traffic nightmare across the bay.. why giants fans were cheering for the a's even as they played against them. >> our battery effectively lasts forever. and could a battery one day last forever? the effort in the bay area to make that al reality. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. baseball fans are notoriously loyal. it's not often you see die hard fans that grew up watching the team they love suddenly cheering on the other side. bay area baseball fans take their loyalty to a whole other level. [ cheering ] >> tonight we saw two different fan bases united behind one cause, to keep the a's in oakland. the a's are petitioning the league to let them relocate are plans to build a ball park on the las vegas strip. league owners

still need to vote to approve it that, and while all signs point to the bright vegas lights, life long a's fans are trying everything they can to stop it. that includes soliciting the help of giants fans. betty yu was at the game with the protest in the park. >> reporter: it was an unusual move seeing two fan bases unite in a show of solidarity. the a's took the loss on tuesday, but the energy inside oracle park was high. [ chanting ] >> reporter: the battle of the bay became unite the bay tuesday night. fans from both teams chanted sell the team, a plea to keep the a's in oakland. >> i'm here to represent my team to show my love and respect for the team. >> reporter: fans showed their
11:03 pm
love for the team literally from head to toe. thousands of fans wore shirts that read sell across the front. fan groups, the oakland 68s and the last dive bar, gave away the black and white shirts ahead of tuesday's game. last month, fans put on the classic green shirts for the reverse boycott at the coliseum. >> you'll never see it between oakland and san francisco ever. >> reporter: mark stauffer has been a fan since the team moved to oakland. >> they've already made legislative moves in nevada. >> reporter: why bother at this point? >> they have to tear down a huge building. they have to get the owners to actually agree to sell, which is 75%, and i think after things like this, that might not happen. >> reporter: the giants manager said he supported unite the bay. what do you make of the unity we're seeing amongst the fans in the name of keeping the team here in the bay area? >> i get it. i mean, i'm all

for, i don't know if i would call it a peaceful protest, but maybe it is peaceful protest. today's game is really all about, at least from our side, is focusing on winning today's game. but totally understand the sentiment. >> reporter: for his part, fisher has not indicated that he'd sell the time. >> it's all the emotions. it's denial, hurt, pain, and anger. >> it's not over until it's over. >> reporter: so the reverse boycott last month drew about 28,000 fans. tonight's crowd estimated to be 40,000. now to another big story. traffic came to a halt on the bay bridge during the evening commute after chp says a naked woman ran into traffic and fired a gun. it was all caught on camera. this video was shared around 4:45 this evening. a woman ran across the eastbound lanes near the toll
11:05 pm
plaza and seemed to be shooting a weapon. >> this [ bleep] is shooting. she's naked in the street and left her car right here. >> chp says the woman stopped her car on the bridge, got out, and was holding a knife and started yelling at other drivers. she got back into the car, but officers say she stopped again, got out neighborhood, and this time was carrying a gun. she started firing shots at other cars and up into the air. she was arrested and left the bridge in an ambulance. at one point, all eastbound lanes were shut down so officers could look for shell casings, and the back up made traffic in the city and the east bay horrendous. now, this is the second time we have seen the entire stretch of one bay area bridge shut down in just a week. you'll probably remember the lower deck of the richmond san rafael bridge was shut down for 19 hours until saturday morning because a man
11:06 pm
was having a mental health crisis. the back up caused a traffic nightmare across the bay. the eastbound lanes were reopened once the man was rescued from a rope. we know not everybody has been happy about twitter rebranding to x, but we caught a few people actually protesting it at twitter today. a protest of three when our cameras were there earlier. these guys staged what they called a mock funeral for twitter, complete with a casket and rainbow outfits. >> it's a beautiful, iconic, global image, and it's time to save the bird and get rid of elon musk. good bye elon musk! >> elon musk announced the new logo and branding for twitter, but a lot of twitter branding is still on the website, including prompts to tweet. first responders across the bay area seem to be having a rough go from the east bay to the north bay. local police and fire departments are making headlines tonight, and not necessarily for the right reasons. tonight, the vallejo

