were lined up at the outside of levee stadium. first, thank you for joining us and starting off in oakland where public safety is, of course, top of your mind after a series of violent crimes. we know you want answers. anne makovec joins me. >> there will be a community safety meeting scheduled for 6:00 tonight at the montclair presbyterian church. the district attorney, pamela price will be there. she will face a lot of questions after a violent few days in oakland. somebody was found shot to death on 7th and international boulevard. last night a woman nine months pregnant was shot in the chest near international boulevard and 77th avenue. she and her unborn baby are in stable condition. carjackings are on top of mind. a woman was driving alone when the car in front of her blocked the lane and out they come with guns. now, she

managed to escape luckily. she drove around them. just minutes ago opd announced three arrests in connection to a recent attempted carjacking on skyline boulevard. we are working to confirm if this is the case that they are referring to. in another case, undercover officers spotted an organized group of carjackers holding up a driver at gunpoint yesterday. they say the carjackers crushed an opd cruiser in the rush to get away. police say they arrested three people. officers have reported a 24% jump in carjackings from this year compared to last year. the police union said they are arresting the same people over and over. we asked the mayor how do you hold repeat offenders accountable. >> we returned motorcycle units to the street to address this type of crime. not just that but as you saw it was an undercover unit out there. burglary suppression team out

there. as residents and businesses, please be vigilant and aware of your surroundings. >> she is supported of automated license plate readers and is working on that with council members. we should note oakland police investigated 57 homicides this year compared to 66 last year. we will keep an eye on the public safety meeting. >> that meeting is sure to be a firestorm. thank you so much. san jose police are investigating a trend in business burglaries and it's leading to a lot of damage. watch this? >> not just a one off, folks. police say in at least 20 burglaries, suspects used a stolen kia or hyundai to do this. the backing up then hitting the gas. they crash right into the business. what happened there, they go in and clean the store out of merchandise and drive off. the

car that they used to break in. more than 10 of these happened at smoke shops from march through april. they say jose covos is suspected in eight of the burglaries. they got him last month but several more matching the same pattern happened since then. >> the reason it's happening, there is a bunch of viral videos on social media from different platforms where thieves are showing other people how to steal the vehicles. there is flaws that i think a lot of these manufacturers are trying to identify going forward. there is a very, very simple way to steal the vehicles and a lot of these thieves are using things that are inside your vehicle. suspects are breaking the window using specifically chargers that are left in the vehicle to start the vehicle. >> police arrested several juvenile suspects for a similar burglary this week. other storiewe an update on rolling gun battle that tied up traffic on highway 24 up in the east bay yesterday near

lafayette. we know an innocent bystander and his child were caught in the chaos. the driver told chp two cars came up from behind him speeding then he heard gunshots. he said one of those cars hit his car then took off. keep in mind, a child is in the car with him. the driver pulled over in a whole foods parking lot. the man and his child were not hurt. since both suspect vehicles took off, it's not clear if anybody in those cars got hurt. hayward's computer network is online following a cyber security attack 2 1/2 weeks ago. the system involving the 911 center and dispatch is up and running, back online. dispatchers in that period had to use pens and paper and radio communications to do their job. you can do business through most of the city's online portals. however, and this is something they are working on, water bill payments and library services, those are not up and running. we will let you know when we hear they are.

in santa clara, the first taylor swift concert in the bay area is tomorrow. we saw huge crowds at levi stadium. swifties are willing to wait for hours for merchandise ahead of the show. >> there are hundreds if not thousands waiting to get their hands on taylor swift swag. one lady left her home at 10:45 p.m. >> i did not want to miss out on what i wanted. this is worth it. i'm here. i made it. yeah. >> tell me what you want? can you tell me. >> i want it all but mostly the black -- all black hoodie. >> reporter: this is all taylor swift's doing, making sure her fans can get t-shirts and swiftie swag if they couldn't get inside the concert. get ready, she will be here

so, if you are walking down a trail or outside your house there is nothing more disturbing than this sound. yeah. that's the sound of a rattlesnake. it will get your attention. we understand that rattle snakes have bitten two people in the bay area so far this summer. a 13-year-old was bitten last week and in june a 7-year-old boy in mount diablo state park. as temperatures rise, so does the demand for state removal companies with the big sticks and clamps at

the end. he showed ryan yamamoto how his work protects people, pets and the snakes themselves. >> reporter: it is one of the last things you will want to see or here when poking around your home. but for james mccloskey, it's exactly what he is looking and listening for. do you get used to the rattle? >> no, it's alarming. >> reporter: james is a professional rattlesnake catcher that gets busy during the hot summer months inspecting people's property. >> rock walls are notorious for small juvenile rattle snakes and large ones. these create a safe place for them. >> reporter: from rocks and tree stumps, brush and old lumber, he knows where the

snakes like to hide. >> what are you looking for? >> down plywood like this one here, a good hiding spot for the snakes. you can see mice were underneath here. >> reporter: if they are not in your yard, they are likely hiding near your home. >> normally they will be running along, like a lot of times by the front doors. along the house, they like the cool cement. >> reporter: with the help of this dead rattlesnake -- >> this one fell victim to, i'm guessing, a hawk, owl, something. it does have a couple of laceration marks here. >> reporter: he showed us what to look for if you think you have a rattlesnake near your home. >> first of all, you will hear the rattles. they will surprise you. it will be coiled up in

the striking position. this head diamonds out. when they are agitated, it gets bigger. >> reporter: he started his company two years ago after leaving his job in probation to pursue a passion as a young boy and teenager where he used to catch snakes on the family farm. today that kit in him using the snake selfie stick to share his weekly catches on social media. >> it's fun. you get up close and personal to the snake and their reaction when you catch them. >> reporter: you don't kill them? >> no, i don't kill them. snow, they are a good species. they keep out the rodents. they don't belong people's homes, pets and children. >> reporter: finding and catching what you don't want to see or hear, making sure both human and reptile can coexist.

