in russia is recovering after fighting on ukraine's front lines. how his efforts could impact other prisoners in russia. plea deal hearing. hunter biden expected in federal court today to plead guilty to several tax fraud charges. plus, a last-ditch effort from a republican leader to block the deal. and lebron james' son hospitalized. bronny james suffers cardiac arrest while practicing with his university basketball team. we have the latest on his condition. well, good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. a former u.s. marine once imprisoned by the russian government was injured while fighting with ukraine against his former captors. you may remember trevor reed who was detained in russia in 2019 until the biden administration brokered a prisoner swap for his return in april of last year. now the state department says reed was recently injured while fighting in ukraine.

jarred hill has the latest on his condition. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. so trevor reed is expected to recover. he was evacuated from ukraine by a nongovernmental organization, and now the state department is saying that reed did not tell them he was going over to ukraine to fight, and there are questions about whether this news will make it harder to bring other americans being held hostage in russia home. multiple sources tell cbs news u.s. marine veteran trevor reed is expected to recover two weeks after suffering a concussion and lacerations while fighting for ukraine in the eastern part of the country. >> we are aware that with support of the ngo trevor has been evacuated to germany where he is receiving medical care. >> reporter: reed spent three years in a russian jail after a 2019 arrest for assault on police officers. he returned to the u.s. last year in a prisoner swap for a convicted russian drug smuggler. the biden administration made clear reed was not in ukraine on behalf of the u.s. government

and repeated this warning -- >> traveling to ukraine, choosing to participate in the fighting there, has very real risk of capture, of death, of bodily harm. >> reporter: some u.s. officials worry reed's actions could complicate efforts to bring home two other americans still being held in russia. former u.s. marine paul whelan and "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich. >> the team is certainly continues to pursue every avenue to bring home evan, to bring home paul. >> reporter: reed is being treated at a military hospital in germany, and it's unclear when he'll return home. two sources tell cbs news he's scheduled to start classes at georgetown university next month. a spokesman for reed's family said they have politely declined to comment on the situation. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you so much. president biden's son hunter is set to appear in federal court in delaware today for a hearing on his proposed plea deal, but house republicans are

trying to block that deal. under the proposed agreement, hunter biden would avoid prison by pleading guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges. he would also avoid prosecution on a separate gun charge. the chairman of the house ways and means committee, republicans jason smith, filed a brief urging the judge to throw out the deal. he claims hunter biden received preferential treatment from the justice department. and a federal judge blocked the biden administration's new rule restricting asylum seekers at the u.s.-mexico border. the rule, in effect for two months now, allows migration officials to -- rather immigration officials to deny asylum to migrants who arrive at the border without applying on line. they can be denied for not seeking protection in a country they passed through. the new regulation contributed to a drop in border crossings. the judge delayed the ruling from taking effect for two weeks to give the biden administration time to appeal.

and it comes a day after the justice department sued texas over the state's refusal to remove buoys meant to prevent migrants from crossing the rio grande. two-thirds of americans will experience temperatures above 90 today as excessive heat warnings continue over arizona, nevada, and southern california. cristian benevides reports from miami which is under a heat advisory. >> reporter: the heat wave sending temperatures soaring above 100 across much of the south is affecting humans and animals alike. >> we've lost upwards of ten birds already just in our laying flock, and then we actually had to start prematurely processing some of our meat birds just due to the amount of heat that they're being exposed to. >> reporter: from taking cold showers to seeking refuge in cooling centers, tens of millions of americans are finding ways to cope with july's scorching temperatures.

in phoenix, the mercury has hit at least 110 degrees every day this month. the city is on pace for its first month where the average temperature was at least 100 degrees. >> this is the longest heat wave and most intense that phoenix has ever experienced since these records have been kept. so this is not normal. this is abnormal. >> reporter: maricopa county which includes phoenix has confirmed 18 heat-related deaths this year and is investigating 69 others. a new study from an international group of scientists finds the extreme heat now blanketing the u.s. and southern europe would be virtually impossible without climate change. cristian benevides, cbs news, miami. overseas, both pilots were killed when a greek air force fire-fighting plane crashed after dumping water on a wildfire. it happened yesterday on the island of evia off southern greece. video showed the low flying plane disappearing into a canyon before a fireball was seen.

a third successive heat wave and strong winds have fueled the evacuation of thousands. wildfires have also killed more than 30 people across the mediterranean. british billionaire and the owner of the tottenham team has been indicted on insider trading charges. u.s. prosecutors say joe lewis passed confidential stock tips to his romantic partners, employees, private pilots, and friends. they say the transactions made millions of dollars. >> joe lewis is a wealthy man, but as we allege, he used inside information as a way to compensate his employees or to shower gifts on his friends and lovers. >> in one instance, lewis allegedly loaned his two private pilots $500,000 each to buy a biotech company's stock before the results of a clinical trial were made public. an attorney for lewis says that the u.s. government made an egregious error in judgment charging lewis.

the son of nba superstar lebron james had a scary incident on the court. 18-year-old bronny james suffered a cardiac arrest during a workout at the usc basketball teammonday. the freshman is now recovering after he was rushed to the hospital. jonathan vigliotti has the latest on that. >> reporter: concerns over whether bronny james, one of the most recognizable basketball recruits ever, will still be able to play after being rushed to the hospital and admitted to the icu. a family spokesperson saying bronny is now out of intensive care and in stable condition. >> the son of lebron james, bronny james, made it official on saturday committing to usc -- >> reporter: bronny, the elder son of lebron james, the nba's all-time leading scorer, was a top recruit of sierra canyon high school in los angeles. in may he announced his decision to play for usc and was at a practice when he went into cardiac arrest. a sudden cardiac arrest occurs when an electrical malfunction

authorities say no drugs were found in the vehicle, though, and they do not suspect foul play. "the baltimore sun" says the wife of a missing sailor is holding out hope after the mexican navy spotted what could be his capsized racing boat. donald lawson departed alone from acapulco on july 5th heading to the panama canal en route to baltimore. days later he messaged his wife that he was having equipment trouble and lost engine power. yesterday officials said a search plane spotted a boat hundreds of miles off the mexican coast, but rescue crews have been unable to reach it because of bad weather. and "politico" says the federal trade commission is getting ready to file an antitrust lawsuit that could break up amazon. four people with knowledge of the matter told "politico" the lawsuit challenging a host of amazon business practices could be filed next month. now the complaint is likely to involve amazon's rules that the ftc says blocks lower prices on

the trooper was responding to a crash on the bridge when a suspected drunk driver hit his car on saturday. trooper kevin bagley went over the railing and fell 30 feet onto a river bank. he suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. florida governor ron desantis was not hurt after being involved in a four-car crash in tennessee yesterday morning. the republican presidential candidate and his staff were on their way to a fundraiser in chattanooga when it happened. police say the four-car motorcade was traveling behind a patrol car when it suddenly stopped causing the cars behind to pile into one another. president biden approved a new national monument honoring murdered black teenager emmett till and his mother. mr. biden signed a proclamation yesterday on what would have been till's 82nd birthday. till was 14 when he was abducted and tortured and killed in mississippi in 1955. his murder and his mother's