city council talking about declaring a state of emergency because its police department is so understaffed. their meeting is going light tonight, and they're talking about it as we speak. >> this proclamation is, is going to allow certain things to happen a little bit quicker. it's not going to by pass certain obligations we have with meet and confer, but there are also other avenues of staffing that have been used. >> there are 51 openings in vallejo pd. they're trying to recruit, but the department says it takes a long time to hire. business owners in vallejo say they're taking safety into their own hands and say police need to step up and do more. >> i've never seen a cop come through the door talking to the business owners to get bigger ties with the community and see what's going on, really being engaged. i've never seen that. >> the solano county sheriffs office could take over if the

city can't get more officers. and the richmond fire department dealing with internal struggles tonight. they're trying to get rid of their own chief. the union just made a vote of no confidence in monoya accusing him of desertion and dereliction of critical duties. they say his refusal to address present safety issues, unwillingness to meet and confer, and excessive absence from the city make him incapable of running a safe and functional fire department. we reached out to the chief this afternoon. we are still waiting to hear back. and the livermore police chief is speaking out tonight about the alameda county district attorney. he's so frustrated with her, he took the rare step of writing a letter to pamela price. the chief's frustrations center around one case. he is asking

for tougher criminal charges for this man. he is an accused, a convicted felon, rather, accused of robbing two women at gun point while he was already wearing an ankle monitor. katie nielsen sat down with the chief today. >> the facts in this case are just very troubling. >> reporter: police chief jeremy young has been with livermore pd since 2014 and was promoted to chief in 2020. for the first time in his law enforcement career, he says he was forced to publicly disagree with the district attorney's office. >> i didn't feel like i was, um, speaking out against her. i just felt like it was a communication to her in an effort to get her to consider the charges, um, that i thought were relevant. >> reporter: this stems from two incidents that happened on sunday may 21st at a shopping center in livermore around 5:00 p.m. police say this man, 21-year-old colby barry from fremont violently attacked one
11:10 pm
woman to steal her purse, and when unsuccessful attacked another woman. they learned he was already convicted of multiple felonies, was on parole, and wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the robberies. they asked for sentencing enhancements to additional jail time for barry if convicted. >> i thought the enhancements would be filed because they apply, and it seems like they're meant for a circumstance just like this. >> reporter: but the chief says the district attorney pamela price did not file the enhanced charges against barry, prompting him to write a letter on july 6th asking price to reconsider, saying the sentencing enhancements are quote, necessary tools to safeguard the public against an individual who poses a clear danger to their safety. the district attorney's office would not respond to multiple requests for comments on the case, but in an interview with our betty yu a week ago, price said she does not believe in automatically adding sentencing

enhancements, and instead prefers diversion programs. >> any time that we can divert someone from the criminal justice system, that is a goal because the criminal justice system has been shown to be racially biased. >> barry's next court hearing is august 11th. now we turn to a story that shocked the sports world today. lebron james' son bronny, a rising college basketball star and nba hopeful suffered a cardiac arrest during practice at usc today. he's walked in his dad's footsteps. his dad says he wants to play in the league with his son before he retires. we have more from la on the scare for the family. >> reporter: bronny james' family spokesperson says the 18-year-old suffered cardiac arrest when he collapsed in basketball practice monday.

it's not the same thing as a heart attack. >> it's not a coronary event. they're just, for whatever reason the heart goes into abnormal rhythm, and they lose consciousness and sometimes has to be done right away. >> reporter: this doctor from the jersey shore medical center at neptune says quick action by the staff using an aed is likely why the 18-year-old is out in fact icu and in stable condition today. >> he was supervised with the experts. they probably shocked him within one minute, brought him back, and he looks like he's going to be fine. at least that's the initial impressions. >> reporter: well wishes for the incoming freshman are pouring in from across the sports world. buffalo bills safety damar hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest during a game, tweeted prayers and support for the james family. magic johnson also turned to social media to wish james a speedy recovery.

