no. >> reporter: walgreens says thi richmond store with items like mustard locked up has the highest theft rate of all their nearly 9,000 u.s. stores hit more than a dozen times a day.

when thieves turned to cleaning out ice cream, workers put up the chains. they were ordered down by corporate because of th negative messaging. but walgreens isn't the only retailer impacted in san francisco. >> you have to ask an employee for help. >> reporter: at this store, frozen food is controlled with cable lock. lotion and nail polish behind glass. and anothe grocery store, $14 bags of coffee under lock and key. >> what is this? >> um, i don't know. i don't understand why coffee -- >> oh, here she is. >> yeah, it's become kind of like a police state in san francisco. i don't know how els to describe it. >> reporter: it's not part of city life or the way people should be living. >> right. and that includes folks committing the crimes.

>> reporter: this small busines advocate says these problems in the city are leading to renewed activism by the residents. >> i think what we've seen, especially in the last couple o years, is less tolerance, more exasperation to change how the city is run. it's not enough right now, but there's a change and i think we'll get there. >> reporter: matt dorsey sees this as a systemic problem from city leaders to an understaffed police force to the fentanyl crisis. >> when you see that level of retail theft, it tends to be subsistence level retail theft. >> reporter: people who are hungry. >> people who are hungry. there's a level of addiction in the city that's happening at levels we haven't really seen i san francisco. what i'm hearing

from my residents and the peopl of san francisco is it's time for tough love. we're not doing any addict in the city favors b enabling behavior that's potentially deadly in ways we'v never seen. new tonight, a wildfire tha broke out in solano county this evening burned a house and a couple of buildings to the ground. this happened in vacaville. a car sparked a fire in a field. this one moved hous and caught the house on fire. people had to rush to evacuate, and this video from a helicopte gives an idea of how tough this fire must have been to fight. it's out tonight, but we don't know if anyone was hurt. some say that driverless cars are the future, and san francisco has been at the forefront of what could one day be a whole new autonomous world but not everyone likes that. a lot of people are fed up with robo taxis for a lot of reasons but not everyone is taking it a

far as this group of protesters they're here to talk about this and i guess you should call thi an unorthodox mode of protest. >> yes, think man versus machine. and how do you stop robo taxis in their tracks? wit something you find on a lot of city streets. >> reporter: they come out afte dark, riding their bikes in packs and wearing masks to conceal their identities. >> we just kind of ride around in our main travel routes and wait for them. >> reporter: called safe street rebel, they've been roaming the streets of san francisco huntin for a specific kind of car. rob taxis. their goal is to disable them using orange cones as thei weapon of choice. >> we see a lot of problems wit these. >> reporter: john, who asked us not to use his real name, is th group's unofficial spokesperson >> we're in a climate emergency and transportation is the numbe one source of emissions.

>> reporter: for the last two weeks, this band of anti-car activists has become a thorn in the side of big tech companies. once the cars are disabled, they're stuck until a technicia arrives to reset them. what are you hoping to achieve? >> we're hoping to really chang the conversation on these. we want more people to just consider whether we want these on our roads and really rewant regulators to listen. >> reporter: they believe these cars are not only unsafe, but are taking away much needed resources from more efficient public transportation. >> here's why san francisco is protesting the expansion of rob taxis. >> reporter: their protest that has gone viral with millions of views online. in a statement, weymo called the actions

vandalism. cruise says they provide rides to late night workers. safe street rebel says they only disable empty cars to ensure no one is harmed or inconvenience. cruise says it hasn't impacted them that much. how many do you reckon you've stopped? personally i've done i the high dozens. i invite peopl to look at cruise's statements where they say we're disrupting understood delivery and it's no impacting their fleet. it's one or the other and they can't bot be true. >> reporter: do you think they're bluffing? >> yes. >> reporter: billy riggs is a professor of transportation at the university of san francisco and advisor to tech start ups. he says not only are these cars fully electric, therefore bette for the environment, but also safer. they've had zero fatalities. >> we've reached a level where a.i. can actually do many of th

functions in our lives better than we can with less margin fo error. >> reporter: even so, city officials have raised concerns on whether the cars are ready for prime time. both companies made headlines after getting stuck in the middle of busy intersections. in some cases, they block first responders fro their doing jobs. the san francisco fire department says it logged more than 60 incident involving these cars since may of 2022. safe street rebel says the presidents more accountability. >> i think broadly the people o san francisco are just tired of being tech's guinea pigs. >> reporter: promoting public transport by targeting autos on autopilot. >> you know, itay, when i watched this piece, great work by the way. but the first thing i think about, the first question i have, is this agains the law or breaking a rule?

they have the worst of it. tomorrow 117 in phoenix. up to 110 in las vegas. 115 in palm springs. but the heat dome is relaxing on the bay area. inlan specifically. we had hot temperatures friday and saturday. back to near average today. mid-90s around concord, that's only six degrees above average. then we settle into a long stretch through the end of july into the first few days of august of near or slightly belo average temperatures for those inland parts of the bay area. not bad at all for late july. watching the air quality. smoke continuing to drift towards us from the flat fire burning in southwest oregon. doesn't look like we'll see a lot of smoke certainly not tomorrow. the latest forecast model data indicates any smoke that makes its way into the bay area wednesday will be if diffuse, s

air quality will be moderate at worst on wednesday. some longer range data indicates dispersed particles into the upper levels of the atmosphere by friday. no big concerns there. not seeing fog just yet, but it will sprea across the bay area later tonight. temperatures in the 50 and 60s across the board. comfortable this evening. temperatures drop into the 50s across the board. some of the warmest spots around 60 by earl tomorrow morning. temperatures inland will heat up. talking about a mix of 80s and 90s for inland parts of the bay area, but even the hottest spots into the delta staying short of 100 degrees, and that's fine in lat july. temperatures around the bay a couple degrees above normal. mid-70s oakland with lo 60s along the coast. we settle into a stretch of slightly belo normal temperatures wednesday, thursday, and friday. mid-60s i the city are highs near 70 for oakland and the the east bay. 9