>> so, think of him as a snake eviction agent. he told us that he likes to relocate the rattle snakes to remote areas. time for a look at the forecast. >> hold on. >> that's vague. where exactly does he relocate them. >> everybody planning to go hiking -- >> i walk the coordinates where the snakes are now breading. let's take a look at what is happening weather-wise. watch your footing when you head out. good weather the next several days. again, watch where you are stepping. on shore breeze helping the free air-conditioning continue. the heat dom edges a little closer into the weekend. temperatures, it's a baby warm up around the bay and farther inland. no extreme heat in store. increase in temperatures. low 90s by sunday, four above average, we

can handle that. then we drop down with several days of below average. those are days nine and 10 of the forecast. that's a long way down the line. in the short term, good air quality across the bay area today. good air quality through the weekend and early next week. the flat fire in oregon is producing some smoke but not as much as late last week. some of it drifting toward us should not impact the air quality. blue skies looking to the east from the mark hopkins hotel. it has been a cool day in the city. in the mid-60s in oakland. mid-70s san jose. inland temperatures are in the mid-80s. that's warm but below normal. close to normal or slightly in negative territory. fog will develop across the bay and inland valleys tomorrow morning. it will be back to the bay mid-morning and to the

coast toward lunchtime but on the coast, you are not going to see much sunshine at all the next several days. temperatures will reflect that around 60 degrees. temperatures tonight in the 50s. low 50s in the north bay valleys. mid- to upper-50s to around 60. high temperatures tomorrow will be near or slightly below normal. 60s, 70s and 80s. very few locations reaching the 90s. 70s down the peninsula and south end of the bay. close to 80 in san jose. farther into the 80s inland in the santa clara valley. upper 80s for the delta. there, staying just below 90. mid-60s in san francisco. right around 70 for oakland with a lot of low 0s in the north bay. that is pleasant for late july. 90 for st. helena. if you are heading out to stern grove, temperatures will be in the low 60s which is what you expect for the last

weekend in july. the seven-day forecast, warmest says, saturday, sunday and monday then back to below average temperatures, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. cooler than normal start to the month of august. inland it will be on the warm end in the mid-80s in the east bay. >> okay. thank you so much. we are counting down to 49ers preseason on cbs news bay area. as matt lively is about to show you, all eyes were on the quarterbacks at their first practice. >> reporter: we are that much closer to watching scott hanson on red zone during the fall as teams reported for camp including the 49ers. they are looking forward to putting on the pads and going full speed. trey lance took most of the

homelessness is a challenge in a lot of bay area cities, not only those that walk around but live it. homeless advocates are taking the city to court accusing the city of shuffling unhoused people around instead of getting them help and off

the streets. >> reporter: i'm in the tenderloin where a coalition filed a lawsuit against the city basically asking them to stop enforcing sweeps all over the city. they say they need to stop right now, not only displacing them but destroying their belongings. >> how are you guys doing? all right. >> reporter: a recurring situation for many in san francisco. >> i put a lot of money into it i saved up. it will last me a while. >> reporter: he lost all of his stuff three times within 16 months since moving here from pennsylvania. he wasn't robbed. he says the police confiscated and destroyed everything. >> i had brand-new clothes in there, dress clothes, nice shoes, nice suitcase. now everything else i had in there is gone. >> reporter: he is one of many

that says the coalition on homelessness, an organization that filed a lawsuit against the city last fall regarding these practices. >> the city confiscates homeless people's property, they lose paperwork, sets them back in terms of the search for housing, lose touch with the social worker. >> reporter: the executive director of this organization says even though the court issued an injunction in december of 2022 forcing the city to stop enforcement on the streets temporarily, the situation has gotten worse. they filed a brief claiming that the city violated that court injection. >> in the past seven months, have documented that san francisco continues to do its sweeps in terms of, again, threatening enforcement or enforcing their laws against being in public and having belongings in public. we are talking about folks that don't have an alternative.

>> reporter: but we were told via e-mail that the city is compliant with the injunction and has gone to great lengths to ensure a services first approach to addressing homelessness. in a statement, we submitted an extraordinary amount of evidence that shows plaintiff's allegations fall apart under closer examination. they equate service requests from the public with enforcement actions of the even joined laws which does not make sense. while this battle is ongoing, rick says he will do his part. >> trying to get a job but when i think i can get a job, nobody wants to hire me. i put in for social security. i haven't heard back from them yet. >> reporter: he has no plans to return to pennsylvania. he hopes they would give him a chance to stay out here until he gets into permanent housing. >> report ring live from the stealth where there is being