>> i think everyone is just happy that he got to the hospital and everyone's thoughts are with him and the james family to make sure he's okay. >> reporter: bronny james was one of the country's top high school players and declared his preference to play for usc in james. his father, lebron james, has said he hopes to one day play in the league with his son. >> cardiologists say it could be months before determining what happened to bronny, what caused him to go into cardiac arrest. tonight the family is asking for privacy. you see a lot of interesting things riding the subway in new york city. take it from me, been there many times. at today was no different, except today it was mother nature putting on a show. water was absolutely gushing into this train in brooklyn. the car flooded, and in true new york city fashion, people seemed to be

looking at the region-wide temperature forecast tomorrow as we switch over to the weather graphics, and it's still cooking for much of california away from the coast. yet another day of 110 degrees if phoenix. every single day in july so far has seen a high temperature in phoenix over 110 degrees. not a streak they'll snap any time soon. the bay area will be cooling back to normal thanks to the stronger on shore breeze kicking in over the next several days. not looking like we'll see a return to above average temperatures, at least significantly above average temperatures probably in the next ten days or so. the climate outlook from the prediction center shows the best chance of above normal temperatures to the east. a little sliver of light blue just starting to show up, and it expands a bit as we expand the time frame. 8 to 14 day outlook through the first week in august shows a decent chance of below average temperatures along the coast and including most of the bay area. then late july for inland parts of the bay area, below average are two

very nice words to hear. air quality across the bay area today in the good category. we might see a slight step back in the air quality tomorrow as a batch of smoke from the flat fire that's still burning in southwest oregon comes down. it's still producing smoke, just some drifting our way tomorrow. maybe a little haze and air quality in the moderate category at worst. it's certainly possible to see mostly green lots on the map again. looking outside, just a dark perspective, but you can see the bridge for the moment. 73 in concord where you climbed into the mid-90s earlier today. that's not the case tomorrow. the fog will redevelop and push pretty far across the bay as the marine layer deepens over the next few hours. that means we'll see more of that fog every day through the rest of

weekend. not bad though for july. temperatures in san jose hovering around 80, and even the hot spots inland and the east bay only hitting the upper 80s. staying below 90 in the hottest locations, we can definitely handled that for awhile. temperatures on the coast staying around 60 as we head through not just the weekend, but all the way into early next week. plenty of gray skies overhead. no sky july right into fogust. >> nice. next time someone describes what i do as below average, i'll remind them that's a good thing. paul, thank you so much, appreciate it. okay, think about how many things we use that are powered by batteries. our cars, phones. but batteries like the ever popular lithium ion ones are expensive and don't last long. but what if there was a way to make a battery last forever or close to it? a bay area start

>> our battery, unlike everything else, effectively lasts forever. >> reporter: these batteries use nickel hydrogen. the technology has been around for nearly 50 years, primarily in the space industry, storing solar energy to power everything from satellites to the hubble telescope, and the international space station. but using it on a large scale project back on earth posed a costly problem. a critical component is made of platinum. >> crazy expensive. >> reporter: a few years ago, the founder took a fresh look at the technology and discovered a clever way to make them cheaper. >> that took this crazy good performing energy storage technology and made it affordable. >> reporter: and while nickel is mined, it's abundantly found on earth. the batteries contain such a tiny amount of hydrogen. >> it's very light and fast before anything damaging can happen. >> reporter: even when thrown on a fire.
11:21 pm
>> that pressure actually forces the hydrogen to recombine with water inside the battery. the battery continues the heat and reaches a predefined temperature. at which point there's a seal that gives way, and the battery vents steam at that point. >> reporter: the company says there's no need for extra err conditioning or a fire suppression system. >> you need venting. that's it. that means if something were to happen, the gas could escape on its own and exit the structure. >> reporter: as to what's meant by lasting forever. >> it has a cycle life of 30,000 cycles. that would mean charging the battery three times a day for 30 years. in practical terms, that's a forever battery. >> reporter: the batteries stationary and can be mounted in racks, stacked, or stored in containers. they can be used on the grid, in a business, or one day even in your home as seen on this prototype. >> our battery can be placed underneath the floor in the

gearing up for some kind of ninners qb battle, while word isn't official just yet, the team developed positive news about brock purdy. he's cleared to practice ahead of the first day of camp on wednesday. he underwent surgery in march for a torn ligament in his elbow suffered in the nfc championship game. hard to forget. his recovery is ahead of schedule. >> i get videos sent to me all the time like i'm 40 days away, i'm allowed to watch from my window. he looks like brock. i always thought we'd take a few weeks, and just to hear how he felt mentally and see physically, he's ready to go. we're pumped. >> one player that won't be at tomorrow's practice is defensive end nick bossa. the reigning defensive player of the year is sitting out until a new contract is signed. the
